The basilica is one of Rome’s seven pilgrimage churches and the oldest and,
in ecclesiastical rank, principal of Rome’s four papal basilicas.

Opening words
Today we celebrate the foundation
of the Basilica of St. John of Lateran.
Just as the Temple in Jerusalem was for the Jews
a sign of unity,
the bishop’s seat of Rome is for us.
For the successor of Peter watches over
the unity of the Church in all her diversity
and founded in Christ and his Gospel.
In this way she can bear rich fruit
all over the world.
In joy and sorrow, in fear or with elated plans:
Christians celebrate around their Lord Jesus.
To Him goes their first attention.
FIRST READING Ez. 47, 1-2.8-9.12
I saw the water flowing out of the temple.
From the Prophet Ezekiel
In those days
an angel brought me
to the entrance of the temple of the Lord.
And there I saw under the threshold
water rising up and flowing in an easterly direction ;
for the front of the temple faces east.
The water first flowed southward
along the wall
and then along the south side of the altar.
He led me out through the north gate
to the eastern outer gate
and to the right of it the water came again.
And the angel said :
“This water flows
through the eastern part of the land
to the Araba,
flows into the Salt Sea
and makes the waters of the sea healthy.
The river brings life
wherever it flows;
it is teeming with animals.
The sea is full of fish,
for the river that flows into it
makes the water healthy.
Wherever it flows, there is life.
On both banks of the river
all kinds of fruit trees grow;
their leaves never wither
and they are never without fruit.
Every month they bear fruit,
because the water that feeds them
comes from the sanctuary.
The fruits are edible
and the leaves have healing power.”
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 46(45), 2-3, 5-6, 8-9
A babbling brook refreshes God’s city,
the holy abode of the Most High.
The Lord is for us a fortress and a refuge,
a mighty help in trouble.
Thus we are not afraid, though the earth may crumble,
though the mountains fall into the sea.
A babbling brook refreshes God’s city,
the holy habitation of the Most High.
That city stands firm because God is within it,
God stands at its side as the day dawns.
The Lord of the heavenly armies is with us,
for our God of Jacob’s is a safe fortress.
Come near and see what the Lord has done,
His wondrous works on earth.
SECOND READING I Cor. 3, 9b-11.16-17
You are the temple of God.
From the first letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of Corinth
Brothers and Sisters,
You are the building of God.
According to the grace given me, I, as a skilful master builder,
have laid the foundation on which another will build.
But let everyone see how he builds upon it.
For no one can lay another foundation
except what is already there, namely, Jesus Christ.
Ye know that ye are the temple of God
and that the Spirit of God dwells in you.
If anyone destroys the temple of God
God will destroy him.
For the temple of God is holy
and that temple is you.
ALLELUIA 2 Chron. 7, 16
Alleluia.
Thus speaks the Lord:
I have chosen this temple
and sanctified,
that my name
will dwell in it forever.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL John 2, 13-22
He spoke of the temple of his body.
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John
When the Passover of the Jews was near
Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
In the temple He found the vendors
of cattle, sheep, and doves
and also the moneychangers who were sitting there.
He made a scourge out of ropes,
He drove them all out of the temple,
even the sheep and the cattle;
He swept the changelings’ change from the tables
and he overthrew them.
And to the pigeon-traders He said:
“Get rid of all this!
“Don’t make my Father’s house a marketplace!
His disciples remembered that it is written :
The zeal for your house will consume me.
The Jews turned to Him with the words :
“What sign canst thou show us that thou mayest do this?
To which Jesus answered them :
“Tear down this temple
and in three days I will raise it up again.
But the Jews remarked :
“Forty-six years this temple has been built ;
but Jesus answered them, “Break down this temple and I will resurrect it in three days.
Jesus, however, spoke of the temple of His body.
So when He rose from the dead
His disciples remembered that He had said this,
and they believed the scripture
and in the word that Jesus had spoken.

THE HUMAN ROOTS OF THE ECOLOGICAL CRISIS
101. It would hardly be helpful to describe symptoms without acknowledging the human origins of the ecological crisis. A certain way of understanding human life and activity has gone awry, to the serious detriment of the world around us. Should we not pause and consider this? At this stage, I propose that we focus on the dominant technocratic paradigm and the place of human beings and of human action in the world.
