Consideration
The first word the disciples of Jesus should speak when they meet people is: ‘Peace’. Peace is a fruit of the Spirit. Those who approach people peacefully, and remain peaceful even when signs of goodwill are not accepted, show that the Spirit is at work in them. With Luke, the Spirit is the engine of proclamation: he propels the disciples forward, to ever new horizons. That is why it is so important to implore that Spirit every time we come together to celebrate liturgy.
FIRST READING 2 Tim. 4, 9-17a
Only Luke is with me.
From the holy apostle Paul’s second letter to Timothy
Dear one,
Do your best to come to me soon.
Demas preferred the world
and abandoned me.
He left for Tessalonica,
Crescens to Galatia,
Titus to Dalmatia.
Only Luke is with me.
Go and get Marcus and take him with you ;
i can make good use of him for work.
Tychikus I have sent to Ephesus.
When ye come, bring with you the cloak
which I left at Troas with Carpus,
and also the books, especially the parchments.
Alexander, the coppersmith has done me much harm.
The Lord will repay him according to his works.
Take heed also of him
for he has fiercely contested our words.
At my first defence no one assisted me,
all abandoned me.
May it not be blamed on them.
But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength
to fulfil my ministry as preacher of the gospel
to the end,
so that all nations may hear of it.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 145(144), 10-11, 12-13ab, 17-18
The saints, Lord, proclaim your glory.
Your works shall praise You, Lord,
thy pious ones shall praise thee.
They praise the glory of Your rule,
thy power they proclaim.
They shall make Your power known to men,
the splendour of your kingdom.
Your kingdom is a kingdom for all ages,
your rule is for every generation.
The Lord is just in all his ways,
and holy in all He does.
Near is the Lord to every one who calls on Him,
to every one who prays sincerely to Him.
ALLELUIA John 15, 16
Alleluia.
I have chosen you
and I have given you the task of going on a journey
and bring forth fruit that may last.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk. 10, 1-9
The harvest is great but workers are few.
From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke
At that time the Lord appointed seventy-two disciples
and sent them before him two by two
to all the cities and places
whither He Himself intended to go.
He spoke to them :
“The harvest is great
but labourers are few.
“Therefore ask the Lord of the harvest
to send labourers to harvest.
“Go then,
but behold, I send you as lambs among wolves.
“Take with you no purse, no travelling bag, no footwear
and greet no one on the way.
“Into whatever house you enter, let your first word be :
Peace to this house !
“If a man of peace lives there
then your peace will rest on him ;
if not, it will return to you.
“Stay in that house and eat and drink what they offer you ;
for the labourer is worth his wages.
“Do not go from one house to another ;
in every city where ye enter and are received,
eat what is set before you,
heal the sick who are there
and say to them : The kingdom of God is near to you.”

Fratelli tutti
Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On brotherhood and social friendship
157. The common good presupposes respect for the human
person as such, with fundamental and inalienable rights that
are aimed at his integral development. It also requires the instruments
for social welfare and social security and the
development of middle groups through the application of the principle of
subsidiarity. Below, the family in particular emerges as the
primary cell of society. Finally, the common good requires
social peace, i.e. stability and security of a
particular order, which is not achieved without attention to distributive
justice. Violation of this always results in violence.
All of society – and in it, especially the state – has a duty to defend and promote the common good to defend and promote it.
