Overweging
Wie God liefheeft maar zijn medemens minacht of veracht, kan niet op een vruchtbare manier liturgie vieren. Sterker nog: voor Jezus heeft waarachtige broederlijkheid jegens de naaste voorrang op het liturgisch leven. Bovendien gaat deze liefde die Jezus van ons vraagt wel erg ver: te midden van een wereld die vaak geregeerd wordt door een harde logica van oordeel, straf en vergelding, pleit Jezus voor verzoening met onze ergste tegenstanders. Sluiten recht en verzoening elkaar echter uit? Hoe moeilijk heb ik het met Jezus’ oproep?
EERSTE LEZING 1 Kon. 18, 41-46
Elia bad opnieuw, en de hemel gaf regen
Uit het eerste Boek der Koningen
In die dagen zei de profeet Elia tot koning Achab :
“Ga nu eten en drinken,
want ik hoor reeds het kletteren van de stortregen.”
Terwijl Achab vertrok om te eten en te drinken,
klom Elia naar de top van de Karmel,
boog zich ter aarde en stak zijn hoofd tussen zijn knieën.
Daarop zei hij tot zijn knecht :
“Ga nog wat hoger en kijk in de richting van de zee.”
De knecht ging naar boven, keek en zei:
“Ik zie niets”
Daarop zei Elia :
“Ga nog eens en nog eens, tot zevenmaal toe.”
En bij de zevende maal zei de knecht :
“Ja, ik zie een kleine wolk uit de zee opstijgen,
zo groot als de palm van een hand.”
Toen zei Elia :
“Ga Achab zeggen dat hij inspant en wegrijdt,
anders zal de stortregen het hem nog onmogelijk maken.”
En geleidelijk aan werd de lucht zwart,
de wind stak op en er viel een zware stortregen.
Achab steeg in zijn wagen en reed naar Jizreël.
De hand van de Heer kwam op Elia ;
deze trok zijn gordel strak om zijn lenden
en snelde voor Achab uit tot aan Jizreël.
TUSSENZANG Ps 65(64) 10, 11, 12-13
Voor U moet men zingen, God, op de Sion.
Gij hebt ons land verzorgd en besproeid,
het rijk en vruchtbaar gemaakt.
Het hemelwater stroomt neer op de akkers :
zo maakt Gij ze klaar voor de oogst.
Gij drenkt de voren en effent de kluiten,
Gij weekt ze met regen en zegent het zaad.
Zo is heel het jaar omkranst van uw gaven,
op al uw wegen ligt vruchtbaarheid.
Op eenzame steppen glinstert de dauw,
een gordel van heerlijkheid ligt om de heuvels.

In die tijd zei Jezus tot zijn leerlingen :
“Ik zeg u : Als uw gerechtigheid
die van de Schriftgeleerden en Farizeeën niet ver overtreft,
zult gij zeker niet binnengaan in het Rijk der hemelen.
“Gij hebt gehoord dat tot onze voorouders is gezegd :
Gij zult niet doden.
“Wie doodt zal strafbaar zijn voor het gerecht.
“Maar Ik zeg u :
Al wie vertoornd is op zijn broeder,
zal strafbaar zijn voor het gerecht.
“En wie tot zijn broeder zegt : raka,
zal strafbaar zijn voor het Sanhedrin ;
en wie zegt : dwaas,
zal strafbaar zijn met het vuur van de hel.
“Als gij uw gaven komt brengen naar het altaar
en daar schiet u te binnen dat uw broeder iets tegen u heeft,
laat dan uw gaven voor het altaar achter,
ga u eerst met uw broeder verzoenen
en kom dan terug om uw gaven aan te bieden.
“Haast u het eens te worden met uw tegenpartij
zolang ge nog met hem onderweg zijt ;
anders zou uw tegenpartij
u wel eens aan de rechter kunnen overleveren,
en de rechter u aan de gerechtsdienaar,
en dan zoudt gij in de gevangenis worden geworpen.
“Voorwaar, Ik zeg u :
Ge zult daar niet uitkomen
voordat ge tot de laatste penning hebt betaald.”

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijke huis.
77. “Het woord van de Heer heeft de hemel gemaakt” (Ps. 33, 6) . Zo worden wij erop gewezen dat de wereld voortkomt uit een besluit, niet uit chaos of toevalligheid en dit geeft haar nog meer luister. Er is een vrije keuze die tot uitdrukking komt in het scheppende woord. Het heelal is niet ontstaan als het resultaat van een willekeurige almacht, van krachtsvertoon of verlangen naar zelfbevestiging. De schepping behoort tot de orde van de liefde. Gods liefde is de fundamentele reden van heel de schepping: “Want alles wat bestaat hebt Gij lief en Gij verafschuwt niets van wat Gij gemaakt hebt; ja, als Gij iets gehaat hadt, zoudt Gij het niet geschapen hebben” (Wijsh. 11, 24) . Zo is ieder schepsel onderwerp van de tederheid van de Vader, die het een plaats in de wereld toewijst. Zelfs het vluchtige leven van het meest onbelangrijke wezen is onderwerp van zijn liefde en in die weinige seconden van zijn bestaan omgeeft Hij het met zijn genegenheid. De heilige Basilius de Grote zei dat de Schepper ook “goedheid zonder berekening” is en Dante Alighieri sprak van de “liefde die de zon en de andere sterren beweegt”. Daarom stijgt men van de geschapen werken op “tot zijn liefdevolle barmhartigheid”.

Consideration
He who loves God but despises or disdains his fellow man, cannot celebrate liturgy in a fruitful way. Indeed, for Jesus, true brotherhood towards one’s neighbour takes precedence over the liturgical life. Moreover, this love that Jesus asks of us goes very far: in the midst of a world often governed by a harsh logic of judgement, punishment and retribution, Jesus pleads for reconciliation with our worst opponents. But do justice and reconciliation exclude each other? How hard is Jesus’ call?
FIRST READING 1 Kings 18, 41-46
Elijah prayed again, and the heavens gave rain
From the First Book of Kings
In those days the prophet Elijah said to King Ahab :
“Now go and eat and drink,
For I already hear the pounding of the torrential rain.”
As Ahab left to eat and drink,
Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel,
He bowed down and put his head between his knees.
Then he said to his servant :
“Go a little higher still and look in the direction of the sea.”
The servant went up, looked and said:
“I see nothing.”
Thereupon Elijah said :
“Go again and again, up to seven times.”
And at the seventh time the servant said :
“Yes, I see a small cloud rising out of the sea,
as big as the palm of a hand.”
Then Elijah said :
“Go and tell Ahab to strain and ride away,
or else the torrential rain will make it impossible for him.”
And gradually the sky turned black,
And gradually the sky turned black, the wind came up, and there was a heavy downpour.
Ahab got into his chariot and drove to Jezreel.
The hand of the Lord came upon Elijah;
He drew his girdle tight around his loins and

“I say to you : If your righteousness

“Whoever kills will be punished in court.
“But I say unto you :
Whoever is angry with his brother,
shall be punishable in the court of law.
“And he who says to his brother, raka,

“When you come to bring your gifts to the altar

On the Care of the Common Home.
77. “The word of the Lord has made the heavens” (Ps. 33:6) . Thus we are reminded that the world comes from a decision, not from chaos or chance, and this gives it even more splendour. There is a free choice expressed in the creative word. The universe did not come into being as the result of an arbitrary omnipotence, of a show of force or a desire for self-assertion. Creation belongs to the order of love. God’s love is the fundamental reason for all creation: “For Thou didst love all that exists, and Thou didst hate nothing of what Thou didst make; yea, if Thou hadst hated a thing, Thou wouldst not have created it” (Wis. 11:24) . Thus every creature is subject to the Father’s tenderness, who assigns it a place in the world. Even the fleeting life of the most insignificant being is the subject of His love, and in those few seconds of its existence He surrounds it with His affection. Saint Basil the Great said that the Creator is also “goodness without calculation” 1 and Dante Alighieri spoke of the “love that moves the sun and the other stars”. 2 Therefore, one rises from the created works “to his loving mercy”.
