Consideration
In chapter 44 of Jesus of Sirach, a long poem of praise begins about the ancient fathers: (Henach, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, Samuel, Nathan, David, Solomon, Elijah, Elisha, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel etc). It is a piece of history of Israel. We read only a small part of the introduction and curiously, the praise of those who are no longer known, but have been forgotten, yet had a role in Israel’s history: How many people we have known do not belong to this category? (the indispensable anonyms).

FIRST READING      Sir. 44, 1. 9-13

Our fathers were pious men ;
for ever and ever their posterity remain.

From the Book of Ecclesiasticus

Let us praise famous men,
the fathers from whom we are descended.
Yet there are others who are no longer thought of
and who have disappeared, as if they had never existed,
as if they had never been,
like their children.
The first, however, were pious men :
Their righteous deeds were not forgotten ;
with their posterity their name remains :
Their offspring are a good heritage.
Their posterity hold fast to God’s covenant,
and also their children thanks to them.
For ever and ever they shall stand,
and their fame shall never be effaced.

INTERLUDIUM Ps. 149, 1-2, 3-4, 5-6a, 9b

Our Lord, who loves his people,
crowns the afflicted with victorious wreaths.
or : Alleluia.

Sing to the Lord a new song,
His praise resoundeth in the midst of his people.
Israel shall rejoice with his Creator,
let Zion’s sons hail their king.

Praise his Name in a holy dance,
play harp and zither before Him.
For our Lord, who loves his people,
crowns the afflicted with victorious wreaths.

So rejoice, ye saints, at your triumph,
celebrate in your army places;
Go with the song of God in your mouths,
a task that honours his pious ones.

ALLELUIA         Ps. 119(118), 18

Alleluia.
Open my eyes to behold, O Lord,
the glory of your law.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL    Mk. 11, 11-25

My house will be called a house of prayer
for all peoples.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark

It was then that Jesus entered Jerusalem, went into the Temple.
After having considered everything there,
He returned with the twelve to Bethany.
The next day, when they had left Betania, He became hungry.
He saw in the distance a fig tree in leaf
and went to see if he could find anything on it;
but when He came to the tree, He found nothing but leaves;
and it was not the time of figs.
So He turned to the tree and said :
“No one will eat fruit from you in eternity!”
His disciples heard this.
When they came to Jerusalem, he went to the temple
and began chasing the buyers and sellers out of the temple square;
He overturned the tables of the money changers and the chairs of the pigeon sellers.
Nor did He tolerate anyone else to carry any object across the temple precincts.
And He gave them an explanation:
“Is it not written :
My house
shall be called a house of prayer for all nations?
“But ye have made it a den of robbers.”
The high priests and the scribes who heard this
sought an opportunity to put Him to death.
For they feared Him
because all the people were enraptured with his teaching.
In the evening they left the city.

In the morning they passed by the fig tree
and they saw it withered away to the root.
Peter remembered what had happened and said :
“Master, look!
“The fig tree which You have cursed is withered away.
Jesus answered them :
“Have faith in God.
“Verily, I say unto you :
“If anyone says to this mountain, ‘Lift up yourselves and plunge into the sea,
and if he does not doubt in his heart
but believes that what he says will come to pass,
for him it will come to pass.
“Therefore I say to you :
“Everything that you ask in prayer,
believe that you have already received it
and you will get it.

“If you have anything against anyone while you are praying,
then forgive, that your Father in heaven may also
may forgive your faults.”

Encyclic of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On the Care of the Common Home

188. There are certain environmental issues where it is not easy to achieve a broad consensus. Here I would state once more that the Church does not presume to settle scientific questions or to replace politics. But I am concerned to encourage an honest and open debate so that particular interests or ideologies will not prejudice the common good.
