Consideration
Water and life have been intimately intertwined in human history. Water is an image of life. Immersing ourselves in water at baptism is an act of entrusting ourselves to life. We can do so because God himself descended into the water of life when he became man with men. When Jesus entered the water, He expressed in a symbolic act the mystery of the Incarnation. With the water, all human existence was also sanctified. Jesus drew a trail there that not only leads to healing and salvation, but He prepared for us, through His life, suffering and death, a victory and unprecedented future.
FIRST READING Isa 42:1-4,6-7
This is My servant in whom I take pleasure.
From the prophet Isaiah
Thus speaks the Lord:
“This is My servant whom I sustain,
my chosen one in whom I take pleasure:
My spirit I pour out upon him,
righteousness he makes shine upon the nations.
“He does not cry out, he does not shout
and in the street he does not raise his voice.
“The snapped reed he will not break,
the languishing flax seed not quench,
in dignity he will make justice shine.
“Untouched and unbroken
he will make justice prevail on earth:
The distant shores look forward to his teaching.”
“I, the Lord, call you in righteousness,
I take thee by the hand and watch over thee
and make you to men the sign of my covenant
and a light to the nations.
“Blind thou shalt open the eyes,
deliver captives from their dungeon
and out of prison all who sit in darkness.”
Responsorial Ps 29(28), 1-2, 3-4, 3b and 9c and 10
Refrain
God blesses his people with peace.
Homage the Lord, all the children of God,
hail the Lord for his glory and power.
Homage the Lord for his glory and his Name,
kneel before Him for his holy glory.
The voice of the Lord shouts over the water,
God’s majesty calls from across the sea.
The voice of the Lord with thundering violence,
the voice of the Lord, awe-inspiring!
God’s majesty calls from over the sea,
his temple echoes of his glory.
The Lord enthrones above the firmament,
there He sits eternally as King.
SECOND READING Acts 10:34-38
The Lord anointed Him with the Holy Spirit.
From the Acts of the Apostles
At that time Peter took the floor and spoke:
“Only now do I realise,
that with God there is no regard for persons,
but that, from whatever nation,
every one who fears Him and does good,
is pleasing to Him.
“The word He sent to the children of Israel
when, through Jesus Christ, He
proclaimed the glad tidings of peace:
This one is Lord of all.
“Thou knowest what happened all over Judea;
how Jesus of Nazareth began his action in Galilee
after the baptism which John preached,
and how God anointed Him
with the Holy Spirit and with power.
“He went about beneficently
and healed all
who were under the compulsion of the devil ,
for God was with Him.”
Verse for the gospel Cf. Mk 9:6
Alleluia.
The heavens opened and the voice of the Father said:
This is my Son, the Well-Beloved, listen to Him.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mt 3:13-17
After Jesus was baptised, He saw the Spirit of God come upon Him.
From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew
At that time Jesus came from Galilee
to the Jordan River to John to be baptised by Him.
But John wanted to stop Him saying:
“I need thy baptism, and thou comest to me?”
Jesus replied:
“Let it be now; for thus it befits us
all that is established to be accomplished.”
Then John admitted Him.
After Jesus was baptised,
He immediately rose out of the water.
And behold, there the heavens opened
and He saw the Spirit of God descending
in the form of a dove
and came upon Himself.
And a voice from heaven spoke:
“This is My Son, My beloved ,
in whom I am well pleased.”

On caring for the common home
45. In some places in urban and rural areas, the privatisation of space has made citizens’ access to areas of special beauty difficult; elsewhere, “ecological” residential areas have been created, available only to the few, where care is taken to avoid others entering to disturb an artificial tranquillity. One often finds a beautiful city, full of well-groomed green spaces in some “safe” areas, but it is not so in less visible zones, where the dumped of society live.
