CONSIDERATION

The enumeration of all the names at the end of Paul’s letter is of great importance. Paul had never been to Rome, but the list shows that he has many friends there. In their house, Prisca and Aquila receive the Christians to celebrate the Eucharist. It was said of those first Christians: “Look how they love each other! Can we tell from our attitude, from our lifestyle, how we love each other? How can we, in small things, little by little, reflect the simplicity and sobriety of that daily shared life of faith?

FIRST READING     Rom 16:3-9. 16. 22-27

Greet one another with a holy kiss.

From the Letter of the Apostle Paul to the Christians of Rome

Brothers and Sisters,

Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus
who risked their lives for me ;
not only I am indebted to them
but also all the Gentile congregations.
Greetings also to the congregation at their homes.
Greetings to my beloved Epénetus, Asia’s firstling before Christ.
Greetings to Mary, who gave herself so much for you.
Greetings Androníkus and Junias,
my countrymen and fellow prisoners,
men of distinction among the apostles,
who were Christians before me.
Greetings to Ampliatus, my dear friend in the Lord.
Greetings to Urban, our co-worker in the cause of Christ
and my beloved Stachys.
Greet one another with a holy kiss.
All the churches of Christ salute you.

I, Tertius, who have recorded this letter, greet you in the Lord.
Gajus, host of me and of the whole Christian congregation,
Erastus, the administrator of the city finances
and our brother Quartus send you greetings.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen!

To Him who is able to confirm you
in the Gospel of Jesus Christ which I proclaim
– according to the revelation of the secret
that was concealed for centuries
but has now been revealed,
and by the command of the eternal God
by means of prophetic writings
to all the heathen nations
in order to bring them to the obedience of faith –
To Him, the One Wise God, be the glory through Jesus Christ in the ages of ages!

INTERLUDIUM    Ps. 145(144), 2-3, 4-5, 10-11

I will praise you, my God and King,
Glorifying your name forever.

I will praise you every day,
Glorifying your name forever.
The Lord is great and worthy of all praise,
His greatness is unfathomable.

Your deeds are told from generation to generation,
Your power is proclaimed everywhere.
People speak of your splendour and majesty,
spread the fame of thy wondrous deeds.

Thy works shall praise thee, O Lord,
thy pious ones shall praise thee.
They shall praise the glory of thy society,
thy power they proclaim.

ALLELUIA      John 15, 15b

Alleluia.
I have called you friends, says the Lord,
for I have told you all
that I have heard from the Father.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL      Lk. 16, 9-15

If you have not been faithful
in the unrighteous mammon,
who will trust you with true good?

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke

In those days Jesus said to his disciples :
“Make friends with unrighteous mammon,
so that when it comes to your loss they may
receive you into the eternal tents.
“He who is reliable in the smallest matter
is also trustworthy in the great;
and he that is unjust in the smallest
shall be unjust in the greatest.
“Therefore have ye not been faithful
in the unrighteous mammon,
who will trust you with true good?
“If thou hast not been faithful
in the management of another’s good,
who will give you what you can call your own?
“No servant can serve two masters,
for he will hate the one and love the other,
or adore the one and despise the other.
“Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”
The Pharisees, greedy for money as they were, heard all this
and they laughed at Him.
He spoke to them :
“In the sight of men you pretend to be righteous,
but God knows your heart.
“What men look up to is an abomination in the sight of God.”

Laudato Si

Encyclic of

POPE FRANCIS

On the Care of the Common Home

103. Technoscience, when well directed, can produce important means of improving the quality of human life, from useful domestic appliances to great transportation systems, bridges, buildings and public spaces. It can also produce art and enable men and women immersed in the material world to “leap” into the world of beauty. Who can deny the beauty of an aircraft or a skyscraper? Valuable works of art and music now make use of new technologies. So, in the beauty intended by the one who uses new technical instruments and in the contemplation of such beauty, a quantum leap occurs, resulting in a fulfilment which is uniquely human.
