Here we find the apostolic apology that we also find in later letters. Paul often feels the need to defend himself and also explicitly point out his selflessness by providing for himself. Otherwise, yesterday’s affable content continues. The relationship between Paul and the congregation of Thessalonica must have been very good (unlike Corinth).
FIRST READING I Thess. 2:9-13
While we were preaching the gospel to you ,
we worked day and night.
From the holy apostle Paul’s first letter to the Christians
of Thessalonica
Brothers and sisters,
Ye remember our trouble and effort.
While we proclaimed to you the gospel of God ,
we worked day and night
so as not to be a burden to any of you.
With God you can testify
how pious and upright and blameless
we have behaved towards you, the faithful.
Thou knowest,
like a father we have admonished and encouraged each one of you;
we have exhorted you to live a life worthy of God
who calls you to the glory of his kingdom.
And therefore we thank God without ceasing,
that you have received and accepted
from us and accepted it :
Not as a word of men but as what it is indeed :
The word of God ;
and it remains effective in you who believe.

At that time Jesus spoke :
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
“Ye resemble limbed tombs that look beautiful on the outside ,
but inside they are full of bones
and all manner of uncleanness.
“So also ye on the outside look like saints to men
but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
“Ye build the tombs of prophets
and decorate the tombs of saints
and ye say :
If we had lived in the time of our fathers ,
we would not have been accomplices
to the murder of the prophets !
“Thou therefore testify against thyself
that thou art sons of prophet murderers.
“Now then,
make thou full the measure of thy fathers!”

95. The environment is a collective good, a legacy of all humanity
and a responsibility of all. If anyone owns any part of it,
then it is only to manage it for the benefit of all. If we
do not, we burden our conscience with denying the existence of the
other. This is why the bishops of New Zealand have
wondered what the commandment “thou shalt not kill” meant, when
“twenty per cent of the world’s population
consume resources to such an extent that they deprive poor peoples and future generations
of what they need to survive”.
