Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

OVERWEGING
De Kerk gedenkt vandaag de H. Monica (+387), afkomstig uit Noord-Afrika, moeder van de heilige Augustinus. Haar naam betekent letterlijk: ‘de eenzame’. Zij gaf niet op en wist dat haar dagelijks gebed tot de Heer eens verhoord zou worden.De Kerk heeft deze unieke en gelovige moeder erkend en haar willen eren omdat zij altijd bleef geloven dat de verrezen Heer ook haar zoon nabij zou zijn, ondanks diens levenswijze. Haar volhardend gebed en haar diepgelovige levenswijze wierp vruchten af. Wij allen hebben nood aan bekering, en nood aan mensen die volhardend bidden voor ons wanneer wij ons van God afwenden. Zijn wij zulke mensen?
EERSTE LEZING I Kor. 1, 26-31
Wat voor de wereld zwak was heeft God uitverkoren.
Uit de eerste brief van de heilige apostel Paulus aan de christenen
van Korinte
Broeders en zusters,
Denkt aan uw eigen roeping.
Naar menselijke maatstaf waren er niet velen geleerd,
niet velen machtig,
niet velen van hoge afkomst.
Nee, wat voor de wereld dwaas is
heeft God uitverkoren om de wijzen te beschamen ;
wat voor de wereld zwak is
heeft God uitverkoren om het sterke te beschamen ;
wat voor de wereld van geringe afkomst is en onbeduidend
heeft God uitverkoren ;
wat niets is
om teniet te doen wat iets is,
opdat tegenover God geen mens zou roemen op zichzelf.
Dank zij Hem zijt gij in Christus Jezus
die van Godswege heel onze wijsheid is geworden,
onze gerechtigheid, heiliging en verlossing.
Daarom : Zoals er geschreven staat,
“als iemand wil roemen
laat hem roemen op de Heer.”
TUSSENZANG Ps. 33(32), 12-13, 18-19, 20-21
Zalig het volk dat de Heer heeft als God,
de natie door Hem tot zijn erfdeel gekozen.

is Hij ons een schild en een helper.

Omdat gij over weinig trouw waart :

In die tijd hield Jezus zijn leerlingen deze gelijkenis voor :
“Het zal met het Rijk der hemelen zijn als met de man
die bij zijn vertrek naar het buitenland
zijn dienaars bij zich riep
om hun zijn bezit toe te vertrouwen.
“Aan de een gaf hij vijf talenten,
aan de andere twee,
aan een derde één,
ieder naar zijn bekwaamheid.
“Daarna vertrok hij.
“Die de vijf talenten gekregen had
ging er terstond mee werken en verdiende er vijf bij.
“Zo verdiende ook degene die de twee gekregen had er twee bij.
“Maar die dat ene had gekregen
ging een gat in de grond graven
en het geld van zijn heer verbergen.
“Een hele tijd later kwam de heer van die dienaars terug
en hield afrekening met hen.
“Die de vijf talenten gekregen had trad naar voren
en bood nog vijf talenten aan met de woorden :
Heer, vijf talenten hebt gij mij toevertrouwd ;
ziehier, vijf talenten heb ik erbij verdiend.
“Zijn meester sprak tot hem :
Uitstekend, goede en trouwe dienaar,
over weinig waart ge trouw, over veel zal ik u aanstellen.
“Ga binnen in de vreugde van uw heer.
“Nu trad die van de twee talenten naar voren en zei :
Heer, twee talenten hebt gij me toevertrouwd ;
ziehier, twee talenten heb ik erbij verdiend.
“Zijn meester sprak tot hem :
Uitstekend, goede en trouwe dienaar,
over weinig waart ge trouw, over veel zal ik u aanstellen.
“Ga binnen in de vreugde van uw heer.
“Tenslotte
trad ook die het ene talent had gekregen naar voren en zei :
Heer, ik heb ervaren dat gij een hard mens zijt,
die oogst waar gij niet gezaaid hebt
en binnenhaalt waar gij niet hebt uitgestrooid.
“Daarom was ik bang
en ben uw talent in de grond gaan verbergen.
“Hier hebt ge uw eigendom terug.
“Maar zijn meester gaf hem ten antwoord :
Slechte en luie knecht,
je wist dus dat ik oogst waar ik niet gezaaid heb
en binnenhaal waar ik niet heb uitgestrooid ?
“Daarom had je mijn geld bij de bankiers moeten uitzetten,
dan zou ik bij mijn komst
mijn bezit met rente teruggekregen hebben.
“Neemt hem dus dat talent af
en geeft het aan wie de tien talenten heeft.
“Want aan ieder die heeft zal gegeven worden,
zelfs in overvloed gegeven worden ;
maar wie niet heeft,
hem zal nog ontnomen worden zelfs wat hij heeft.
“En werpt die onnutte knecht buiten in de duisternis ;
daar zal geween zijn en tandengeknars.”

CONSIDERATION
Today, the Church commemorates Saint Monica (+387), originally from North Africa, mother of Saint Augustine. Her name literally means: ’the lonely one’. The Church has recognised and honoured this unique and faithful mother because she always believed that the Risen Lord would also be close to her son, despite his lifestyle. Her persistent prayer and her deeply religious way of life bore fruit. We all need conversion, and we need people who persistently pray for us when we turn away from God. Are we such people?

God has chosen what was weak before the world.

Brothers and sisters,
Remember your own calling.
By human standards, not many were learned,
not many mighty,
not many of high birth.
No, what the world considers foolish
God has chosen to shame the wise;
what is weak in the world
God has chosen to shame the strong;
what the world deems lowly and insignificant
God has chosen ;
what is nothing
to destroy what is something,
that no man should boast of himself before God.
Thanks be to Him you are in Christ Jesus
who of God has become our wisdom,
