Invitation
May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Consideration
In the beginning, God entrusted creation to man.
Yet in that wonderful creation, man experiences a lack.
That is why God gives him a fellow human being:
someone with whom he can perfectly share life.
For Jesus, this union between man and woman is sacred.
The fidelity of people to each other is so much more
so much more precious than all the precepts about divorce.
In this Eucharist, let us celebrate
– the sign of God’s covenant with all people –
deepen and renew our yes and our fidelity.
FIRST READING Gen 2:18-24
And they shall become perfectly one.
From the book of Genesis
The Lord God spoke:
‘It is not good that man should remain alone.
‘I am going to make a helper for him to suit him.’
Then the Lord God modelled out of the earth
all the animals of the land and all the birds of the air
and brought them to man to see what he would call them:
as man would call them, so they would be called.
So man gave names to all the tame animals
and to all the birds of the air and to all the wild beasts;
but man did not find a help that suited him.
Then the Lord God caused man to fall into a deep sleep;
and while he slept, He took away one of his ribs
and put meat in its place.
Then the Lord God formed
out of the rib that He had taken away from man,
a woman
and brought her to man.
Then man spoke:
‘Finally bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh!
‘Mannin she shall be called
For from a man she has come.’
Thus it is that a man leaves his father and mother
and so attaches himself to his wife that they become completely one.

SECOND READING Hebrews 2:9-11
He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified have one and the same origin.
From the letter to the Hebrews
Brothers and sisters,
We see how Jesus
who for a short time had been put below the angels,
is now crowned with glory and honour
because He endured death.
By God’s grace, His dying came to benefit all.
God,
ultimate goal and origin of all things,
wants to lead many children to heavenly glory;
was it not then fitting
that He the captain who saves them,
not but by suffering brought to completion ?
For He who sanctifies
and those who are sanctified have one and the same origin;
Therefore He does not shrink from making
calling them His brothers and sisters.

God lives in us
and his love has become perfect in us.

In those days, Pharisees came and asked Jesus:
‘Is a man free to disown his wife?’
By this they wanted to put Him to the test.
Jesus answered them with a counter-question:
‘What has Moses prescribed for you?’
They said:
‘Moses has allowed a letter of divorce to be drawn up
and to send her away.’
Yet Jesus answered them:
‘Because of the hardness of your heart
he has written down that provision for you.
‘But in the beginning, at creation,
God made them as man and woman.
‘Therefore the man will leave his father and mother
to be bound to his wife
and these two shall become one flesh.
‘So they are no longer two,
one flesh as they have become.
‘What therefore God has joined together ,
shall not separate a man.’
At home, the disciples questioned Him about this again.
He spoke to them:
‘Whoever sends away his wife and marries another ,
is guilty before her of adultery.
‘And when she leaves her husband and marries another ,
she commits adultery.’
People brought children to Him
with the intention that He would touch them.
But grimly the disciples rejected them.
When Jesus saw this, He said indignantly:
‘Let the children come to Me anyway
and do not stop them.
‘For to those who are like them belongs the kingdom of God.
‘Verily, I say to you:
Whoever does not accept the Kingdom of God as a child ,
shall certainly not enter it.’
Thereupon He embraced them and blessed them
As He laid hands on them.

58. The book of Job takes the fact that we have the same Creator as the
basis for some common rights: ‘Did not he who
formed me in the mother’s womb, made him also? Was it not one and
same who gave us life in the mother’s womb?’ (31, 15). Many centuries
later, Saint Ireneus expressed himself in a different way with the image
of melody: ‘He who loves the truth, therefore, must not let himself be
carried away by the difference of every sound or imagine that one
is the maker and creator of this sound and another the maker and
creator of another […], but he must think that only one alone made these’.
