Today, following the book of Genesis, we begin the reading from Exodus. Genesis was almost entirely outside profane world history. (Certain states do correspond to what was common among nomads of the second millennium). But with Exodus, we are right on the edge of history. This is already evident in today’s reading. We find testimonies about provision towns, about brickworks where foreign slaves work under Egyptian overseers. In short: Certain elements tally with conditions under e.g. Ramses II.
FIRST READING Ex.1, 8-14.22
No matter how the Israelites were oppressed ,
they continued to grow in numbers.
From the book of Exodus
In those days in Egypt
a new king came to rule,
who knew nothing more of Joseph.
He spoke to the people:
“Listen, those Israelites are becoming too numerous and too strong for us.
So we should take wise measures against them
to prevent them from becoming even more numerous.
If we get into war
they will join our opponents,
wage war against us and move out of the country.”
Then they appointed work bosses over the people
to oppress them through forced labour.
The Israelites had to go before Pharaoh
build the cities of provisions Pitom and Rameses.
But no matter how they were oppressed, they continued to grow in numbers
and multiplied more and more,
so that the Egyptians became afraid of them,
and forced the Israelites to perform hard labour.
They made their lives miserable by making them work hard
in brickworks and in the fields.
That was the hard work they forced them to do.
Then Pharaoh ordered all his subjects:
“Every boy that is born you must throw into the Nile;
the girls you can leave alive.”

We were saved by the Name of the Lord.
Had the Lord not been with us ,
so may Israel say ;
had not the Lord been with us
when all turned against us ;
then we would have been devoured alive,
scorched by the glow of their anger.
Then the flood would have swallowed us up,
the torrent had swept us away ;
we would have sunk helplessly
in foaming pools of water.
The Lord be praised, He did not relinquish us,
snatched the prey from their teeth.
We fled like a bird just yet,
escaped the net of the hunters.
The net of the fowler was torn,
we were released from it.
We were saved by the Name of the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.

GOSPEL Mt 10:34-11:1
I have not come to bring peace, but the sword.
At that time, Jesus said to his disciples:
“Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth;
I have not come to bring peace, but the sword.
Discord have I come to bring
between a man and his father, between daughter and mother
daughter-in-law and mother-in-law;
and one’s household members will be his enemies.
Whoever loves father or mother more than Me,
is not worthy of Me;
whoever loves son or daughter more than Me,
is not worthy of Me;
And whoever does not take up his cross and follow Me,
is not worthy of Me.
Whoever finds his life shall lose it,
and whoever loses his life for My sake shall find it.
Whoever takes you up, takes Me up;
and whoever takes Me up, takes up Him who sent Me.
Whoever takes up a prophet because he is a prophet,
shall also receive the wages of a prophet
and whoever takes up a virtuous man
because it is a virtuous man,
will also receive the wages of a virtuous person.
And whoever takes up one of these little ones
even if only a cup of cold water
because he is My disciple,
verily I say unto you:
His reward will certainly not escape him.”
When Jesus had finished His lessons to His 12 disciples,
he departed from there
to teach and preach in their cities.

On caring for the common home
51. Inequality affects not only individuals but whole countries and
obliges one to reflect on an ethics of international relations.
After all, there is a real “ecological debt”, especially between
north and south, linked to commercial imbalances with
ecological consequences, as well as the disproportionate use of
natural resources by some countries throughout history.
The export of some raw materials to meet the demand of the markets
of the industrialised north have caused localised damage,
such as mercury poisoning in the gold mines or sulphur poisoning
in the copper mines. In particular, one should take into account
with the gas waste that has accumulated worldwide for two centuries
and created a situation that now affects all the countries of the world.
The warming caused by the huge consumption
of some rich countries, is affecting the poorest areas of the
world, especially in Africa, where the increase in temperature along with
drought is having a disastrous effect on the yield of cultures.
Added to this is the damage caused by exports to
developing countries of solid and liquid toxic waste and by the
polluting activity of companies doing in the less developed
countries what they cannot do in the countries that provide the capital
provide: “We find that the companies operating in this way are often
multinationals that do here what they are not allowed to do in developed
countries or so-called first-world countries. When they stop their
operations and withdraw, they generally leave behind a
great harm to people and the environment, such as unemployment, villages
without life, depletion of some natural resources, deforestation,
impoverishment of local agriculture and livestock, craters, ruined
hills, polluted rivers and some social facilities
that cannot be maintained”.
