Invitation
May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.
Available every day.
Considerations
The reading includes a concluding appeal of the letter. This letter repeatedly speaks of dominions and powers from heavenly regions. In the worldview of the time, the earth is built in tiers. Evil spirits dwell in the lower regions. at the top is the glorified Christ. The spatial imagery is not to be understood literally.
FIRST READING Eph. 6, 10-20
Put on the armour of God to stand firm.
From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of Ephesus
Brothers and sisters,
Seek your strength in the Lord and his omnipotence.
Put on the armour of God
in order to be able to stand firm against the wiles of the devil.
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood
but against the dominions, against the powers,
against the rulers of this darkness,
against the evil spirits in the heavens.
Therefore take hold of the armour of God ;
Then you will be able to resist in the day of terror
and stand firm, fighting to the end.
Stand then,
gird up your loins with the truth,
clad in the armour of righteousness,
feet shod with zeal for the gospel of peace.
Handle thereby the great shield of faith,
with which thou canst quench all the fiery darts of the evil one.
Take also the helmet of salvation
and the sword of the Spirit,
that is: the word of God.
Pray and supplicate in the Spirit
at every opportunity and in all kinds of ways.
Keep vigils for this purpose
in which you persistently implore God for all the saints.
Pray also for me,
that the word may be given me when I open my mouth
so that I may boldly reveal the mystery
For which I am an envoy in chains.
Pray that I may boldly proclaim it ,
as is my duty.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 144(143), 1, 2, 9-10
Glorify will I the Lord, my rock.
Glorify will I the Lord, my rock,
He made my arms strong in battle,
my hands skillful in fighting.
My support and my fortress, my protector and saviour,
my shield and my refuge, who subdues nations.
Then I sing a new song, my God,
then I play to Thee on the lyre.
For You who grant triumph to kings,
who saved David, Your servant.
ALLELUIA I Petr. 1, 25
Alleluia.
The word of the Lord remains for ever;
and this word is message
which has been proclaimed to you in the gospel.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk 13:31-35
It is not fitting that a prophet should perish outside Jerusalem.
From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke
At that time, some Pharisees came to tell Jesus :
‘Flee go from here ,
for Herod wants to kill You.’
He spoke to them :
Behold, I drive out devils
and I work healings today and tomorrow ;
and on the third day the consummation will come for Me.
‘But today, tomorrow and the day after, I must go forth ,
for it is not fitting that a prophet should perish outside Jerusalem.
‘Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
that kills and stones the prophets sent to you !
‘How often have I wished to gather thy children ,
as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,
but ye have not willed.
‘Behold, thy house shall be left uninhabited.
‘I say unto thee : Ye shall see Me no more
Until the time cometh when ye shall say :
Blessed is the Coming in the name of the Lord.’

Fratelli Tutti
Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On brotherhood and social friendship
83. This explains why a Samaritan woman, when Jesus asked her to
asked her to drink, emphatically replied, ‘How can You, as a Jew, ask to
ask me, a Samaritan, to drink?’ (Jn 4:9). For those who
sought accusations that could discredit Jesus, the
most offensive thing they found was to say to Him that He was ‘possessed of the
devil possessed’ and was “a Samaritan” (Jn 8:48). Therefore, this
merciful encounter between a Samaritan and a Jew is a powerful
provocation, which belies every ideological manipulation, so that we can expand our
circle by giving to our capacity to love a universal
dimension, capable of breaking down all prejudices, all historical or
cultural barriers, all petty interests.
