With the second creation story, another part of the book of Genesis begins, leading to the story of the tower of Babel. The second creation story is much older than the first: 10th century versus 6th century. Even someone who is not familiar with the Bible notices the difference: according to the first, plants are created on the third day, but in addition, we read that the garden of Eden is created only after the creation of man; the name of God in the first account is Elohim (God as in many places in the Middle East: El ), in the second account Yahweh-Elohim. This can be seen even in the translations when you compare them. The editor overlooks these ‘contradictions’ when relating the two accounts.
FIRST READING Gen. 2:4b-9,15-17
God placed the man He had formed in the garden.
From the book of Genesis
When the Lord God made the earth and the heavens ,
there were no wild plants on the earth
and no crops grew
because God had not yet let rain fall on the earth
and there was no man yet to work the earth,
to draw water from the earth
and to water the earth’s soil.
Then the Lord God fashioned man from the dust,
taken from the earth,
and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life:
Thus man became a living being.
Then the Lord God made a garden in Eden,
somewhere in the east,
and in it he placed the man he had created.
The Lord God allowed all kinds of trees to sprout from the ground,
all kinds of trees, attractive to look at and delicious to eat from;
There was also a tree of life
in the middle of the garden
and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Then the Lord God brought man into the garden of Eden,
to cultivate it and manage it.
And the Lord God gave man this commandment:
‘From every tree in the garden you may freely eat ,
but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat.
you shall not eat
for in the day that you eat thereof you shall die’.
INTERLUDIUM Ps 104(103), 1-2a, 27-28, 29bc-30
Glorify the Lord, O my soul.
Glorify the Lord, O my soul!
How great you are, O Lord my God!
You are clothed with glory and splendour.
Your garment is pure light.
All animals wait for You
That You will feed them in due time.
What You spread before them they gather,
they are satisfied when You open Your hand.
If You take away their spirit, they perish,
and return to earth.
But send Your spirit, then life returns,
You make Your creation new.
ALLELUYA cf. Acts 16:14b
Alleluia.
Make our hearts receptive, Lord, and let us turn to the word of your Son.
And turn us to the word of your Son.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mk 7, 14-23
That which proceeds from man defiles man.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark
At that moment, Jesus called the people together again and said to them:
‘All of you listen to me and you will understand:
Nothing can defile a man
that which comes into him from outside.
‘But that which comes out of a man
That defiles a man
‘Whoever has ears to hear, listen’.
After he had withdrawn from the village
and had returned home
his disciples asked him questions about the parable.
He answered them:
‘Do you also understand so little?
‘Do you not realise
that everything that enters a man from outside
cannot defile him
because it comes not into his heart but into his belly
and finds its way to a certain place’.
Thus, He declared all food clean.
‘But.
-He said
what comes out of man ,
Which defiles man.
‘For from within, from the heart of man, come evil thoughts, fornication
come evil thoughts, fornication, theft, robbery, murder,
adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit,
licentiousness, envy, envy, blasphemy, pride, levity.
‘All these evil things come from within
and defile man’.

Encyclical by
POPE FRANCISCUS
On brotherhood and social friendship
The sacrifices of love
187. This love, central to the spirit of politics, is always
a privileged love for the least, which underlies every activity in favour of
them. It is only through a gaze widened by love
and which leads to recognition of the dignity of the other,
are the poor recognised and valued in their immense dignity,
respected in their own style and culture, and thus truly integrated
into society. This vision is at the heart of the true spirit of politics.
The paths that open up from there differ from those of soulless pragmatism.
For example, ‘the scandal of poverty cannot be addressed
by promoting strategies
that only appease the poor and turn them into docile, harmless
and innocent. How sad it is to see that behind supposedly altruistic works,
the other is reduced to passivity’. What is needed are
different channels of expression and social participation.
Education is at the service of this path so that everyone becomes the creator of
their own destiny. Here is the subsidiarity principle
which cannot be separated from the solidarity principle, let see its value.
