Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
In de tweede eeuw vóór Christus was Elia een haast legendarisch figuur, even groot als Mozes. Hij zou wederkomen op het einde der tijden om de komst van de Messias voor te bereiden. In bepaalde joodse kringen is het nu nog een mooie gewoonte om aan tafel een extra plaats te voorzien voor Elia. Jezus alludeert op dat joodse geloof, door het door te trekken naar de figuur van Johannes de Doper. Elia is gekomen, maar men heeft hem niet herkend. Opnieuw worden we gewaarschuwd om het gunstige ogenblik niet te laten voorbijgaan. God komt ook nu. Laten we daarom de tekenen van de tijd leren lezen en de komst van God in ons dagelijks leven niet missen.
EERSTE LEZING Sir. 48, 1-4.9-11
Elia zal wederkomen.
Uit het Boek Ecclesiasticus
Elia de profeet stond op als een vuur;
zijn woord brandde als een fakkel;
hij bracht hongersnood over het volk
en in zijn ijveren voor de Heer maakte hij hen weinig in aantal.
Door het woord van de Heer sloot hij de hemel toe,
en evenzo liet hij driemaal vuur neerdalen.
Hoe roemrijk werd gij, Elia, door uw wonderwerken:
Wie mag zich als gij beroemen?
Gij die werd opgenomen in een wervelstorm van vuur
op een wagen met vurige paarden,
van wie geschreven staat dat hij bestemd is voor de tijd
waarop hij de toorn van God zal stillen vóórdat hij ontbrandt,
het hart van de vaderen zal keren tot de zoon
en de stammen van Jakob zal oprichten.
Gelukkig zij, die u gezien hebben
en in liefde zijn ontslapen.
TUSSENZANG Ps. 80(79), 2ac, 3b, 15-16, 18-19
God van de heerscharen, richt ons weer op ;
lach ons weer toe en wij zullen gered zijn.
Herder van Israël, hoor ons aan,
Gij die troont op de Kerubs, verschijn met luister ;
werp uw macht in de strijd,
kom om ons bij te staan.
God van de heerscharen, keer toch terug,
zie neer uit de hemel en let op uw wijngaard.
Bescherm wat uw eigen hand heeft geplant,
het stekje dat Gij hebt gekweekt.
Laat uw hand op uw gunsteling rusten,
op het kind dat Gij grootgebracht hebt.
Nooit meer zullen wij U verlaten ;
bewaart Gij ons leven, dan prijzen wij U.

Bij het afdalen van de berg
stelden de leerlingen Jezus de vraag:
“Waarom zeggen de schriftgeleerden toch
dat eerst Elia moet komen?”
Hij gaf hun ten antwoord:
“Inderdaad, Elia zal komen om alles te herstellen.
Ik zeg u zelfs:
Elia is reeds gekomen,
maar zij hebben hem niet erkend
doch naar willekeur met hem gehandeld,
zoals ook de Mensenzoon van hen te lijden zal hebben.”
Nu begrepen de leerlingen
dat Hij hun over Johannes de Doper gesproken had.

Invitation
May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Consideration
In the second century BC, Elijah was an almost legendary figure, as great as Moses. He would return at the end of time to prepare for the coming of the Messiah. In certain Jewish circles today, it is still a fine custom to provide an extra place at the table for Elijah. Jesus alludes to that Jewish belief by extending it to the figure of John the Baptist. Elia came, but people did not recognise him. Again, we are warned not to let the auspicious moment pass. God is also coming now. Let us therefore learn to read the signs of the times and not miss the coming of God in our daily lives.
FIRST READING Sir. 48, 1-4.9-11
Elijah will return.
From the Book of Ecclesiasticus
Elijah the prophet rose up like a fire;
his word burned like a torch;
he brought famine upon the people
and in his zeal for the Lord he made them few in number.
By the word of the Lord he closed the heavens,
and likewise he sent down fire three times.
How glorious were thou, Elijah, by thy miraculous works:
Who may boast like thee?
Thou who wast taken up in a whirlwind of fire
on a chariot with fiery horses,
of whom it is written that he is destined for the time
when he shall appease the wrath of God before it ignites,
will turn the hearts of the fathers to the son
and raise up the tribes of Jacob.
Happy are those who have seen you
and slept in love.

God of hosts, raise us up again ;

On descending from the mountain
the disciples asked Jesus the question:
“Why do the scribes still say
that Elijah must come first?”
He answered them:
“Indeed, Elijah will come to restore everything.
In fact, I tell you:
Elijah has already come,
but they have not acknowledged him
but dealt with him at will,
as also the Son of Man will suffer from them.”
Now the disciples understood
that He had spoken to them about John the Baptist.
