CONSIDERATION
Colossae is a Church founded not by Paul, but by Epaphras, a fellow believer. The reason why Paul writes to a church unknown to him is because of reports reaching him about a fallacy that was gaining ground in Colosse and its surroundings. That a crucified man of flesh and blood could grant union with God was unthinkable. Paul immediately puts his finger on the wound at the beginning of the letter: Twice he addresses his readers as ‘brothers in Christ’. It is the title of address with which the first Christians greeted each other. This is not about human solidarity based on family ties, environment, nationality or shared history: It is about the family of all those who live their human relationships from a believing perspective. Again: From faith in, hope of and love for the Lord. What is the state of our Christian family?
FIRST READING Col 1:1-8
The word of truth has come to you
and is bearing fruit in all the world.
Epistle of the Apostle Paul to the Christians of Colossae
From Paul,
by the will of God apostle to Christ Jesus,
and of our brother Timothy,
to the church at Colossae,
our brothers in the faith and in Christ.
Grace to you and peace from God our Father!
We give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
whenever we remember you in our prayers.
For we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus
and of the love which thou hast towards all the saints,
because thou art animated by the hope
of what is reserved for you in heaven.
Ye first heard of it
when the Gospel, the word of truth, came unto you.
In all the world
it is bearing fruit and flourishing, by the way,
as it has been with you since the day you heard of God’s grace
and acknowledged it in truth.
Thus did you learn it from Epaphras, our dear associate
who is to you a trusted servant of Christ.
From him we have learned
what love the Spirit has awakened in you.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 52(51), 10, 11
I trust in God’s goodness for ever.
I stand in God’s house like a green olive tree,
trusting in his goodness for ever.
Thee, Lord, will I always thank,
for thou hast done all these things.
Thy name I will praise before all thy faithful,
because Thou art good.
ALLELUIA Ps. 119(118), 27
Alleluia.
Lead me in the way of your commandments, Lord,
and I will remember your deeds.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk. 4, 38-44
I must bring the Good News to other cities, too,
for this I have been sent.
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke
At that time, Jesus left the synagogue at Capernaum
and entered into the house of Simon.
Because Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever,
they called for his help.
He came and stood at the head of her bed
and gave a severe command to the fever.
She was freed from it
and immediately she got up and served them.
At sunset all brought their sick to Him;
those sick were suffering from many maladies.
He healed them by laying His hands on them one by one.
Out of many also went devils, who shouted :
“Thou art the Son of God.”
He gave a stern command and did not allow them to speak,
for they knew that he was the Messiah.
When daybreak came, he went out
and went into a lonely place.
But the people sought Him,
came to where he was
and tried to hold him fast
to prevent Him from leaving them.
But He said to them :
“I must bring the Good News of the Kingdom of God to other cities also,
for this I have been sent.
And He preached in the synagogues of the Jewish Land.

On Care of the Common Home
37. Some countries have made significant progress in establishing sanctuaries on land and in the oceans where any human intervention is prohibited which might modify their features or alter their original structures. In the protection of biodiversity, specialists insist on the need for particular attention to be shown to areas richer both in the number of species and in endemic, rare or less protected species. Certain places need greater protection because of their immense importance for the global ecosystem, or because they represent important water reserves and thus safeguard other forms of life.
