Consideration
Once we were estranged from God, but now that we have been reconciled to Him in Christ, we must live differently. We might assume that it is up to us to approach God, that He expects us to make a sacrifice to make up for what once went wrong between Him and us. The New Testament, however, shows how different our God is. It is He who comes to us, and it is He who gives us His Son on the cross, the sacrifice that is offered to us. It is the thread that runs through the gospels: God is the total Other. He seeks mankind. Do we let ourselves be found?
FIRST READING Col 1:21-23
Now God has reconciled you to himself;
He wants you to be like holy men,
He wants you to appear before him as holy men, without blemish or blame.
From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of
Colossians
Brothers and sisters,
Ye also were formerly alienated from God
and were hostile to Him
and your deeds were evil.
But now God has reconciled you to himself
in Christ’s mortal body
Through His death,
for He wants you to be like holy men,
appear before Him as holy men, without blemish or blame.
But then you must also remain firm and immovable in the faith
and let not yourselves be distracted from the hope
which is promised you in the Gospel.
This is the message
which has been preached to all creatures under heaven
and of which I, Paul, have become the minister.

Why do you do what you are not allowed to do on the Sabbath?
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke
One day, Jesus was walking through the cornfields on the Sabbath,
and to eat, his disciples picked ears of corn
which they rubbed out with their hands.
Some of the Pharisees asked :
“Why are you doing something that is not allowed on the Sabbath?”
Jesus answered them:
“Have you not read what David did
when he and his companions were hungry?
“How he entered the house of God,
took the showbread and ate it
and gave some of it to his companions,
when only the priests may eat thereof?”
And He added :
“The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

40. Oceans not only contain the bulk of our planet’s water supply but also most of the immense variety of living creatures, many of them still unknown to us and threatened for various reasons. What is more, marine life in rivers, lakes, seas, and oceans, which feed a great part of the world’s population, is affected by uncontrolled fishing, leading to a drastic depletion of certain species. Selective forms of fishing which discard much of what they collect continue unabated. Particularly threatened are marine organisms that we tend to overlook, like some forms of plankton; they represent a significant element in the ocean food chain, and species used for our food ultimately depend on them.
