Available every day.
Considerations
On repeat, we saw how catechesis was often minimal initially. Nor does Paul stay that long in Philippi, Thessalonica, Berea, Athens to teach. That is why it is so surprising that he stays in Corinth for a year and a half. This unusual course of action is explained in Luke by a vision. Corinth will become an important Christian congregation and Paul is to make a special effort there. There is something else special in this text. Gallio is the philosopher’s brother and he was proconsul in 50-51. This becomes for us an important element of dating Paul’s stay in Corinth and of his first letter to the Thessalonians.
FIRST READING Acts 18:9-18
In this city, many people belong to Me.
From the Acts of the Apostles
When Paul was staying at Corinth
the Lord spoke to him in a night vision :
“Do not be afraid
but speak, and do not be silent.
“I am with you
and no one will touch you to harm you,
for in this city many people belong to Me.”
For a year and a half he stayed there
while he taught the word of God among them.
However, under the proconsulship of Gallio in Achaia
the Jews turned as one against Paul
and brought him to trial.
They declared :
“This man seeks to persuade people
to unlawful god worship.”
Paul was just about to say something
when Gallio replied to the Jews:
“If it was about some injustice or serious crime, Jews ,
I would naturally listen to you patiently.
“But are the disputes about a word ,
about names and about that Law of yours,
then ye must see for yourselves.
“On that I will not be a judge.”
He chased them away from his judgment seat.
Now all threw themselves on Sóstenes, the ruler of the synagogue,
and spanked him in front of the judgment seat.
Gallio did not care.
Paul remained there for many days,
then said goodbye to the brothers
and set sail for Syria in the company of Priscilla and Aquila.
First he had had his head hair cut off in Kenchreë
for he was under vow.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 47(46), 2-3, 4-5, 6-7
King is God over all the earth.
Or: Alleluia
All nations, clap their hands,
rejoice before God with joyful shouts.
For great is the Lord and formidable everywhere,
a mighty prince over all the earth.
Nations He delivers to us
and nations He lays at our feet.
He chooses the inheritance for us,
the pride of Jacob, his beloved.
God rises to the throne under loud cheers,
the Lord with blasts of trumpets.
Sing now to God, let sound your song,
to our King a song of praise!
ALLELUIA Jn 16:28
Alleluia.
I went forth from the Father
and have come into the world ;
again I leave the world and go to the Father.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Jn 16:20-23a
Your joy no one will be able to take away from you.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John
At that time Jesus said to his disciples :
“Verily, verily, I say unto you :
Ye shall weep and lament
while the world shall rejoice.
“Ye shall be sorrowful ,
but thy sorrow shall be turned into joy.
“When the woman goes to give birth she is sorrowful
because her hour has come ;
but when she has brought the baby into the world
she no longer thinks of the pain,
of joy that a human being has come into the world.
“So be ye also sorrowful now ,
but when I shall see thee again thy heart shall rejoice
and thy joy no one will be able to take away from thee.
“On that day ye shall question Me about nothing.”

On caring for the common home
174. We also mention the system of ocean governance. After all, although there have been several international and regional conventions, fragmentation and the absence of strict regulatory, monitoring and sanctioning systems ultimately undermine all efforts of force. The growing problem of marine waste and the protection of not only national borders but also marine areas remains a particular challenge. Ultimately, we need an agreement on management arrangements for the whole range of so-called global common goods.
