CONSIDERATION
It was only after an earnest prayer to the Holy Spirit that the apostles chose Mattias as Judas’ deputy. That prayer to the Holy Spirit is called ‘discernment’. It is a process that requires much wisdom and consultation. The apostles chose Mattias because they believed he was truly a disciple of the Lord in word and deed. The Lord himself chose Mattias because he was ‘a friend’. That means: he loved the Lord. Perhaps that is the highest standard for being a disciple: loving the Lord with heart and soul.
FIRST READING Acts 1:15-17,20-26
Fate fell on Mattias.
He was added to the group of the 11 apostles.
In those days Peter stood up in the midst of the brethren
– there was a group
of about one hundred and twenty people gathered –
and spoke:
“Men brethren ,
the word of Scripture was to be fulfilled
which the Holy Spirit by the mouth of David
had spoken beforehand concerning Judas,
who became the guide
of those who took Jesus captive.
He belonged to our number
and had been given his part in this ministry.
After all, it is written in the book of Psalms:
His dwelling place become a wilderness
and no one dwelt there any more;
and also:
Another take over his office.
So one of the men
who belonged to our company
during the time the Lord Jesus was among us,
from the baptism of John
until the day He was taken away from us,
become with us a witness to His resurrection.”
Two were suggested:
Joseph also called Barsabbas, nicknamed Justus,
and Mattias.
Then they prayed as follows:
“Thou, Lord, who knowest all hearts ,
designate the one whom Thou hast chosen of these two
to occupy the place in this ministry and apostleship,
to which Judas became unfaithful
to go away to his own place.”
Then they drew lots and the lot fell on Mattias.
He was added to the group of the 11 apostles.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 113(112), 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8
The Lord places the powerless
amidst the mighty of his people.
Alleluia
Glorified, servants of the Lord,
glorify the Name of the Lord.
The Name of the Lord be praised
today and for ever.
From dawn to dusk
every one must worship that Name.
For above the nations the Lord enthrones,
his Glory rules the heavens.
Who is like the Lord our God,
seated high above the stars?
Who oversees from on high
the firmament and the earth.
Who lifts the powerless from the dust,
snatches from rubbish heaps the poor;
to place them in the circle of princes,
in the midst of the mighty of his people.
ALLELUIA John 15, 16
Not ye have chosen Me but I have chosen you.
Alleluia.
I have chosen you
and I have given you the task of going on a journey
and bring forth fruit that may last.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Jn 15:9-17
It is not you who have chosen Me but I you.
At that time, Jesus said to his disciples:
“As the Father has loved Me
so also I have loved you.
Abide in my love.
If you keep my commandments
ye shall abide in my love,
as I, who have kept my Father’s commandments
abide in his love.
This I say unto you
that my joy may be in you
and your joy may become perfect.
This is My commandment,
that you love one another as I have loved you.
No greater love can anyone have than this,
that he gives his life for his friends.
Ye are my friends if ye do what I command you.
I no longer call you servants
for the servant knows not what his lord does,
but I have called you friends
for I have communicated to you all that I have heard from the Father.
Not ye have chosen Me but I have chosen you,
and I have given you the task of going on a journey
and bring forth fruit that may last.
Then the Father will give you
all that ye ask Him in My Name.
This is My commandment,
that ye love one another.”

Encyclical of
Pope Francis
On brotherhood and social friendship
Christian identity
277. The Church values God’s actions in other religions and “rejects
nothing of what is true and sacred in these religions. With sincere reverence
she regards those ways of acting and living, those precepts and
teachings which […] not infrequently reflect a ray of that
Truth which enlightens all men”. As Christians, however, we cannot
hide the fact that “when the music of the gospel ceases to vibrate within us
vibrate, we have lost the joy that comes from compassion, the
tenderness that comes from trust, the capacity for reconciliation that
finds its source in the knowledge that we are always forgiven and sent.
When the music of the gospel ceases to sound in our homes, in
our squares, in our workplaces, in politics and economics, will
we will have extinguished the melody that prompted us to fight for the
dignity of every man and woman”. Others drink from other
springs. For us, this source of human dignity and
brotherhood in the gospel of Jesus Christ. From this “flows for the
christian thought and action of the Church derives the primacy given
given to the relationship, the encounter with the sacred mystery of the
other, to universal communion with all humanity as the
vocation of all”.
