Invitation
May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Opening word
‘You are the salt of the earth and the light of the world’: Jesus tells us today.
These words help us to better understand our mission
as a Christian in this world.
They challenge us not to fold back on ourselves ,
but to bear witness to the beauty of the Gospel.
Let us celebrate Eucharist with a grateful heart
and praise God for the great trust He places in us.
FIRST READING Isa 58:7-10
Your light will shine like the dawn.
From the prophet Isaiah
This is what the Lord says:
“Share your bread with the hungry,
take into thy house the homeless tramps,
clothe the naked whom thou seest,
and turn not away from your fellow men.
“Then your light will shine like the dawn,
thy healing shall prosper;
thy righteousness shall go forth before thee,
the glory of the Lord follow thee closely.
“When then thou prayest unto the Lord, He shall hear thee,
when then ye cry unto Him, He shall answer:
Here am I!
“When ye remove from among you the oppression
and the threatening fingers and evil speaking,
when thou openest thine heart to the hungry
and satiate the gloomy ,
then thy light shines in the darkness,
then thy night becomes like noon.”

Refrain
For the righteous, the light rises in the night.
He is to the pious a light in the night,
beneficent, merciful, just.
Good goes the man who gives away and borrows,
who manages his affairs honestly.
In eternity the righteous stands strong,
he is remembered forever.
From bad tidings he is not afraid,
he continues to trust in the Lord unshaken.
Steadfast and fearless he perseveres,
with mildness he gives to the poor.
He will never lose his righteousness;
his power and prestige increase continually.
SECOND READING 1 Cor 2:1-5
I proclaim to you the testimony of Christ and his cross.
From the holy apostle Paul’s first letter to the Christians of Corinth
Brothers and sisters,
When I came to proclaim to you the testimony of God ,
I did not do so
with displays of eloquence or learning.
I had resolved to bring you no knowledge whatsoever
than that of Jesus Christ and his cross.
Moreover, I felt weak, nervous and anxious at the time.
The word I proclaimed to you ,
owed nothing to the persuasive power of ‘wisdom’,
but it testified to the power of the Spirit:
Your faith was not to rest on human wisdom
but on the power of God.
Verse for the gospel John 8:12
Alleluia.
I am the light of the world, says the Lord.
Whoever follows me will possess the light of life.

GOSPEL Mt 5:13-16
Thou art the light of the world.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew
At that time, Jesus said to his disciples:
“Thou art the salt of the earth.
“But if salt loses its strength ,
with what shall one salt?
“It is no more virtuous for anything than to be thrown away
and trampled by men.
“Thou art the light of the world.
“A city cannot be hidden
if it is on top of a mountain.
“Surely one does not light a lamp
to put them under the bushel,
but one places it on the standard,
so that it gives light to all who are in the house.
“So also your light should shine before the eyes of men
that they may see your good works
and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

72. The Psalms repeatedly invite the human being to praise God the Creator, He who “stretched out the earth over the waters, for everlasting is His mercy” (Ps 136:6) . But the other creatures also invite praise: “Sun and moon, glorify Him, praise Him, radiant stars, Praise Him, highest heavenly wreaths, water that is above the firmament. Now let them praise the name of the Lord, for his command has created them all” (Ps 148:3-5) . We exist not only by the power of God, but before Him and with Him. That is why we worship Him.
