Thursday – Ascension of the Lord

Jesus Christ ascended to God, his Father in heaven

Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with you the joy of the Gospel.
Everyone, no one except,
can experience this joy by opening his heart
to the healing effect of God’s word.

Available every day

Opening words
Today we celebrate the feast of our dear Lord Ascension.
Jesus, the Resurrected One, has come home to the Father.
We look up with Him to heaven
in which He has been taken up.
It is a homecoming that is also promised to us:
We are on our way to the same heavenly home.
First, we still have the task here on earth
to do everything He has set before us.
May this celebration focus us on that
and may the Spirit strengthen us to that end.

FIRST READING Acts 1,1-11

In front of them, the Lord was lifted up.

From the Acts of the Apostles

I wrote my first book, Teóphilus, about everything
about all that Jesus did and taught up to the day
when He gave His commission to the apostles
whom He had chosen by the Holy Spirit,
and after which He was taken up to heaven.
After His death, He showed them many proofs
that He was alive.
He appeared to them for forty days
and spoke to them of the kingdom of God.
While He was eating with them
He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem,
but to await the promise of the Father
which, He said, you have heard from Me:
“John baptized with water,
but in a few days, you will be
baptized with the Holy Spirit.
And when they were once assembled
they asked Him the question:
“Lord, wilt Thou at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”
But He answered them:
“It is not for you to know the day and hour
which the Father has set in His power.
But you shall receive power
of the Holy Spirit who is coming upon you
to be my witnesses in Jerusalem,
in all Judea and Samaria
and to the end of the earth.”
After these words
He was lifted up in their presence
and a cloud took Him from their sight.
As they gazed anxiously at Him at the moment of His ascension,
suddenly two men in white robes stood before them and said:
“Men of Galilee!
What are you gazing at in the sky?
This Jesus, who has been taken away from you into heaven,
will return in the same way
as you have seen Him go to heaven.”

Responsorial   Ps. 47(46), 2-3, 6-7, 8-9

Refrain
God ascends to the throne with loud cheering,
the Lord with the sounding of trumpets.

All nations, clap your hands,
rejoice before God with glad tidings.
For the Lord is great and all-pervading,
a mighty prince over all the earth.

God ascends to the throne with loud cheering,
the Lord with the sound of trumpets.
Sing now to God, let your singing be heard,
to our King a song of praise!

King is God over all the earth,
so sing a psalm to Him.
King is God over all nations,
sitting upon his holy throne.

SECOND READING         Eph. 1:17-23

God set Him at His right hand in the heavens.

From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of
Ephesus

Brothers and sisters,

I beseech the God of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Father of Glory,
to give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation
to know Him truly.
May He enlighten your inner eye
to see
how great is the hope to which He calls you,
how rich is the glory of His inheritance
amid the saints
and how great is His power in us who believe?
The same strength and power He demonstrated in Christ,
when He raised Him from the dead
and set Him at His right hand in the heavens,
high above all dominions,
powers, might, and loftiness
and above every name that is named,
not only in this age but also in the age to come.

Everything God has put under His feet,
and Himself exalted above all things,
He has been given as Head of the Church
which is His body,
the fullness of Him, Who fulfills all in all.

Verse for the Gospel       Mt 28, 19a.20

Alleluia.
Go and make all nations my disciples,
says the Lord;
I am with you all the days until the consummation of the world.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL          Mt 28, 16-20

All power has been given to me in heaven and on earth.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Matthew

At that time the eleven disciples made their way to Galilee,
to the mountain, Jesus had pointed out to them.
When they saw Him,
they threw themselves down in worship;
some, however, doubted.
Jesus approached and spoke to them:

“All power has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
Go therefore and make all nations my disciples
and baptize them
in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
and teach them to observe all that I have commanded you.
“Behold, I am with you
all the days until the consummation of the world.”

POPE FRANCIS

On Care of the Common Home

173. Enforceable international agreements are urgently needed since local authorities are not always capable of effective intervention. Relations between states must be respectful of each other’s sovereignty, but must also lay down mutually agreed means of averting regional disasters which would eventually affect everyone. Global regulatory norms are needed to impose obligations and prevent unacceptable actions, for example, when powerful companies or countries dump contaminated waste or offshore polluting industries in other countries.
