Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Bij Elisabeth is Maria getuige van de grote dingen die God aan kleine mensen doet. Zij blijken zijn voorkeur weg te dragen. Met de Schriftwoorden in haar hart overwogen, bezingt Maria de onvoorstelbare kracht van God, die ook haar overschaduwt. Zij is gelukkig om wie God is. Het Magnificat van Maria is het danklied van alle kleine mensen, die in hun leven het geluk toelaten dat God wil bewerken. Dat ook wij mogen ervaren en belijden: De Heer doet mijn hart van vreugde slaan (1 S 2,1).
EERSTE LEZING 1 Sam. 1, 24-28
Hanna dankt de Heer voor de geboorte van Samuël
Uit het eerste Boek Samuël
In die dagen nam Hanna Samuël mee,
met een driejarige stier, een efa meel en een zak wijn.
Zij bracht de jongen, zo klein als hij was,
naar de tempel van de Heer in Silo.
Zij slachtten de stier en brachten de jongen naar Eli.
Daarbij zei Hanna :
“Met uw verlof, mijn heer, zo waar u leeft, mijn heer,
ik ben de vrouw die hier gestaan heeft
om tot de Heer te bidden, in uw tegenwoordigheid.
“Om deze jongen heb ik gebeden
en de Heer heeft mij gegeven wat ik van hem heb afgesmeekt.
“Daarom sta ik hem aan de Heer af.
“Zolang hij leeft, blijft hij de Heer afgestaan.”
En zij bogen zich daar voor God de Heer neer.

De Heer doet mijn hart van vreugde slaan.
De Heer doet mijn hart van vreugde slaan,
mijn God heeft mijn hoofd opgeheven.
Nu sta ik mijn mededingers te woord
omdat ik zijn bijstand geniet.
De bogen der dapperen worden gebroken,
de zwakken worden met kracht omgord.
De rijken moeten hun brood gaan verdienen,
die honger leed hoeft geen werk meer te doen.
De kinderloze baart zeven maal,
de schoot van de moeder verdort.
De Heer beschikt over sterven en leven,
Hij leidt naar de dood en Hij roept weer terug.
De Heer schenkt armoede evenals rijkdom,
vernedering brengt Hij en eer.
Hij richt de onmachtige op uit het stof,
verheft uit het vuil de geringe ;
Hij geeft hem een zetel onder de vorsten,
verleent hem een eervolle plaats.
Want Hij is de Heer van de zuilen der aarde
waarop Hij de aardschijf eens heeft geplaatst.

Bij haar bezoek aan Elisabeth sprak Maria :
“Mijn hart prijst hoog de Heer.
“Van vreugde juicht mijn geest om God, mijn redder,
daar Hij welwillend neerzag op de kleinheid zijner dienstmaagd.
“En zie, van heden af prijst elk geslacht mij zalig
omdat Hij die machtig is aan mij zijn wonderwerken deed,
en heilig is zijn Naam.
“Barmhartig is Hij, van geslacht tot geslacht
voor hen die Hem vrezen.
“Hij toont de kracht van zijn arm ;
slaat trotsen van hart uiteen.
“Heersers ontneemt Hij hun troon,
maar Hij verheft de geringen.
“Die hongeren overlaadt Hij met gaven,
en rijken zendt Hij heen met lege handen.
“Zijn dienaar Israël heeft Hij zich aangetrokken,
gedachtig zijn barmhartigheid voor eeuwig
jegens Abraham en zijn geslacht,
gelijk Hij had gezegd tot onze Vaderen.”
Nadat Maria ongeveer drie maanden bij haar gebleven was
keerde zij naar huis terug.

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijk huis
144. De consumptistische visie op de mens, die door het raderwerk van de geglobaliseerde economie wordt begunstigd, neigt ertoe de culturen homogeen te maken en de immense culturele verscheidenheid te verzwakken, die een schat van de mensheid is. Beweren dat men alle moeilijkheden door uniforme normenstelsels of met technische ingrepen oplost, leidt daarom ertoe dat de complexiteit van de lokale problemen, die om een actieve deelname van de bewoners vragen, wordt verwaarloosd. De nieuwe processen in voorbereiding kunnen niet altijd worden geïntegreerd in modellen die van buitenaf worden bepaald, maar uit de lokale cultuur zelf voortkomen. Zo moet, evenals het leven en de wereld dynamisch zijn, de zorg van de wereld flexibel en dynamisch zijn. Puur technische oplossingen dreigen te kijken naar symptomen, die niet met de diepste problemen overeenkomen. Het is noodzakelijk zich het perspectief van de rechten van de volken en de culturen eigen te maken en zo te begrijpen dat de ontwikkeling van een maatschappelijke groepering een historisch proces binnen een culturele context veronderstelt en vraagt om een prominente rol van de lokale maatschappelijke acteurs uitgaande van hun eigen cultuur. Evenmin kan men het begrip kwaliteit van leven opdringen, maar moet dit begrepen worden binnen de wereld van symbolen en gewoonten die aan iedere menselijke groepering eigen zijn.

Consideration
With Elisabeth, Mary witnesses the great things God does to little people. They appear to carry away His preference. Contemplating the words of Scripture in her heart, Mary sings of the unimaginable power of God, who overshadows her too. She is happy because of who God is. Mary’s Magnificat is the song of thanksgiving of all little people, who allow in their lives the happiness that God wants to work. That we too may experience and confess: The Lord makes my heart beat with joy (1 S 2,1).

Hanna thanks the Lord for the birth of Samuel
From the first Book of Samuel
In those days Hanna took Samuel,
with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour and a sack of wine.
She brought the boy, as small as he was,
to the temple of the Lord in Silo.
They slaughtered the bull and brought the boy to Eli.
At that, Hanna said :
“By your leave, my lord, so true as you live, my lord.
I am the woman who has stood here
to pray to the Lord, in your presence.
“For this boy I have prayed
and the Lord has given me what I begged from him.
“Therefore, I commend him to the Lord.
“As long as he lives, he will remain with the Lord.”
And they bowed down there before God the Lord.

The Lord make my heart beat for joy.
The Lord make my heart glad,
my God has lifted up my head.
Now I stand with my competitors
because I have his help.

On her visit to Elisabeth, Mary spoke :
“My heart praises the Lord on high.
“My spirit rejoices for God, my Saviour :
For He looked kindly on the smallness of his handmaid.
“And behold, from this day forth every generation doth bless me
because He that is mighty hath wrought his wondrous works upon me,
and holy is his Name.
“Merciful is He from generation to generation
unto them that fear him.
“He showeth the power of his arm ;
dismembereth the proud in heart.
“He overthrows the rulers of their thrones,
but He exalts the humble.
“He lavishes gifts on the hungry,
He sends the rich away with empty hands.
“His servant Israel hath He taken unto himself,
remembering his mercy forever
toward Abraham and his seed,
as He had said to our fathers.”
After Mary had stayed with her for about three months
she returned home.

On Care of the Common Home
144. A consumerist vision of human beings, encouraged by the mechanisms of today’s globalized economy, has a levelling effect on cultures, diminishing the immense variety which is the heritage of all humanity. Attempts to resolve all problems through uniform regulations or technical interventions can lead to overlooking the complexities of local problems which demand the active participation of all members of the community. New processes taking shape cannot always fit into frameworks imported from outside; they need to be based in the local culture itself. As life and the world are dynamic realities, so our care for the world must also be flexible and dynamic. Merely technical solutions run the risk of addressing symptoms and not the more serious underlying problems. There is a need to respect the rights of peoples and cultures, and to appreciate that the development of a social group presupposes an historical process which takes place within a cultural context and demands the constant and active involvement of local people from within their proper culture. Nor can the notion of the quality of life be imposed from without, for quality of life must be understood within the world of symbols and customs proper to each human group.
