CONSIDERATION

In this Gospel, the false self-confidence of the disciples is unmasked (perhaps also ours?) Their love and faith still leave much to be desired. The readers of the gospel and also we can learn from this. There is a clear allusion to their flight and the fact that they abandoned Jesus. Between the lines, we also read the allusion that they will be gathered again after that dark hour. Have courage. I have overcome the world. This expectation resounds throughout the times.

FIRST READING   Acts 19, 1-8

When you accepted the faith, did you receive the Holy Spirit?

From the Acts of the Apostles

While Apollos was in Corinth
Paul, after his journey through the interior
came to Ephesus.
There he met some disciples
whom he asked :
“Did you receive the Holy Spirit
when you accepted the faith?
They replied :
“We have not even heard
that there is such a thing as the Holy Spirit.
Then he said :
“Then how were you baptized?”
They answered :
“With the baptism of John.”
Paul resumed :
“John administered a baptism as a sign of conversion,
but he told the people
that they should believe in Him who came after him,
that is Jesus.”
When they had heard this
they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
After Paul had laid his hands on them
the Holy Spirit came upon them;
they spoke in tongues and prophesied.
Altogether they were about twelve men.
He went to the synagogue,
where he acted boldly for three months
and through his explanations
about the Kingdom of God
tried to convince them.

INTERLUDIUM              Ps. 68(67), 2-3, 4-5ac, 6-7ab

Sing now to God, kingdoms of the earth.
or Alleluia.

When God exalts himself the enemy disperses,
where He appears, those who hate Him flee.
Like smoke that is blown away, sinners disappear,
as wax before the fire, so perish before God.

But all the righteous rejoice for joy
and stand before the face of God unconcerned.
Sing therefore to God, and glorify his name,
He is the Lord, rejoice with Him!

For orphans a father, for widows support
God is in His holy habitation.
He gives the neglected a home,
prisoners freedom, and prosperity.

ALLELUIA       John 14, 26

Alleluia.
The Holy Spirit will teach you everything
and bring to your remembrance all
which I have said unto you.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                  John 16, 29-33

Be of good cheer: I have overcome the world.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John

At that time the disciples said to Jesus :
“Look, now Thou speakest plainly and dost not use any image.
“Now we see that Thou knowest all things.
“It is not necessary for Thee to question Thee.
“We, therefore, believe that Thou hast come from God.
Jesus answered them:
“Do you believe now?
“Behold, the hour is coming, even now,
when you will be scattered on all sides and leave Me alone.
“Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with Me.
“This I have said unto you, that ye may have peace in Me.
“Though ye live in the world in tribulation,
but have courage:
I have overcome the world.”

Encyclic of

POPE FRANCIS

On Care of the Common Home
177. Given the real potential for a misuse of human abilities, individual states can no longer ignore their responsibility for planning, coordination, oversight and enforcement within their respective borders. How can a society plan and protect its future amid constantly developing technological innovations? One authoritative source of oversight and coordination is the law, which lays down rules for admissible conduct in the light of the common good. The limits which a healthy, mature, and sovereign society must impose are those related to foresight and security, regulatory norms, timely enforcement, the elimination of corruption, effective responses to undesired side-effects of production processes, and appropriate intervention where potential or uncertain risks are involved. There is a growing jurisprudence dealing with the reduction of pollution by business activities. But political and institutional frameworks do not exist simply to avoid bad practices, but also to promote best practices, to stimulate creativity in seeking new solutions, and to encourage individual or group initiatives.
