en in kerkelijke rang voornaamste van de vier pauselijke basilieken in Rome.
Uitnodiging
Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

OVERWEGING
De kathedraal van de paus werd rond 320 door keizer Constantijn opgericht. Zij wordt beschouwd als moeder en hoofd van alle kerken. Dit feest herinnert ons aan de verbondenheid van de Kerk met de opvolger van Petrus, en nodigt ons uit om ook zelf te werken aan de verbondenheid met de gelovigen wereldwijd. Jezus roept ons daartoe: Om één gemeenschap te vormen door, met en in Hem; Hij is immers de hoeksteen, het fundament van de Kerk, wij zijn de bouwstenen ervan. In vreugde en verdriet, in angst of met opgetogen plannen: christenen vieren rond hun Heer Jezus. Naar Hem gaat hun eerste aandacht.
EERSTE LEZING Ez. 47, 1-2.8-9.12
Ik zag het water uit de tempel stromen.
Uit de Profeet Ezechiël
In die dagen
bracht een engel mij
naar de ingang van de tempel des Heren.
En daar zag ik onder de drempel
water opwellen en in oostelijke richting stromen ;
de voorzijde van de tempel ligt immers op het oosten.
Het water stroomde eerst zuidwaarts
langs de muur
en dan langs de zuidkant van het altaar.
Hij leidde mij door de noordpoort buitenom
naar de oostelijke buitenpoort
en rechts daarvan kwam het water weer te voorschijn.
En de engel zei :
“Dit water stroomt
door het oostelijk deel van het land
naar de Araba,
mondt uit in de Zoutzee
en maakt het water van de zee gezond.
De rivier brengt leven
overal waar hij stroomt ;
het wemelt er van dieren.
De zee zit vol vis,
want de rivier die erin uitmondt,
maakt het water gezond.
Overal waar hij stroomt, is volop leven.
Aan beide oevers van de rivier
groeien allerlei vruchtbomen ;
hun bladeren verdorren niet
en ze zijn nooit zonder vruchten.
Elke maand dragen ze vruchten,
omdat het water dat ze voedt,
uit het heiligdom komt.
De vruchten zijn eetbaar
en de bladeren hebben geneeskracht.”

Een klaterend beekje verkwikt Gods stad,
het heilig verblijf van de Allerhoogste.
De Heer is voor ons een vesting en toevlucht,
een machtige hulp in de nood.
Zo zijn we niet bang, al kantelt de aarde,
al vallen de bergen in zee.

Die stad staat onwrikbaar want God is daarbinnen,
God staat haar terzij als de dag begint.

TWEEDE LEZING I Kor. 3, 9b-11.16-17
Gij zijt de tempel van God.
Uit de eerste brief van de heilige apostel Paulus aan de christenen van Korinte
Broeders en zusters,
Gij zijt Gods bouwwerk.
Naar de mij gegeven genade heb ik als een kundig bouwmeester
het fundament gelegd waarop een ander voortbouwt.
Maar laat iedereen toezien hoe hij daarop bouwt.
Want niemand kan een ander fundament leggen
dan wat er reeds ligt, namelijk Jezus Christus.
Gij weet toch dat gij Gods tempel zijt
en dat de Geest van God in u woont ?
Als iemand de tempel van God te gronde richt
zal God hem te gronde richten.
Want de tempel van God is heilig
en die tempel zijt gij.

EVANGELIE Joh. 2, 13-22
Hij sprak over de tempel van zijn lichaam.
Uit het heilig evangelie van onze Heer Jezus Christus volgens
Johannes
Toen het paasfeest der Joden nabij was
ging Jezus op naar Jeruzalem.
In de tempel trof Hij de verkopers aan
van runderen, schapen en duiven
en ook de geldwisselaars die daar zaten.
Hij maakte van touwen een gesel,
dreef ze allemaal uit de tempel,
ook de schapen en de runderen ;
het kleingeld van de wisselaars veegde Hij van de tafels
en Hij wierp die omver.
En tot de duivenhandelaars zei Hij :
“Weg met dit alles !
“Maakt van het huis van mijn Vader geen markthal !”
Zijn leerlingen herinnerden zich dat er geschreven staat :
De ijver voor uw huis zal mij verteren.
De Joden richtten zich tot Hem met de woorden :
“Wat voor teken kunt Gij ons laten zien
dat Gij dit doen moogt ?”
Waarop Jezus hun antwoordde :
“Breekt deze tempel af
en in drie dagen zal Ik hem doen herrijzen.”
Maar de Joden merkten op :
“Zesenveertig jaar is aan deze tempel gebouwd ;
zult Gij hem dan in drie dagen doen herrijzen ?”
Jezus echter sprak over de tempel van zijn lichaam.
Toen Hij dan ook verrezen was uit de doden
herinnerden zijn leerlingen zich dat Hij dit gezegd had,
en zij geloofden in de Schrift
en in het woord dat Jezus gesproken had.

Today we celebrate the foundation
of the Basilica of St. John of Lateran.
Just as the Temple in Jerusalem was for the Jews
a sign of unity,
the bishop’s seat of Rome is for us.
For the successor of Peter watches over
the unity of the Church in all her diversity
and founded in Christ and his Gospel.
In this way she can bear rich fruit
all over the world.
FIRST READING Ez. 47, 1-2.8-9.12
I saw the water flowing out of the temple.
From the Prophet Ezekiel
In those days
an angel brought me
to the entrance of the temple of the Lord.
And there I saw under the threshold
water rising up and flowing in an easterly direction ;
for the front of the temple faces east.

and then along the south side of the altar.
He led me out through the north gate
to the eastern outer gate
and to the right of it the water came again.

and he overthrew them.

His disciples remembered that it is written :

and in three days I will raise it up again.
But the Jews remarked :
“Forty-six years this temple has been built ;

Jesus, however, spoke of the temple of His body.

His disciples remembered that He had said this,
and they believed the scripture

230. The example of Saint Teresa of Lisieux invites us to practise the small way of love, not to lose any opportunity for a kind word, a smile, every small gesture that sows peace and friendship. An integral ecology also consists of simple daily gestures, where we break the logic of violence, exploitation, selfishness. Conversely, the world of consumption driven to extremes is at the same time the world of the mistreatment of life in all its forms.
