Invitation
May I hereby call your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with you the joy of the Gospel.
Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.
Available every day
Consideration
Is Hebrews primarily a doctrinal document, or is it primarily meant to encourage Christians in difficult times? Why not both? If we are members of a New Covenant, then surely we should live according to that New Covenant-even today. Faith, hope and love are therefore at the heart of today’s text, with a little hint to current events of the time.
FIRST READING Hebrews 10, 19-25
Let us hold unwaveringly to the confession of our hope,
and compete with one another in love.
From the letter to the Hebrews
Brothers and sisters,
Through the blood of Jesus
we have been granted free access to the sanctuary.
In his own body
He paved the new, living way for us,
right through the veil.
We now have
‘that great priest appointed over the house of God’.
Let us then draw near,
but with a sincere heart
and in the full conviction of our faith,
our hearts purged of all guilt,
our bodies washed with pure water.
Let us hold unwaveringly to the confession of our hope,
for He who made the promises is trustworthy.
Let us keep one another in mind
to compete with each other in love and acts of love.
We should not stay away from our meetings,
as some are in the habit of doing;
let us encourage one another,
and this all the more as ye see the great day drawing near.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 24(23), 1-2, 3-4ab, 5-6
This is the generation that turns to the Lord,
that stands before the face of Jacob’s God.
To God belongs the earth and all that is upon it,
the disk of the earth and all that dwells therein;
for He founded her on the water,
established her on the sea.
Who shall ascend the mountain of the Lord,
who shall stand in his sanctuary?
Who is pure of hands and pure of heart,
sets not his sights on what is evil.
He will be blessed by the Lord,
rewarded by God, his redeemer.
So does the generation that turns to Him,
that stands before the face of Jacob’s God.
ALLELUIA cf. Acts 16, 14b
Alleluia.
Make our hearts receptive, Lord,
and that we turn to the word of your Son.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mk. 4, 21-25
The measure that ye use shall also be used for you.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark
At that time Jesus said to the crowd :
is there sometimes a lamp ,
to be put under the bushel or under the pew
or, on the contrary, to be placed on the standard?
‘Nothing is hidden that will not be made public ;
And nothing is secret that will not be brought to light.
‘If anyone has ears to hear, he listens.’
Further, He said :
‘Take heed what ye hear.
‘The measure that ye use
shall also be used for thee ;
Even a toemate shall be given to thee.
‘To him who has shall be given ;
but he who has not
him shall yet be taken away even what he has.’

Fratelli tutti
Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On brotherhood and social friendship
174. Courage and generosity are needed to freely set certain
common goals and to ensure the fulfilment of certain
essential norms everywhere in the world. For this to be truly useful,
there must be support for ‘the requirement to remain faithful to contracted
commitments (pacta sunt servanda)’, so as to avoid ’of
being tempted to appeal to the law of power rather
than to the force of law’. This requires strengthening
‘the normative instruments for the peaceful settlement of
disputes […], so that ‘their scope and obligatory character are
are strengthened’. Of these normative instruments, multilateral
agreements between states should be preferred,
because they better reflect than bilateral agreements the concern for a truly
universal common good and the protection of the weakest states
guarantee.
