Consideration

The birth of John the Baptist is a feast day for the Church. The strange things that surround his birth show us how important this prophet must be. His mother, Elisabeth, bore the shame of infertility. God brought a reversal in this. His father, Zacharias, an old priest,was dumbfounded when news of the arrival of a child was reported to him. John received his name first of all through his mother, something that went against all customary practice. This whole sequence of events is thought-provoking and indicates: this child will play an important role in the history of salvation.

FIRST READING     Isa 49:1-6

I appoint you to be the light of the Gentiles.

From the Prophet Isaiah

Listen to me, islands,
prick up your ears, peoples from afar:
The Lord has called me from my mother’s womb,
from my mother’s womb He has called my name.
He has made my mouth a cutting sword,
with the shadow of His hand He has covered me.
He made me a sharpened arrow,
and in His quiver He hath secured me.
He spoke to me :
“My servant art thou,
Israel in whom I will glorify Me.”
And I said :
“In vain have I tarried,

John is his name.

Luke

At that time the moment arrived for Elisabeth
that she became a mother;
she gave birth to a son.
When the neighbours and family heard
how great was the mercy
the Lord had shown to her,
they shared in her joy.
On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child
and they wanted to name it after his father Zacharias.
But his mother replied:
“Nay, it must be called John.”
They answered her:
“But there is no one in your family called that.”
With gestures, they then asked his father
what he wanted to call it.
The latter asked for a writing tablet and wrote on it:
“John he will be called.”
They all stood amazed.
Immediately afterwards his mouth was opened,
his tongue loosened
and he proclaimed God’s praise.
Awe filled all the surrounding people
and throughout the mountainous land of Judea
all the events were told around.
Everyone who heard it thought about it and wondered:
“What will become of this child?”
For the hand of the Lord was with him.
The child grew up and the Spirit controlled him more and more.
He stayed in the desert
until the day when he showed himself to Israel in public.

On caring for the common home

31. A greater scarcity of water will increase the cost of
food and various products that depend on water use,
will result. Some studies have signalled the danger
that one will face acute
with water scarcity if no urgent action is taken.
The environmental effects could affect billions of people
and, on the other hand, it is foreseeable that the
water control by large international corporations
is turning into one of the main sources of conflict in this
century.

Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?

Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging

De Abrahamcyclus uit het boek Genesis begint met de merkwaardige woorden: lekh, lekha. -Lekh= ga;
maar blijkbaar is dit gaan niet genoeg. Het wordt gevolgd door een sterke nadruk.
Lekha = ga weg van, trek weg, d.w.z.: breek met, trek eropuit.
Wat hier gebeurt, is dan ook een ‘breken’ met alle menselijke banden en vertrekken naar het onbekende, alleen vertrouwend op Gods belofte. Daarom juist blijft Abraham, het type, het model van het zich gelovig toevertrouwen en op weg gaan, waarheen die weg ons ook leiden mag. Het is dan ook zowel een ruimtelijke als een spirituele weg die daarmee kan bedoeld worden.

EERSTE LEZING               Gen. 12, 1-9

Abram trok weg, zoals de Heer hem had opgedragen.

Uit het Boek Genesis

In die dagen zei God de Heer tot Abram :
“Trek weg uit uw land, uw stam en uw familie,
naar het land dat Ik u aan zal wijzen.
“Ik zal een groot volk van u maken.
“Ik zal u zegenen en uw naam groot maken,
zodat hij een zegen zal zijn.
“Ik zal zegenen die u zegenen,
maar die u vervloeken, zal Ik vervloeken.
“Door u zal zegen komen over alle geslachten op aarde.”

Toen trok Abram weg, zoals de Heer hem had opgedragen,
en Lot ging met hem mee.
Abram was vijfenzeventig jaar toen hij Haran verliet.
Met zijn vrouw Sarai en met Lot,
de zoon van zijn broer,
met al hun bezittingen en met allen
die zij in Haran in dienst hadden genomen,
ging Abram op weg naar Kanaän.
In Kanaän aangekomen,
trok Abram het land in,
tot bij de heilige plaats van Sichem,
de eik van More.
Toendertijd waren de Kanaänieten nog in het land.
Daar verscheen God de Heer aan Abram en zei :
“Aan uw nageslacht zal Ik dit land in bezit geven.”
Toen richtte Abram daar een altaar op
ter ere van de Heer, die hem verschenen was.
Vandaar trok hij verder naar het gebergte
ten oosten van Betel,
sloeg zijn tent op
tussen Betel in het westen en Aï in het oosten,
richtte een altaar op ter ere van de Heer
en riep de naam van de Heer aan.
Daarna trok Abram verder naar de Negeb toe.

TUSSENZANG             Ps. 33(32), 12-13, 18-19, 20, 22

Zalig het volk dat de Heer heeft als God,
de natie door Hem tot zijn erfdeel gekozen.

“Want met het oordeel dat gij velt

“Waarom kijkt gij naar de splinter in het oog van uw broeder
en merkt gij de balk niet op in uw eigen oog ?
“Of hoe kunt ge tot uw broeder zeggen :
laat mij de splinter uit uw oog halen, en zie,
in uw eigen oog zit de balk nog !
“Huichelaar, haal eerst die balk uit uw eigen oog,

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijke huis

30. Terwijl de kwaliteit van beschikbaar water voortdurend verslechtert,
wordt op sommige plaatsen de tendens steeds sterker om deze schaarse
hulpbron te privatiseren, te veranderen in koopwaar, onderworpen aan de
wetten van de markt. In werkelijkheid is de toegang tot veilig drinkwater
een wezenlijk, fundamenteel en universeel recht van de mens, omdat dit het
overleven van de mensen bepaalt en daarom een voorwaarde voor het
uitoefenen van de andere rechten van de mens is. Deze wereld heeft een
zware maatschappelijke schuld jegens de armen, die geen toegang hebben
tot drinkwater, omdat dit betekent dat hun het recht om te leven ontzegd
wordt, dat geworteld is in hun onvervreemdbare waardigheid. Deze schuld
wordt gedeeltelijk weggenomen door een grotere economische inspanning
om schoon water en zuiveringsinstallaties te leveren voor de armste
mensen. Maar men constateert een verspilling van water in de ontwikkelde
landen, maar ook in de ontwikkelingslanden die grote reserves bezitten.
Dat maakt duidelijk dat het waterprobleem gedeeltelijk een kwestie van
opvoeding en cultuur is, omdat er geen bewustzijn is van de ernst van dit
gedrag in een context van grote ongelijkheid.

Consideración

El ciclo de Abraham del libro del Génesis comienza con las curiosas palabras: lekh, lekha. -Lekh= ir;
pero aparentemente este ir no es suficiente. Le sigue un fuerte énfasis.
Lekha = alejarse, apartarse, es decir: romper, retirarse.
Lo que ocurre aquí, pues, es una “ruptura” de todos los lazos humanos y una partida hacia lo desconocido, confiando sólo en la promesa de Dios. Precisamente por eso, Abraham, el tipo, sigue siendo el modelo de confiarse fielmente y ponerse en camino, dondequiera que éste nos lleve. Se trata, pues, de un camino tanto espacial como espiritual.

PRIMERA LECTURA            Gn 12, 1-9
Abram se puso en camino, como el Señor le había indicado.

Sobre el cuidado de la casa común

30. A medida que se deteriora la calidad del agua disponible
en algunos lugares crece la tendencia a privatizar este
recurso escaso, a privatizarlo, a convertirlo en una mercancía, sujeta a las
leyes del mercado. En realidad, el acceso al agua potable es
un derecho humano esencial, fundamental y universal, porque determina la
supervivencia de los seres humanos y, por tanto, un requisito previo para el
ejercicio de otros derechos humanos. Este mundo tiene una
pesada deuda social con los pobres que no tienen acceso
al agua potable, porque esto significa negarles el derecho a vivir
que se les niega, que está enraizado en su dignidad inalienable. Esta deuda
se elimina parcialmente con un mayor esfuerzo económico
para proporcionar agua potable e instalaciones de tratamiento a los
más pobres. Pero se observa un despilfarro de agua en los países desarrollados,
pero también en los países en desarrollo que disponen de grandes reservas.
Esto deja claro que el problema del agua es en parte una cuestión de
educación y cultura, porque no hay conciencia de la gravedad de este

The Abraham cycle from the book of Genesis begins with the curious words: lekh, lekha. -Lekh= go;
but apparently this going is not enough. It is followed by a strong emphasis. Lekha = go away from, pull away, i.e.: break with, pull out.
What happens here, then, is a ‘breaking’ of all human ties and leaving for the unknown, relying only on God’s promise. That is precisely why Abraham, the type, remains the model of faithfully entrusting oneself and setting out on the road, wherever that road may lead us. It is therefore both a spatial and a spiritual path that can be meant by this.

Abram set out, as the Lord had instructed him.

In those days, God the Lord said to Abram :
“Depart from your land, your tribe and your family ,
to the land I will appoint for you.
“I will make of you a great people.
“I will bless you and make your name great ,

On caring for the common home

30. As the quality of available water continues to deteriorate,
the tendency is growing in some places to privatise this scarce
resource, to be turned into a commodity, subject to the
laws of the market. In reality, access to safe drinking water is
an essential, fundamental and universal human right, because it determines the
survival of human beings and therefore a prerequisite for the
exercise of other human rights. This world has a
heavy social debt towards the poor, who do not have access
to drinking water, because this means denying them the right to live,
which is rooted in their inalienable dignity. This debt
is partially removed by a greater economic effort
to provide clean water and treatment facilities for the poorest
people. But one observes a waste of water in developed
countries, but also in developing countries that have large reserves.
This makes it clear that the water problem is partly a matter of
education and culture, because there is no awareness of the seriousness of this
behaviour in a context of great inequality.

maar na ter dood te zijn gebracht,
zal Hij op de derde dag verrijzen.”

en door elke dag opnieuw zijn kruis op te nemen.

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijke huis

29. Een bijzonder ernstig probleem is dat van de kwaliteit van het water
dat beschikbaar is voor de armen en dat iedere dag veel doden ten gevolge
heeft. Onder de armen komen ziekten in verband met water veel voor,
inclusief die welke worden veroorzaakt door micro-organismen en
chemische middelen. Dysenterie en cholera, die te wijten zijn aan
ontoereikende sanitaire voorzieningen en waterreserves, zijn een belangrijke factor
van leed en kindersterfte. De waterhoudende grondlagen worden op veel
plaatsen bedreigd door de vervuiling die wordt veroorzaakt door sommige
activiteiten op het gebied van het delven van grondstoffen, van landbouw
en industrie, vooral in landen waar reglementering en voldoende controle
ontbreekt. Wij denken niet alleen aan het afval van de fabrieken. Men
blijft wasmiddelen en chemische producten die de bevolking op veel
plaatsen in de wereld gebruikt, lozen in rivieren, meren en zeeën.

Sobre el cuidado de la casa común

29. Un problema especialmente grave es el de la calidad del agua
disponible para los pobres, que provoca muchas muertes cada día.
Entre los pobres son frecuentes las enfermedades relacionadas con el agua,
incluidas las causadas por microorganismos y
agentes químicos. La disentería y el cólera, debidos a un
saneamiento y unos recursos hídricos inadecuados, son un factor importante
de sufrimiento y mortalidad infantil. Los acuíferos están amenazados en muchos
lugares por la contaminación causada por algunas
actividades de extracción de recursos, la agricultura
y la industria, especialmente en países donde la regulación y el control adecuado
son inexistentes. No sólo pensamos en los residuos de las fábricas. Una
sigue vertiendo detergentes y productos químicos utilizados por la población en muchos
lugares del mundo en ríos, lagos y mares.

29. A particularly serious problem is that of the quality of water
available to the poor, which results in many deaths every day.
Among the poor, water-related diseases are common,
including those caused by microorganisms and
chemical agents. Dysentery and cholera, due to inadequate sanitation
and water resources, are a major factor
of suffering and infant mortality. Aquifers are threatened in many
places by pollution caused by some
resource extraction activities, agriculture
and industry, especially in countries where regulation and adequate control
are lacking. We are not only thinking of the waste from factories. One
continues to discharge detergents and chemicals used by the population in many
places around the world into rivers, lakes and seas.

Grieken vragen visioenen en mirakels, tekenen zoals bij de andere apostelen. Bij Paulus missen ze die. Paulus heeft echter andere criteria. Maar als ze toch tekenen en visioenen verlangen, dan kan hij daarover meespreken. Tenslotte relativeert hij die buitengewone dingen, ook voor zichzelf. over een visioen dat hij kreeg, kon hij niets vertellen. Zelfs zijn gezondheid laat hem vaak in de steek. En al vraagt hij om genezing (om een mirakel – een teken): ook hij moet het zonder stellen. Omdat leven in Gods genade hem genoeg is. Liever zal hij roemen op zijn zwakheid, dan op openbaringen en mirakels.

EERSTE LEZING                 2 Kor. 12, 1-10
Ik zal het liefst van alles roemen op mijn zwakheden.

Uit de tweede brief van de heilige apostel Paulus aan de christenen van Korinte 

Broeders en zusters,

Moet er geroemd worden?
Het dient wel nergens toe,
maar dan kom ik nu tot visioenen en openbaringen van de Heer.
Ik ken een mens in Christus, die veertien jaar geleden,
in het lichaam of buiten het lichaam
-ik weet het niet, God weet het –
die werd weggerukt naar de derde hemel.
van die mens weet ik dat hij,
met het lichaam of zonder het lichaam
-ik weet het niet, God weet het –
dat hij werd weggerukt naar het paradijs
en onzegbare woorden vernam die geen mens mag uitspreken.
Op zo iemand wil ik roemen.
Voor mijzelf wil ik alleen roemen op mijn zwakheden.
Zou ik werkelijk willen roemen dan was ik geen dwaas ;
ik zou immers de waarheid zeggen.
Maar daar zie ik van af ;
ik wil niet dat iemand mij meer toeschrijft
dan wat hij van mij kan zien of horen.
Ook is er
– want anders zouden die buitengewone openbaringen
mij verwaand kunnen maken –
ook is er een doorn in mijn vlees gestoken,
als een bode van satan die mij moet afranselen.
Tot driemaal toe heb ik de Heer aangeroepen
dat hij van mij zou weggaan.
Maar de Heer antwoordde mij :
“Je hebt genoeg aan mijn genade.
“Kracht wordt juist in zwakheid volkomen.”
Dus zal ik het liefst van alles roemen op mijn zwakheden.
Dan zal de kracht van Christus in mij wonen.
Daarom lijd ik om Christus’ wil gaarne
zwakheid, smaad, nood, vervolging en benauwdheid.
Want als ik zwak ben,
dan ben ik sterk.

TUSSENZANG               Ps. 34(33), 8-9, 10-11, 12-13

Let op en bemerkt hoe genadig de Heer is.

De engel van God legt een schans om hen heen,
om elk die God vreest te beschermen.
Let op en bemerkt hoe genadig de Heer is,
gelukkig is hij die zijn heil zoekt bij Hem.

Eerbiedigt de Heer, gij die Hem gewijd zijt,
want wie Hem eerbiedigt lijdt nimmer gebrek.
De rijken zijn arm en behoeftig geworden,

28. Schoon drinkwater is een kwestie van primair belang, omdat het
onmisbaar is voor het menselijk leven en om de ecosystemen van land en
water te handhaven. De zoetwaterbronnen bevoorraden de sectoren van
gezondheidszorg, landbouw en industrie. De beschikbaarheid van water is
lange tijd betrekkelijk constant gebleven, maar nu is op veel plaatsen de
vraag groter dan het houdbaar aanbod met ernstige gevolgen op korte en
lange termijn. Grote steden, die afhankelijk zijn van belangrijke waterreserves,
hebben te lijden onder perioden van gebrek aan deze hulpbron,
die op kritieke ogenblikken niet altijd op een adequate manier en onpartijdig
wordt beheerd. De armoede aan publiek water voor iedereen kent men
vooral in Afrika, waar grote delen van de bevolking geen toegang hebben
tot veilig drinkwater of te lijden hebben onder periodes van droogte die de
voedselproductie bemoeilijken. In sommige landen zijn er streken met een
overvloed aan water, terwijl andere lijden onder een ernstig gebrek.

Consideración
Los griegos exigen visiones y milagros, señales como con los otros apóstoles. Con Pablo, carecen de ellos. Pablo, sin embargo, tiene otros criterios. Pero si siguen exigiendo signos y visiones, puede hablar de ellos. Por último, relativiza estas cosas extraordinarias, incluso para sí mismo. sobre una visión que recibió, no pudo decir nada. Sobre el cuidado de la casa común

28. El agua potable limpia es una cuestión de primordial importancia porque es
indispensable para la vida humana y para mantener los ecosistemas de tierra y
agua. Las fuentes de agua dulce abastecen a los sectores de
la sanidad, la agricultura y la industria. La disponibilidad de agua ha
mantenido relativamente constante durante mucho tiempo, pero ahora en muchos lugares la
demanda supera la oferta sostenible con graves consecuencias a corto y
largo plazo. Las grandes ciudades, que dependen de importantes recursos hídricos
sufren periodos de falta de este recurso
que en momentos críticos no siempre se gestiona de forma adecuada e imparcial
gestionado. Es conocida la pobreza del agua pública para todos
especialmente en África, donde gran parte de la población no tiene acceso
al agua potable o sufren periodos de sequía que complican
difícil la producción de alimentos. En algunos países, hay regiones con
abundancia de agua, mientras que otras sufren una grave escasez.

Greeks demand visions and miracles, signs as with the other apostles. With Paul, they lack these. Paul, however, has other criteria. But if they still demand signs and visions, he can speak about them. Finally, he puts these extraordinary things into perspective, even for himself. about a vision he received, he could not tell anything. Even his health often lets him down. And even though he asks for healing (for a miracle – a sign): he too has to do without. Because living in God’s grace is enough for him. Brothers and sisters,

Is there any need to praise?
It does not serve any purpose,
but now I come to visions and revelations of the Lord.
I know a man in Christ, who fourteen years ago,
in the body or out of the body
-i don’t know, God knows –
who was snatched away to the third heaven.
of that man I know that he,
with the body or without the body
-i don’t know, God knows –
that he was snatched away to paradise
and heard unspeakable words that no man should utter.
To such a person I want to glory.
For myself, I only want to glory in my weaknesses.
Would I really want to boast then I would not be a fool ;
after all, I would be telling the truth.
But I refrain from that ;
i don’t want anyone to attribute to me more
than what he can see or hear from me.
Also, there is
– for otherwise these extraordinary revelations might
might make me conceited –
also there is a thorn stuck in my flesh,
like a messenger from Satan to whip me.
Up to three times I have cried out to the Lord
that he would depart from me.
But the Lord answered me :
“You have enough of my grace.
“Strength becomes perfect precisely in weakness.”
So I will glory in my weaknesses most of all.
Then Christ’s strength will dwell in me.
Therefore, for Christ’s sake I gladly suffer
weakness, reproach, distress, persecution and distress.
For when I am weak,
then I am strong.

INTERLUDIUM        Ps. 34(33), 8-9, 10-11, 12-13

Observe and notice how gracious the Lord is.

The angel of God puts a bulwark around them,
to protect every one who fears God.
Take heed and notice how gracious the Lord is,
happy is he who seeks salvation with Him.

Reverence the Lord, ye who are consecrated to Him,
for he who honours Him never suffers want.
The rich have become poor and needy,
who go to the Lord never lack anything.

Come, children, listen to what I say to you ;
i teach you to fear the Lord.
Who is there with you who loves life
and desires days of prosperity ?

Do not worry about tomorrow’s day.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Matthew

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples :
“No one can serve two masters :
he shall hate the one and love the other ,
or love the one and despise the other.
“You cannot serve God AND mammon.
“Therefore I say to you :
Be not anxious for thy life,
what thou shalt eat or what thou shalt drink,
nor for thy body,
what thou shalt put on.
“Is not life more than food
and the body no more than the clothing?
“Observe the birds in the sky :
they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns,
but your heavenly Father feeds them.
“Are you not then much more than they?
“Besides, which of you is able
with all his worries add one cubit to his life’s journey?
“And what dost thou worry about clothing?
“Look at the lilies in the field : how they grow.
“They neither labour nor spin.
“Yet I say unto thee :
Even Solomon in all his splendour
was not clothed like one of them.
“Now if God were the field crop ,
which stands there today
and thrown into the furnace tomorrow
dresses it like that ,
how much more than you, little believers ?
“So do not worry about the question :
what shall we eat
or what shall we drink
or what shall we wear?
“For all these the heathen pursue.
“Your heavenly Father knows well that ye need all these things.
“But seek first the kingdom and its righteousness :
then all these things shall be given unto thee.
“Therefore do not worry for the day of tomorrow,
for the day of tomorrow takes care of itself.
“Every day has enough of its own suffering.”

On caring for the common home

28. Clean drinking water is an issue of primary importance because it is
indispensable for human life and to maintain the ecosystems of land and
water. Freshwater sources supply the sectors of
healthcare, agriculture and industry. The availability of water has
remained relatively constant for a long time, but now in many places the
demand exceeds sustainable supply with serious short- and
long term. Large cities, which depend on important water resources
suffer from periods of lack of this resource,
which at critical moments is not always adequately and impartially
managed. The poverty of public water for all is known
especially in Africa, where large parts of the population do not have access
to safe drinking water or suffer from periods of drought that complicate
food production difficult. In some countries, there are regions with an
abundance of water, while others suffer from severe shortages.
