Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
De brief aan Titus vormt een literair geheel met de twee brieven aan Timoteüs. Zij leren ons zeer veel over de tweede generatie van de Kerk en over de bestaande kerkordening. Zo hebben we vandaag instructies over het aanstellen van presbyters (ouderlingen) die de Kerk moeten leiden (deze tekst is parallel met 1 Tim 3, 1-7). Ze moeten bepaalde eigenschappen hebben maar vooral ook garant staan voor de zuiverheid van de apostolische leer. De tijd der dwaalleraars is immers aangebroken.
EERSTE LEZING Tit. 1, 1-9
Stel presbyters aan volgens de richtlijnen die ik u heb gegeven.
Begin van de brief van de heilige apostel Paulus aan Titus
Van Paulus,
dienstknecht van God en apostel van Jezus Christus,
om Gods uitverkorenen te brengen tot het geloof
en de kennis van de ware godsdienst,
in de hoop op het eeuwige leven.
Reeds lang geleden heeft God die niet liegt, eeuwig leven beloofd
en nu, te zijner tijd, heeft Hij zijn woord openbaar gemaakt
in de verkondiging die mij is toevertrouwd
door een opdracht van God onze Heiland…
Paulus aan Titus,
zijn wettig kind in het gemeenschappelijk geloof.
Genade en vrede voor u
vanwege God onze Vader en Jezus Christus onze Heiland !
Ik heb u op Kreta achtergelaten met de bedoeling
dat gij de organisatie van de kerk zoudt voltooien
door in elke stad presbyters aan te stellen
volgens de richtlijnen die ik u heb gegeven :
onberispelijke mannen, trouwe echtgenoten,
wier kinderen gelovigen zijn
en niet in opspraak wegens losbandigheid of tuchteloosheid.
Want de leider van de gemeente moet onberispelijk zijn
als beheerder van Gods huis,
niet aanmatigend, niet driftig, niet aan de wijn verslaafd,
niet vechtlustig, niet geldgierig
maar gastvrij, deugdzaam, bezonnen,
rechtvaardig, vroom, ingetogen,
met zorg voor de overgeleverde rechtzinnige leer
en in staat om volgens de gezonde beginselen te vermanen
en tegensprekers te weerleggen.
TUSSENZANG Ps. 24(23), 1-2, 3-4ab, 5-6
Dit is het geslacht dat zich richt tot de Heer.
Aan God hoort de aarde en al wat er op is,
de aardschijf en al wat daar woont ;
want Hij heeft haar op het water gegrondvest,
haar vastgelegd op de zee.
Wie zal beklimmen de berg van de Heer,
wie in zijn heiligdom staan ?
Die rein is van handen en zuiver van hart,
zijn zinnen niet zet op wat kwaad is,
zijn evenmens niet bedriegt.
Hij zal door de Heer gezegend worden,
beloond door God, zijn verlosser.
Zo doet het geslacht dat zich richt tot Hem,
dat staat voor het aanschijn van Jakobs God.

Alleluia.
De God van onze Heer Jezus Christus
moge ons innerlijk oog verlichten,
om te zien, hoe groot de hoop is
waartoe Hij ons roept.

met de woorden : het spijt me, dan moet ge hem vergeven.

In die tijd sprak Jezus tot zijn leerlingen :
“Dat er ergernissen komen is onvermijdelijk,
maar wee de mens door wiens toedoen ze komen.
“Het zou beter voor hem zijn
als men hem een molensteen om de hals deed en in zee wierp,
dan dat hij aan een van deze kleinen aanleiding tot zonde geeft.
“Wacht u daarvoor.
“Als uw broeder gezondigd heeft, geef hem een berisping ;
toont hij dan spijt, vergeef het hem.
“Al misdoet hij zevenmaal per dag tegen u,
maar zevenmaal ook wendt hij zich tot u met de woorden :
Het spijt me,
dan moet ge hem vergeven.”
De apostelen zeiden nu tot de Heer :
“Geef ons meer geloof.”
De Heer antwoordde :
“Als ge een geloof hadt als een mosterdzaadje,
zoudt ge tot die moerbeiboom zeggen :
Maak uw wortels los uit de grond en plant u in zee,
en hij zou u gehoorzamen.”

Consideration
The letter to Titus forms a literary whole with the two letters to Timothy. They teach us very much about the second generation of the Church and about the existing Church order. For example, today we have instructions on appointing presbyters (elders) to lead the Church (this text is parallel to 1 Tim 3:1-7). They are to have certain qualities but, above all, they are to guarantee the purity of apostolic teaching. After all, the time of errorists has come.
FIRST READING Tit. 1, 1-9
Appoint presbyters according to the guidelines I have given you.
Beginning of the holy apostle Paul’s letter to Titus
From Paul,
servant of God and apostle of Jesus Christ,
to bring God’s elect to the faith
and the knowledge of the true religion,
in the hope of eternal life.
Long ago, God who does not lie promised eternal life
and now, in due time, He has made his word public
in the proclamation entrusted to me
by a commission from God our Saviour….
Paul to Titus,
his legitimate child in the common faith.
Grace and peace to you
because of God our Father and Jesus Christ our Saviour !
I left thee in Crete with the intention
that you would complete the organisation of the church
by appointing presbyters in every city
according to the directives I gave you :
blameless men, faithful husbands,
whose children are believers
and not in disrepute because of debauchery or indiscipline
For the leader of the congregation must be blameless
as administrator of God’s house,
not presumptuous, not temperamental, not addicted to wine,
not combative, not money-hungry
but hospitable, virtuous, pensive,
just, pious, subdued,
with care for the handed down orthodox doctrine
and able to admonish according to sound principles
and refute naysayers.

This is the generation that turns to the Lord.
To God belongs the earth and all that is upon it,
the disk of the earth and all that dwells therein;
for He founded her on the water,

sets not his mind on what is evil,

“If your brother has sinned, rebuke him ;
then if he shows remorse, forgive him.
“Though he transgress seven times a day against thee ,
but seven times also he turns to you with the words:
I am sorry,
then you must forgive him.”
The apostles now said to the Lord :
“Give us more faith.”
The Lord replied :
“If thou hadst faith like a mustard seed ,
would you say to that mulberry tree :
Detach thy roots from the ground and plant thyself in the sea,

Civil and political love
228. Caring for nature is part of a lifestyle that includes the ability to live together and in community. Jesus reminded us that we have God as our common Father and that this makes us brothers and sisters. Brotherly love can only be disinterested, can never be a compensation for what another accomplishes, nor an advance on what we hope he does. That is why it is possible to love our enemies. This same disinterestedness leads us to love and accept the wind, the sun or the clouds, even though they do not submit to our control. This is why we can speak of a universal brotherhood.
