May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every morning from 7 a.m.

Opening word
The days are gradually getting longer,
it is already staying light a little longer.
Here, too, we come to seek light,
the light of God and of Jesus,
the light of our faith and of each other.
Worldwide, this Sunday is celebrated among Christians
as the Sunday of the Word of God.
May we too experience today
that the Word of God is a light for us
that we may carry with us through our lives
that gives direction to our actions
and through which the Lord speaks to us personally.
May we open our hearts and lives
to his Word and his mercy.

FIRST READING        Isa 8.23b-9.3
The people see a great light.

From the prophet Isaiah

In former times dishonour was brought
on the land of Zebulun and on the land of Naphtali,
but in the future honour will be brought
over the sea route
and across the Jordan,
and over the region of the Gentiles.

The people walking in darkness ,
see a great light;
a light shines upon those
who dwell in the land of dead darkness.
Thou hast their happiness multiplied,
increased their joy.
Before thy face they are full of joy,
an happiness like that for harvest,
like that of men,
who rejoice when dividing the spoils.

For the yoke that weighed heavily on the people ,
the rod on their shoulders
and the rod of their drivers:
Thou hast broken them
as in the days of Midian.

Responsorial Psalm   Ps. 27(26), 1, 4, 13-14

The Lord is my light and my guide.

The Lord is my light and my guide,
whom should I fear;
the Lord is the brace of my life,
whom should I fear?

One thing I ask the Lord, more I will not wish:
That I may dwell in God’s house as long as I live.
That I may experience the loveliness of the Lord,
may see his temple again with my own eyes.

I count on being in the land of the living
to behold the salvation of the Lord.
Look forward to the Lord and stand firm bravely,
Be bold in heart and trust in the Lord.

SECOND READING         I Cor. 1:10-13.17
Be all of you united, let there be no divisions among you.

From the holy apostle Paul’s first letter to the Christians of Corinth

Brothers and sisters,

I beseech you by the name of Jesus Christ:
Be all of you united,
let there be no divisions among you;
be completely of one mind and one opinion.

For I have been told about you by the housemates of Cloë,
brothers and sisters, that there is discord among you.
Each of you seems to have his own slogan:
‘I am of Paul’. ‘I of Apollos’.
‘I of Cephas’. ‘I of Christ’.
Is Christ divided into pieces then ?
Has Paul been crucified for you ?
Or are ye baptised in the name of Paul ?

Christ did not send me to baptise.
He sent me to preach the gospel ,
and that not with fine and learned words;
otherwise the cross of Christ would lose its power.

Verse for the gospel Mt 4:23

Jesus proclaimed the Good News of the kingdom,
He healed all diseases and ailments among the people.

GOSPEL        Mt 4:12-23 or 12-17
He settled in Capernaum so that the word of the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled.

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew

When Jesus learned that John had been captured,
He fled to Galilee.
However, passing by Nazareth
He settled in Capernaum
on the shore of the lake,
in the border region of Zebulun and Naphtali,
that the word of the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

“Land of Zebulon, land of Naftali,
lying by the sea, Overjordan:
Galilee of the Gentiles !
“The people who sat in darkness ,
beheld a great light;
and over those who sat in the land
of dead darkness were seated ,
upon them a light arose.”

From then on Jesus began preaching and saying:
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Once when He was standing by the Sea of Galilee,
He saw two brothers, Simon called Peter
and his brother Andrew.
They were casting out the net in the lake,
for they were fishermen.
He spoke to them:
“Come, follow Me;
I will make you fishers of men.”
Immediately they abandoned their nets and followed Him.
A little further on, He saw two more brothers,
James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John,
with their father Zebedee they were in the boat
preparing the nets.
He called them,
and immediately they left the boat and their father
and followed Him.
Jesus went around all over Galilee,
as He acted as a teacher in the synagogues,
proclaiming the Good News of the Kingdom
and cured all diseases and ailments among the people.

On caring for the common home

58. In some countries, there are positive examples of results in improving the environment, such as the rehabilitation of some rivers that have been polluted for so many decades, the restoration of indigenous forests or the beautification of landscapes with environmental restoration or construction projects of great aesthetic value, advances in producing non-polluting energy, in improving public transport. These actions do not solve the world’s problems, but they do confirm that the human being is still capable of positive intervention. Because it was created to love, acts of generosity, solidarity and care inevitably blossom amid its limitations.
