CONSIDERATION
In fact, in this reading, the rupture of the kingdom of David is being prepared theologically. In truth, these misdeeds of Solomon did not just occur at the end of his life, but were present from the beginning. However, the bursting of this mighty and glorious kingdom confronts the believing Jew with the inescapable question of the cause of it all. The believing answer cannot be other than unfaithfulness to the Covenant. There are also historical causes and the Bible (1 K 12) is well aware of this.
FIRST READING I Kings 11, 4-13
Because ye keep not my covenant,
I will tear the kingdom from thee,
I will leave one tribe to thy son for David’s sake.
From the First Book of Kings
In his old age the women tempted Solomon
to serve other gods ;
He was no longer
his God with heart and soul
as his father David.
Solomon worshipped Astoret, the goddess of the Sidonians,
and Milkom, the abomination of the Ammonites ;
he did that which displeased the Lord
and served Him not as faithfully as his father David.
So Solomon had a sacrificial tower built in the mountain east of Jerusalem
for Kemos, the abomination of Moab,
and to Molek, the abomination of the Ammonites.
And he did the same for all his foreign wives
who would burn incense and offer sacrifices to their gods.
Then the Lord, the God of Israel, was wroth with Solomon,
because he had turned away from Him,
after He had appeared to him twice.
The Lord had expressly forbidden him to worship other gods,
but Solomon had not obeyed the Lord’s prohibition.
Therefore the Lord said to him :
“Because it is so with you
and ye keep not my covenant
or the laws which I have laid upon you,
I will tear the kingdom from you
and give it to one of your servants.
“But for the sake of your father David
I will not do this during your lifetime;
I will tear it from the hand of your son.
“Yet I will not tear loose the whole kingdom :
I will leave one tribe to your son,
for the sake of David my servant,
and of Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen.”
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 106(105), 3-4, 35-36, 37, 40
Remember me, O Lord, who art in favour of thy people.
Happy are those who follow the precepts of the Lord,
behaving well at all times.
Do not forget me, O Lord, who is well disposed towards your people,
and come to me with your help.
Thy people mingled among the heathen
and adopted their evil ways.
They bowed the knee to their idols,
which became a snare to them.
Their own sons they sacrificed,
their daughters to demons.
Therefore the Lord was wroth against his people
and was disgusted with his inheritance.
ALLELUIA Ps. 119(118), 105
Alleluia.
Your word is a lamp to my feet, Lord,
it is a light in my path.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mk 7, 24-30
The dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark
At that time
Jesus went to the region of Tyre and Sidon.
He entered a house there
and did not want anyone to know,
but He could not remain unnoticed.
A woman
whose little daughter was possessed by an unclean spirit,
came as soon as she heard of him and threw herself at his feet.
The woman was a Hellenic of Syrophoenician descent.
She asked Him to cast out the devil from her daughter.
Jesus spoke to her:
“First let the children be sated.
For it is not good to give the bread to the dogs that is for the children.
But she had an answer and said to Him :
“Yea, Lord.
The dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.
Then He spoke to her :
“Because thou sayest this,
Go,
the devil has left thy daughter.”
She returned home,
found her child in bed
and found that the devil had gone.

On Care of the Common Home
191. Whenever these questions are raised, some react by accusing others of irrationally attempting to stand in the way of progress and human development. But we need to grow in the conviction that a decrease in the pace of production and consumption can at times give rise to another form of progress and development. Efforts to promote a sustainable use of natural resources are not a waste of money, but rather an investment capable of providing other economic benefits in the medium term. If we look at the larger picture, we can see that more diversified and innovative forms of production which impact less on the environment can prove very profitable. It is a matter of openness to different possibilities which do not involve stifling human creativity and its ideals of progress, but rather directing that energy along new channels.
