CONSIDERATION
The word that Paul proclaims was not given to him by men. It is a word from God, and Paul testifies to it because God has called him to it. His task is not inextricably linked to one particular community – the Christian community of Rome was not founded by Paul, but by Peter. The vocation that Paul experiences extends to all communities of faith, and will allow the young Church, which is gradually beginning to expand, to fulfil the mission that Jesus gave her: To proclaim the Gospel from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth.

FIRST READING     Rom 15:14-21

God has destined me for the holy service of Christ Jesus,
to offer Him to the nations as a welcome gift.

From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of Rome
Brothers and sisters,

I have no doubt for my part
that you are quite capable of advising one another,
for you are abundantly endowed with goodness
and knowledge of all kinds.
Nevertheless, I have
written to you here and there with a certain boldness
to remind you of some things,
by the grace given to me by God.
He has destined me
for the holy service of Christ Jesus among the Gentiles,
to minister the gospel of God,
to offer Him to the nations as a welcome gift,
sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
For this I may boast with God in Christ Jesus.
For I cannot speak of anything else
but of that which Christ hath wrought through me
for the conversion of the Gentiles,
through word and work,
by mighty miracles,
in the power of the Spirit.
Thus have I finished the preaching of the gospel of Christ,
from Jerusalem and its environs to the coast of Dalmatia.
Only it was a matter of honour for me not to preach it anywhere
where the name of Christ had already been mentioned.
I do not want to build on a foundation laid by others,
but hold fast to the word of the Scriptures:
“They shall behold
who have not heard of Him.
They shall come to know
who have not yet heard of Him.”

INTERLUDIUM     Ps. 98(97), 1, 2-3ab, 3cd-4

His benefits the Lord has made known to us,
the nations his righteousness.

Sing to the Lord a new song
for He hath done wonders.
His hand was mighty,
the power of his holy arm.

His benefits He made known to us,
His righteousness to the nations.
Once more His goodness and faithfulness
for the house of Israel.

All the earth beheld
what our God did for us.
Glorify the Lord, all nations,
be glad, rejoice and sing.

ALLELUIA    John 14,23

Alleluia.
If anyone loves me,
he will keep my word;
my Father will love him
and We will come to him.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL     Lk 16, 1-8

The children of this world act among themselves with more deliberation
than the children of light.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke

In those days Jesus spoke to his disciples:
“There was once a rich man who had a steward,
who was accused of squandering his property.
So he called him and asked:
What do I hear from you there?
Give an account of thy stewardship,
for thou canst no longer be a steward.
Then the steward thought to himself:
What shall I do now that my lord has taken the stewardship from me?
I cannot dig, and beg: I am ashamed of it.
I already know what I will do,
so that after my resignation as steward, I can find shelter.
He summoned the debtors of his lord, one by one,
and said to the first:
How much do you owe my master?
He replied, “One hundred barrels of oil.
But he said:
Here is your confession;
sit down quickly and write: Fifty.
Then he asked another:
And how much do you owe?
This one answered, A hundred measures of wheat.
He said to him:
Here is your confession; write eighty.
The lord praised the unjust steward for being prudent.
That he had acted with deliberation,
for the children of this world
act among themselves with more deliberation
than the children of light.”

TECHNOLOGY: CREATIVITY AND POWER

102. Humanity has entered a new era in which our technical prowess has brought us to a crossroads. We are the beneficiaries of two centuries of enormous waves of change: steam engines, railways, the telegraph, electricity, automobiles, aeroplanes, chemical industries, modern medicine, information technology and, more recently, the digital revolution, robotics, biotechnologies and nanotechnologies. It is right to rejoice in these advances and to be excited by the immense possibilities which they continue to open up before us, for “science and technology are wonderful products of a God-given human creativity”. The modification of nature for useful purposes has distinguished the human family from the beginning; technology itself “expresses the inner tension that impels man gradually to overcome material limitations”. Technology has remedied countless evils which used to harm and limit human beings. How can we not feel gratitude and appreciation for this progress, especially in the fields of medicine, engineering and communications? How could we not acknowledge the work of many scientists and engineers who have provided alternatives to make development sustainable?
