Paul arrives with his companions in Philippi, an important city and Roman colony. There he is given hospitality by Lydia. To Philippi, despite much opposition (see tomorrow), Paul has the best memories. His letter to the church in Philippi does not have the usual and sometimes sharp reprimands (cf. 1 and 2 Cor.) but overflows with appreciation and sympathy. Only from the Philippians did he want to receive monetary support in his distress.
FIRST READING Acts 16, 11-15
The Lord made the heart of a God-fearing woman receptive to what Paul was saying.
From the Acts of the Apostles
We – Paul and Silas –
set sail from Troas and went first to Samotráke,
the next day to Neápolis
and from there to Philippi,
a city in the first district of Macedonia and a colony.
In that city, we stayed for several days.
On the Sabbath we went outside the gate to the bank of the river,
where we thought there was a house of prayer.
We sat down and spoke to the women who had gathered there.
A certain Lydia also listened,
who came from the city of Tyatira
and she sold purple cloth.
She was a God-fearer
and the Lord made her heart receptive
to what Paul was saying.
After she and her household had been baptized
she invited us and said :
“If you think
that I really believe in the Lord,
then come into my house
and take up your abode there.”
And she urged us strongly.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 149, 1-2, 3-4, 5-6a, 9b
Our Lord, who loves his people,
crowns the afflicted with victorious wreaths.
or: Alleluia.
Sing to the Lord a new song,
His praise resoundeth amid of his people.
Israel shall rejoice with his Creator,
Let Zion’s sons hail their king.
Praise his name in a holy dance,
Play harp and zither before him.
For our Lord, who loves his people,
Crowns the afflicted with victorious wreaths.
So rejoice, ye saints, at your triumph,
celebrate in your army places.
Go with the song of God in your mouths,
a task that honors his pious ones.
ALLELUIA
Alleluia.
Christ rose from the grave,
He who died for us on the cross.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL John 15, 26-16, 4a
The Spirit of truth will testify about me.
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John
At that time Jesus said to his disciples :
“When the Helper comes
I will send you from the Father,
the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father,
He will bear witness about me.
“But you also must bear witness,
for from the beginning, you have been with Me.
“This I have told you so that you may not fall.
“They shall banish thee from the synagogue.
“Yea, the time is coming
when everyone that killeth thee will think
an act of worship.
“They will do so
because they have not acknowledged either the Father or Me.
“This I have told you
that when the time comes,
thou mayest remember that I have said it unto thee.”

On Care of the Common Home
170. Some of the strategies for low pollutant gas emissions aimed at internationalizing environmental costs, with the risk of imposing onerous obligations, equal to those of the most industrialized countries, on countries with fewer resources. The imposition of these measures penalizes the countries most in need of development. In this way, a new injustice is added under the guise of caring for the environment. In this case, too, one goes from the rain into the drizzle. Since the effects of climate change will be felt for a long time, even if rigorous measures were taken now, some countries with scarce resources will need help to adapt to the effects that are already becoming visible and affecting their economies. It remains certain that there are common but differentiated responsibilities, simply because, as the bishops of Bolivia have said, “the countries that have benefited from a high level of industrialization at the cost of huge greenhouse gas emissions have a greater responsibility to contribute to solving the problems they have caused”.
