CONSIDERATION

We are struck by the richness of this letter: Spiritual insight; living a worthy life; pleasing the Lord in everything. The end of this reading (12-14) even resembles a short profession of faith, formulated in figurative language: Darkness and light, deliverance, and forgiveness are among the characteristics of the power that God gives to support Christians in the trials they undergo. He has taken us out of the domain of darkness and into the kingdom of his beloved Son: In him, our deliverance is assured and our sins are forgiven.

FIRST READING     Col 1:9-14

God has taken us out of the domain of darkness
and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son.

From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of Colossae

Brothers and sisters,

From the moment we heard
what love the Spirit has awakened in you,
we have not ceased to pray for you.
We beseech God to give you all wisdom and spiritual understanding,
so that you may fully understand His will
and live a life worthy of the Lord
and pleasing to Him in all things.
May you bring forth fruits
of active goodness in every field
and also increase the true knowledge of God.
May He mightily strengthen you in His glorious power
to endure all things and to endure everything
and at the same time thank the Father joyfully,
because He has enabled you
to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light.
He has snatched us from the domain of darkness
and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son.
In Him, our deliverance is assured
and our sins are forgiven.

INTERLUDIUM  Ps. 98(97), 2-3ab, 3cd-4, 5-6

His benefits the Lord has made known to us.

His benefits have been known to us by the Lord,
the nations his righteousness.
Once more his goodness and faithfulness
in favor of the House of Israel.

All the earth beheld
what our God did for us.
Glorify the Lord, all nations,
be glad, rejoice and sing.

Sing to the Lord with the zither,
with the zither and the psaltery.
Let the trumpet and the trombone sound
and dance to the Lord thy King.

ALLELUIA      Ps. 119(118), 34

Alleluia.
Give me the understanding to keep your law, Lord,
To follow it with all my heart.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL       Lk. 5, 1-11

They left everything to follow Him.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Luke

On a certain day
Jesus stood on the shore of the Lake of Gennesaret,
while the people were pressing Him
to hear the word of God.
Now He saw two boats lying on the shore of the lake;
the fishermen had gone out and were washing their nets.
He stepped into one of the boats, Simon’s,
and asked him to go ashore a little.
He sat down and from the boat, He continued to teach the people.
When He had finished speaking He said to Simon:
“Now sail to the deep
and cast your nets for the catch.”
Simon replied:
“Master!
all night we toiled without catching anything;
but at your word, I will cast out the nets.”
They did so and caught such a multitude of fish in their nets
that they threatened to break.
So they beckoned to their mates in the other boat
to come and help them.
When they came
they filled both boats to the brim.
When Simon Peter saw this, he fell on his feet and said:
“Lord, go away from me,
for I am a sinful man.”
Horror had seized him
and all who were with him,
because of the catch they had made.
So it was with James and John, the sons of Zebedee,
who were working with Simon.
Jesus, however, spoke to Simon:
“Do not be afraid,
henceforth you will catch people.”
They brought the boats ashore
and left everything behind to follow Him.

On Care of the Common Home

38. Let us mention, for example, those richly biodiverse lungs of our planet which are the Amazon and the Congo basins, or the great aquifers and glaciers. We know how important these are for the entire earth and for the future of humanity. The ecosystems of tropical forests possess an enormously complex biodiversity that is almost impossible to appreciate fully, yet when these forests are burned down or leveled for purposes of cultivation, within the space of a few years countless species are lost and the areas frequently become arid wastelands. A delicate balance has to be maintained when speaking about these places, for we cannot overlook the huge global economic interests which, under the guise of protecting them, can undermine the sovereignty of individual nations. In fact, there are “proposals to internationalize the Amazon, which only serve the economic interests of transnational corporations”.[24] We cannot fail to praise the commitment of international agencies and civil society organizations which draw public attention to these issues and offer critical cooperation, employing legitimate means of pressure, to ensure that each government carries out its proper and inalienable responsibility to preserve its country’s environment and natural resources, without capitulating to spurious local or international interests.
