Consideration
It is not the apostles but God himself who calls Paul to proclaim. God has chosen him to step out to the Gentiles, just as once the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah were called to be lights to the nations in God’s name. It is God’s grace to which Paul submits: already from birth he was chosen to go God’s ways. At our birth, God already envisaged where and how we would fulfil our calling. Are we already standing there? May He help get us where we need to be?
FIRST READING Gal. 1:13-24
God decided to reveal his Son to me
that I might proclaim Him among the Gentiles.
From the holy apostle Paul’s letter to the Galatians
Brothers and sisters,
You have heard
How I used to live as a Jew,
how I fiercely persecuted the church of God
and sought to exterminate her,
and how in the matter of the Jewish religion
many of my age and my people
in my passionate zeal
for the traditions of ancestry.
But then God decided,
who had chosen me from birth
and called me by his grace,
decided to reveal His Son to me
that I might proclaim Him among the heathen peoples.
After that, I immediately left for Arabia,
without consulting a human being.
Nor did I go to Jerusalem,
to those who were apostles before me.
But I left at once for Arabia,
and from Arabia I returned again to Damascus.
Only three years later I went to Jerusalem
to become acquainted with Cephas
and I stayed with him for only a fortnight.
Of the other apostles I met no one
except James, the brother of the Lord.
What I write is the pure truth : God is my witness.
Then I went to Syria and Silicia
without the churches of Christ in Judea
had come to know me personally.
They knew only by hearsay :
‘He who persecuted us before ,
now proclaims the faith he first wanted to exterminate.’
And they glorified God for my sake.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 139(138), 1-3, 13-14, 15
Lead me, Lord, along tried paths.
Thou knowest me, Lord, and Thou seest me through,
Thou seest me where I go or stand.
From afar Thou knowest my thoughts,
Thou knowest why I am working or resting.
For what is in me Thou hast created,
Thou hast formed me like a tissue
formed in the mother’s womb.
I thank Thee for the miracle of my life,
for all the wonders Thou hast made.
Thou also knowest all that goes on in my spirit,
my innermost being is not hidden from Thee.
When I was secretly brought forth,
my threads of life were woven in the womb.
ALLELUIA Mt.4, 4b
Alleluia.
Not from bread alone does man live,
but from all that proceeds from the mouth of God.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk. 10, 38-42
Martha received Jesus into her home.
She chose the best part.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke
In those days Jesus came to a village
where a woman called Marta received Him into her dwelling.
She had a sister, Mary who
-seated at the feet of the Lord –
listened to His words.
Marta was engrossed in the busyness of ministry ,
but she joined them for a moment and said :
‘Lord, let it be indifferent to You
that my sister has me serve alone?
‘Then tell her to help me.’
The Lord answered her in reply :
‘Marta, Marta ,
how much you worry and fuss about many things.
‘Only one thing is necessary.
‘Mary has chosen the best part
and it will not be taken away from her.’

Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On brotherhood and social friendship
60. In the New Testament, Hillel’s precept has found a
positive expression: ‘Everything you want men to do for you,
do also for them; this is the law and the prophets’ (Mat 7:12). This
call is universal, it includes all, just because of their human
condition, because the Most High, the heavenly Father ‘makes his sun rise
over wicked and good’ (Mat 5:45). And consequently, it demands: ‘Be
merciful, as your Father is merciful’ (Luke 6:36).
