Great saintly theologian
Born in 306 in Visibis (Turkey)

Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with you the joy of the Gospel.
Everyone, no one except,
can experience this joy by opening his heart to the healing effect of God’s word.

Available every day

Consideration
The return of the son Tobias is one of the most beautiful parts of the book of Tobit. Every day the mother looks forward to her son. The rather antipathetic Anna has very nice features here. She is all eyes and attention for her son. She weeps for joy. The old Tobit is sharply portrayed, groping his way around. Dogs are not normally seen in a favourable light in writing. They are not pets and the word ‘dog’ is a swear word.

FIRST READING   Tob. 11, 5-17

Thou hast afflicted me, O Lord,
but again thou givest me grace.

From the Book of Tobit

In those days, every day, Anna, the wife of Tobit, sat by the road
on the top of a mountain,
from where she had a wide view.
And when she sat in the same place, looking forward to the coming of her son Tobias,
she saw him coming from afar.
She recognized him at once,
and she hastened to tell Toby the news and cried out:
“Here comes your son!
Meanwhile, Raphael said to Tobias:
“When thou comest into thy house,
worship the Lord thy God immediately,
and give Him thanks.
“Then go to thy father and kiss him.
“At once rub his eyes with the gall of the fish,
which thou hast with thee: For thou mayest be sure
that his eyes will open at once,
so that thy father may see the light of heaven
and rejoice at thy sight.”
In the meantime, the dog, which had accompanied them on their way, ran ahead of them,
and as a herald of the joyful news
he wagged his tail happily.
Then the blind father got up
and gropingly he sought his way ;
he stretched out his hands toward his child
and walked towards his son.
He embraced him and kissed him; his wife did likewise, and both of them wept for joy.
When they had worshipped and thanked God,
they sat down.
Tobias took some of the gall of the fish
and stroked it in his father’s eyes.
And after waiting about half an hour
the white spot, like the skin of an egg,
started to come out of the eyes.
Tobias took hold of it and pulled it from his father’s eyes.
At the same time, he regained his sight.
Then they glorified God:
Tobit and Anna, and all who knew them.
And Tobit said :
“Blessed art thou, God,
and blessed be thy holy name forever and ever,
and blessed are all thy holy angels.
“Thou hast chastened me,
but Thou hast shown me grace again,
as I behold my son Tobias.”

INTERLUDIUM      Ps. 146(145), 2abc, 7, 8-9a, 9bc-10

The Lord I will praise all my life.
or: Alleluia.

The Lord will I praise all my life,
my God will I sing all my days.

The Lord always keeps his word,
the Lord gives justice to the oppressed.
The Lord gives bread to the hungry,
He gives freedom to captives.

The Lord opens the eyes of the blind,
He raises up those who are broken.
The Lord loves the righteous,
the Lord preserves the displaced.

The Lord gives succor to the orphan and the widow
but lets sinners go astray.
The Lord is King forever,
your God, Zion, reigns over all generations.

ALLELUIA Ps. 119(118), 135

Alleluia.
Let your face shine before your servant, Lord,
let me see your judgments.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL   Mk 12, 35-37

How can the scribes say
the Messiah is the Son of David?

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark

In his teaching in the temple, Jesus once raised the question :
“How can the scribes say that the Messiah is the Son of David?
“David himself said, moved by the Holy Spirit:
The Lord has spoken to my Lord :
Sit at my right hand
until I have put your enemies under your feet.
“If David himself calls Him Lord,
how can He be His son?”

The majority of the people gladly listened to Him.

Encyclic of

POPE FRANCIS

On Care of the Common Home
195. The principle of the maximization of profits, frequently isolated from other considerations, reflects a misunderstanding of the very concept of the economy. As long as production is increased, little concern is given to whether it is at the cost of future resources or the health of the environment; as long as the clearing of a forest increases production, no one calculates the losses entailed in the desertification of the land, the harm done to biodiversity or the increased pollution. In a word, businesses profit by calculating and paying only a fraction of the costs involved. Yet only when “the economic and social costs of using up shared environmental resources are recognized with transparency and fully borne by those who incur them, not by other peoples or future generations”, can those actions be considered ethical. An instrumental way of reasoning, which provides a purely static analysis of realities in the service of present needs, is at work whether resources are allocated by the market or by state central planning.
