Consideration
October in the year 520. No one seems to remember the first temple. Vaguely alive among the elders is the image of Solomon’s greatest temple. A number of exiles have started rebuilding, but soon discouragement strikes: there is still so much work to be done on God’s house! And then God speaks: He who showed himself to be the deliverer at the exodus will not abandon his people. We must look into the future. The image of yesteryear must be let go. It is as if God is also encouraging his discouraged church builders today, telling them: overcome your nostalgia for the Church of yesterday, and take courage: build the Church of the ages to come!

FIRST READING             Hag. 1, 15b-2,9

A short while more, and then I will fill this house with glory.

From the Prophet Haggai

In the second year of King Darius,
in the seventh month, on the twenty-first day
the word of the Lord was
entrusted to the prophet Haggai :
“Say to Zerubbabel the son of Kaltiel ,
the governor of Judah,
and to the high priest Joshua the son of Jehosadak,
and to the rest of the people the following :
Is there anyone left among you ,
who has seen this house
in its former glory ?
“And what do ye see now ?
“Is there anything left for you to see?
“Nevertheless, keep good courage, Zerubbabel ;
– so saith the word of the Lord –
keep good courage, ye high priest Joshua, son of Jehosadak ;
take courage, all ye that inhabit the land
– thus reads the divine speech of the Lord -.
“Go to work! I am with you!
” So reads the divine speech of the Lord of heavenly powers.
“I keep the promise I made ,
when you went out of Egypt.
“My spirit abides among you; do not be afraid.
“Thus speaks the Lord of heavenly powers :
Another short time, a very short time ,
and I will bring the heavens and the earth,
the sea and the land in turmoil;
all nations I bring into turmoil :
then all nations will come here with their treasures
and then I fill this house with glory,
says the Lord of heavenly powers.
“To Me belongs the silver ,
to Me belongs the gold,
so says the Lord of heavenly powers.
“The glory of this second house
shall be greater than that of the first,
says the Lord of heavenly powers.
“And this is the place where I will give peace ,
so saith the Lord of heavenly powers.”

INTERLUDIUM           Ps. 43(42), 1, 2, 3, 4

Trust in God, one day I will praise Him again,
my Saviour and my God.

God, do me justice,
stand up for me among this unholy people,
deliver me from the man full of falsehood and deceit.

Thou art my strength, why dost Thou cast me out ?
why then do I walk about sadly,
tormented by enemies ?

Send me thy light, thy support to guide me,
to lead me to thy mountain and into thy tent.
Then I will go to your altar, God who gives joy,
and praise you by the zither, God my God.

ALLELUIA               cf. Acts 16, 14b

Alleluia.
Make our hearts receptive, Lord,
and that we turn to the word of your Son.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                 Lk. 9, 18-22

Thou art the Anointed One of God.
The Son of Man must suffer much.

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke

Once when Jesus was praying alone
and His disciples came to Him
he asked them the question :
“Who do men say that I am?”
They answered :
“John the Baptist ,
others say : Elijah,
and still others : one of the old prophets has risen.”
At this He said to them :
“But you, who do you say that I am?”
Now Peter answered :
“The Anointed One of God.”
But He expressly forbade them to say this to anyone.
“The Son of Man
-he spoke –
must suffer much
and be rejected by the elders,
high priests and scribes,
but after being put to death
hi will rise on the third day.”

Laudato Si

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On caring for the common home

125. If we consider what the appropriate relations of man are with the
world that surrounds him, then it is necessary to have a correct conception of
labour, because, when we speak of man’s relation to
things, the question arises as to the meaning and purpose of man’s influence on
man on reality. We are not just talking about manual labour or
tilling the earth, but about any activity that involves some
change of the existing, from the elaboration of a social
opinion to the planning of a technical development. Every
form of labour presupposes an idea about the relationship that man can or
should establish with what is different from him. Christian spirituality
together with the contemplative wonderment at creatures that
we find in St Francis of Assisi, has also developed a rich and healthy idea
about labour, as we meet, for example, in the life
of Blessed Charles de Foucauld and his disciples.
