Monday – Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church

Consideration

The designation of Mary as Mother of the Church is ancient. St Augustine wrote that Mary is the Mother of the limbs of the Church because by her love she participated in the birth of the faithful in the Church. Pope Leo the Great proclaimed that the birth of the Head is also the birth of the Body. He too designated Mary as the mother of Christ, the Son of God, as well as the mother of the members of the mystical Body, namely the Church.

FIRST READING         Genesis 3, 9-15.20
I will put enmity between you and the woman,
between your offspring and hers.

From the Book of Genesis

After Adam had eaten the tree
God the Lord called the man and asked him :
“Where art thou?”
He answered :
“I heard thy thunder in the garden,
and then I became afraid because I am naked ;
therefore I hid myself.”
But God the Lord said :
“Who told you that you were naked?
“Have you eaten from the tree
which I have forbidden thee?”
Man replied :
“The woman whom Thou hast given me for a wife,
she gave me of the tree,
and then I ate.”
Thereupon God the Lord asked the woman :
“How could you have done that?”
The woman said :
“The serpent tempted me,
and then I ate.”
God the Lord then said to the serpent :
“Because thou hast done this,
you are cursed, among all the domesticated animals
and among all wild beasts!
“On thy belly shalt thou creep, and dust shalt thou eat,
all the days of your life!
“I will put enmity between you and the woman,
between thy seed and hers.
“This shall threaten thy head
and thou his heel!”

Man called his wife Eve,
for she became the mother of all living.

Interludium      Ps. 98(97), 1, 2-3ab, 3c-4

Sing to the Lord a new song
for he hath done wonders.

Sing unto the Lord a new song
because He did wonders.
His hand was strong,
the power of his holy arm.

The benefits He made known to us,
His righteousness to the nations.
Once more His goodness and faithfulness
for the house of Israel.

All the earth beheld
what our God did for us.
Glorify the Lord, all nations,
be glad, rejoice and sing.

GOSPEL             John 14, 15-17
The Spirit of truth will abide with you always.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John

In those days Jesus said to his disciples :
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
“Then at my prayer, the Father will
give you another Helper to remain with you forever :
The Spirit of Truth,
to whom the world is not receptive
because it neither sees Him nor knows Him.
“Ye know Him, for He abideth with you and shall be in you.”

Encyclic of

POPE FRANCIS

On Care of the Common Home

184. When possible risks to the environment affecting present and future public welfare appear, this situation “requires that decisions be based on a comparison between foreseeable risks and benefits for each possible alternative choice”. This is especially true, if a project may mean an increase in natural resource exploitation, emissions, and discharges, in waste generation, either a significant change in the landscape, in the habitat of protected species, or in a public space. Some projects, unsupported by accurate analysis, can deeply affect the quality of life of a place through interrelated issues such as, for example, unforeseen acoustic pollution, impairment of visibility, loss of cultural values, and the effects of the use of nuclear energy. The consumerist culture, which prefers the short-term and private interest, may promote too quick procedures or allow the withholding of information.
