CONSIDERATION
In the Psalms, there are mainly two ways of addressing God: Praise or supplication (lament). Yesterday we had a prayer of supplication, today a song of praise and these are found in the book of Jesus Ben Sirach. It is a song of praise for the glory of creation, especially its order. Almost every page of this book of wisdom illustrates the author’s versatility. He is truly steeped in Old Testament knowledge, yet the deepest of all wisdom is “God, the same from eternity”.

FIRST READING   Sir. 42, 15-25

Of God’s glory is his work fulfilled.

From the Book of Ecclesiasticus

Let me now remember the works of the Lord
and record what I have seen :
By the words of the Lord his works exist,
(they accomplish His will as He has ordained).
The sun looks down on all things brightly,
and the glory of God fills his work.
Even to the saints, the Lord has not given the ability
to recount His wondrous works :
All that He has established in His omnipotence
exist for His glory.
He searches the abyss and the heart,
and their craftiness He penetrates,
for the Highest hath all knowledge
and he seeth the signs of the times.
He reveals the past and the future,
and reveals what is hidden;
no thought escapes his sight;
no word remains hidden from Him.
The great works of his wisdom hath He created with the order
for He is before the ages, and abideth forever;
He grows not greater nor lesser
and he needs no one for counsel.
How glorious are all his works
though we see but a spark of them.
All these things live and remain forever,
they obey Him at all times.
Everything differs, one complements the other,
and nothing is created that is imperfect.
The one confirms the good of the other
and who is ever satisfied at the sight of that glory?

INTERLUDIUM     Ps. 33(32), 2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9

The Lord has made the heavens by his word.

Therefore honor the Lord with the play of the harp,
and play for him the harp.
Sing unto the Lord a new song,
a fair and shining chorus.

For the word of the Lord is true
and all that He doeth is trustworthy.
He loves justice and righteousness,
the earth is full of his kindness.

He made the heavens by His word,
His voice created the heavenly powers.
As in a bag of water, He maketh the sea
the streams in rainbows.

All the earth shall fear the Lord
and all its inhabitants shall fear Him.
He spoke but a word and all things came into being,
He gave His command and it came to pass.

ALLELUIA Ps. 111(110), 8ab

Alleluia.
The work of the Lord is good and trustworthy,
all that He hath decreed is immovable.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL   Mk 10, 46-52

Rabbi, make me see!

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark

At that time Jesus,
accompanied by his disciples and a large crowd,
was leaving Jericho,
there sat a blind beggar by the roadside,
Bartimeus, son of Timeus.
As soon as he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene
he began to cry out loud:
“Jesus, Son of David,
have mercy on me!”
Many snarled at him to be silent,
but he shouted even louder:
“Son of David, have pity on me!”
Jesus remained standing and said :
“Call him here.”
They called out to the blind man :
“Have good courage!
Get up, He is calling you.”
He threw off his cloak, jumped up, and came to Jesus.
Jesus asked him :
“What do you want me to do for you?”
The blind man answered Him :
“Rabbi, make me see!”
And Jesus said to him :
“Go, your faith has healed you.”
Immediately he could see
and he joined Him on his journey.

This does not mean being opposed to any technological innovations which can bring about an improvement in the quality of life. But it does mean that profit cannot be the sole criterion to be taken into account, and that, when significant new information comes to light, a reassessment should be made, with the involvement of all interested parties. The outcome may be a decision not to proceed with a given project, to modify it, or to consider alternative proposals.
