Consideration

Chronologically, Hosea follows Amos. He is his younger ally, also ministering in the Northern Kingdom. But his imagery is very different from that of Amos. He expresses the people’s unfaithfulness to Yahweh in terms of marital infidelity and adultery. This was not, however, far-fetched, as the Canaanite religion was strongly characterised by sexuality and fertility rites. At the same time, Hosea speaks of enduring love despite unfaithfulness. We have an example of this today.

I will take you as my bride, for ever.

“My unfaithful bride,
soon I will draw her back to Me,

a synagogue leader came up to Him,
fell at His feet and said:
‘My daughter has just died:
but come and lay your hand on her,
and she will live again.’
Jesus got up and went with him,
accompanied by his disciples.
Suddenly, a woman approached Him from behind,
who had been suffering from a haemorrhage for twelve years,
and touched the hem of His cloak.
For she said to herself:
“If I can only touch his cloak,
I shall be healed.”
But Jesus turned round,
and when He saw her, He said:
“Take heart, daughter;
your faith has healed you.”
And from that moment the woman was healed.
When Jesus entered the ruler’s house
and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion,
He said:
“Go away,
for the girl has not died but is asleep.”
But they laughed at Him.
When all those people had been sent out,
He went in,
took her by the hand,
and the girl got up.
The story of this spread throughout the whole region.

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijke huis

167. De topconferentie over de aarde die in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro werd
gehouden dient vermeld te worden. Daar is verklaard dat “de mensen in het
middelpunt staan van de zorg betreffende de duurzame ontwikkeling”.126 De
inhoud van de Verklaring van Stockholm (1972) hernemend, heeft Rio
onder andere de internationale samenwerking bekrachtigd inzake de zorg
voor het ecosysteem van de hele aarde, de verplichting dat wie vervuilt,
daarvoor financieel verantwoordelijk is en de plicht om het effect van ieder
werk of project op het milieu te toetsen. Zij heeft als doel voorgesteld de
concentraties broeikasgas in de atmosfeer te stabiliseren om de tendens van
wereldwijde opwarming terug te dringen. Zij heeft ook een agenda met een
actieprogramma en een verdrag over de biodiversiteit uitgewerkt en principes
vastgelegd inzake de bossen. Hoewel die top voor zijn tijd werkelijk
innovatief en profetisch was, zijn de afspraken maar beperkt verwezenlijkt,
omdat er geen adequaat mechanisme van controle, periodiek onderzoek en
sanctie op plichtsverzuim was vastgesteld. De geformuleerde principes blijven
vragen om doeltreffende en snelle wegen voor een concrete realisatie.

167. Cabe mencionar la Cumbre de la Tierra celebrada en Río de Janeiro en 1992.
Allí se declaró que «las personas ocupan el
centro de la preocupación por el desarrollo sostenible».126 Retomando el

Introduction

The start of the summer holidays
is, for many, a time to catch their breath.
The time pressures of the past school and working year
finally give way to some relaxation.
On this first Sunday of the holidays,
Jesus invites us to come to Him
and find rest and relief in Him.
Let us open our hearts to the inner peace
that He wishes to give us.

Behold, your King is coming to you. He is humble.

167. The Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 should be mentioned. It was declared there that “people are at the centre of concern for sustainable development”. OVERWEGING
Thomas was een eerlijk en kritisch mens. Hij kende de vreugde de Heer te herkennen. Hij aarzelt op dat moment dan ook om zijn ongelijk toe te geven. Zijn antwoord op de ontmoeting met de verrezen Christus is ook een geloofsbelijdenis: ‘Mijn Heer en mijn God!’ Deze woorden mogen wij tot de onze maken. Ook in moeilijke omstandigheden zullen wij door dit eenvoudige gebed kracht vinden om te blijven geloven in Hem die wij hebben herkend.

EERSTE LEZING             Ef. 2, 19-22

Gebouwd op het fundament van de apostelen.

Mijn Heer en mijn God !

Uit het heilig evangelie van onze Heer Jezus Christus volgens
Johannes
Thomas, een van de twaalf, ook Didymus genaamd
was niet bij de leerlingen toen Jezus kwam.
De anderen vertelden hem:
“Wij hebben de Heer gezien.”
Maar hij antwoordde:
,,Als ik niet in zijn handen het teken van de nagelen zie,
en mijn vinger in de plaats van de nagelen kan steken,
en mijn hand in zijn zijde leggen,
zal ik het niet geloven.”
Acht dagen later waren zijn leerlingen weer in het huis bijeen,
en nu was Thomas er bij.
Hoewel de deuren gesloten waren kwam Jezus binnen,
ging in hun midden staan en zei:
“Vrede zij u.”
Vervolgens zei Hij tot Thomas:
,,Kom hier met uw vinger en bezie mijn handen.
,,Steek uw hand uit en leg die in mijn zijde
en wees niet langer ongelovig maar gelovig.”
Toen riep Thomas uit:
“Mijn Heer en mijn God!”
Toen zei Jezus tot hem:
“Omdat ge Mij gezien hebt gelooft ge?
“Zalig die niet gezien en toch geloofd hebben.”

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijk huis

165. Wij weten dat de technologie die gebaseerd is op zeer vervuilende
fossiele brandstoffen, vooral kolen, maar ook olie en in mindere mate gas,
geleidelijk en zonder aarzelen moet worden vervangen. In afwachting van
een brede ontwikkeling van hernieuwbare energie, die al begonnen zou
moeten zijn, is het gewettigd te kiezen voor het minst schadelijke alternatief
of zijn toevlucht te nemen tot overgangsoplossingen. In de internationale
gemeenschap komt men echter niet tot adequate overeenkomsten omtrent
de verantwoordelijkheid van degenen die de grootste kosten van de overgang
op energiegebied moeten dragen. In de laatste decennia hebben milieukwesties
aanleiding gegeven tot een breed publiek debat, dat in de maatschappij ruimte
heeft doen ontstaan voor een opmerkelijk engagement en

geschiedenis, het te wensen is dat de mensheid aan begin van de 21ste eeuw
de geschiedenis kan ingaan vanwege het feit dat het edelmoedig de eigen
zware verantwoordelijkheden op zich heeft genomen.

¿Puedo aprovechar esta ocasión para llamar su atención sobre
la lectura diaria del Evangelio?

Esta invitación tiene por objeto hacerle partícipe de la alegría
del Evangelio. Todos, sin excepción,
pueden experimentar esa alegría abriendo su corazón
a la acción sanadora de la Palabra de Dios.

CONSIDERACIÓN
Tomás era una persona honesta y crítica. Conocía la alegría de reconocer al Señor. Por eso, en ese momento, duda en admitir que se ha equivocado. Su respuesta al encuentro con Cristo resucitado es también una profesión de fe:«¡Señor mío y Dios mío!». Podemos hacer nuestras estas palabras. Incluso en circunstancias difíciles, encontraremos en esta sencilla oración la fuerza para seguir creyendo en Aquel a quien hemos reconocido.

PRIMERA LECTURA                  Ef . 2, 19-22

Edificados sobre el fundamento de los apóstoles.

De la carta del santo apóstol Pablo a los efesios
Hermanos y hermanas,

Ya no sois extranjeros ni forasteros,
sino conciudadanos de los santos y miembros de la familia de Dios,
edificados sobre el fundamento de los apóstoles y profetas,
siendo Cristo Jesús mismo la piedra angular,
que mantiene unida toda la construcción.
En Él, la edificación crece hasta convertirse en un templo santo en el Señor.

¡Señor mío y Dios mío!

Del santo Evangelio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo según
Juan
Tomás, uno de los doce, llamado también Dídimo,
no estaba con los discípulos cuando llegó Jesús.
Los demás le dijeron:
«Hemos visto al Señor».
Pero él respondió:
«Si no veo en sus manos la marca de los clavos,
y no meto mi dedo en el lugar de los clavos,
y no pongo mi mano en su costado,
no lo creeré».
Ocho días después, sus discípulos estaban de nuevo reunidos en la casa,
y esta vez Tomás estaba con ellos.
Aunque las puertas estaban cerradas, Jesús entró,
se puso en medio de ellos y dijo:
«La paz sea con vosotros».
A continuación, le dijo a Tomás:
«Acércate con tu dedo y mira mis manos.
Extiende tu mano y ponla en mi costado,
y no seas ya incrédulo, sino creyente».
Entonces Tomás exclamó:
«¡Señor mío y Dios mío!»
Entonces Jesús le dijo:
«¿Porque me has visto, crees?
«Bienaventurados los que no han visto y, sin embargo, han creído».

Sobre el cuidado de la casa común

165. Sabemos que la tecnología basada en combustibles fósiles muy contaminantes,
sobre todo el carbón, pero también el petróleo y, en menor medida, el gas,
debe ser sustituida de forma gradual y sin vacilaciones. A la espera de un desarrollo
generalizado de las energías renovables, que ya debería haber comenzado, está
justificado optar por la alternativa menos perjudicial o recurrir a soluciones de
transición. Sin embargo, en la comunidad internacional
no se alcanzan acuerdos adecuados sobre
la responsabilidad de quienes deben asumir los mayores costes de la transición
en el ámbito energético. En las últimas décadas, las cuestiones medioambientales
han dado lugar a un amplio debate público, que ha creado en la sociedad
un espacio para un compromiso notable y
una dedicación generosa. La política y la industria responden con lentitud y están
lejos de estar a la altura de los retos globales. En este sentido, se puede
decir que, mientras que la humanidad de la era postindustrial quizá
será recordada como una de las más irresponsables de la
historia, es de desear que la humanidad, a principios del siglo XXI,
pase a la historia por el hecho de haber asumido generosamente sus propias
graves responsabilidades.

CONSIDERATION
Thomas was an honest and sceptical man. He knew the joy of recognising the Lord. At that moment, therefore, he hesitates to admit he was wrong. His response to the encounter with the risen Christ is also a profession of faith:‘My Lord and my God!’ We may make these words our own. Even in difficult circumstances, through this simple prayer we shall find the strength to continue believing in Him whom we have recognised.

Built on the foundation of the apostles.

From the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians
Brothers and sisters,

You are no longer strangers and exiles,
but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God’s household,
built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets,

In him it grows into a holy temple in the Lord.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John
Thomas, one of the Twelve, also called Didymus,
was not with the disciples when Jesus came.
The others told him:
‘We have seen the Lord.’
But he replied:
‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands,
and put my finger into the nail marks,
and place my hand into his side,
I will not believe.’
Eight days later, his disciples were gathered together in the house again,
and this time Thomas was with them.
Although the doors were locked, Jesus came in,
stood among them and said:
“Peace be with you.”
Then He said to Thomas:
“Come here with your finger and see my hands.
“Stretch out your hand and place it in my side,
and do not be unbelieving any longer, but believe.”
Then Thomas exclaimed:
“My Lord and my God!”
Then Jesus said to him:
“Because you have seen Me, do you believe?
“Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

On Care for Our Common Home

165. We know that technology based on highly polluting
fossil fuels – particularly coal, but also oil and, to a lesser extent, gas –
must be phased out gradually and without hesitation. Pending the
widespread development of renewable energy – which ought already to have
begun – it is legitimate to opt for the least harmful alternative
or to resort to transitional solutions. However, within the international
community, no adequate agreements have been reached regarding
the responsibility of those who must bear the greatest costs of the transition
in the energy sector. In recent decades, environmental issues have
sparked a wide-ranging public debate, which has created space within
society for a remarkable commitment and
generous dedication. Politics and industry are slow to respond and are
far from being up to the task of meeting global challenges. In this sense,
one could say that, whilst humanity in the post-industrial era may
be remembered as one of the most irresponsible in
history, it is to be hoped that humanity at the beginning of the 21st century
will go down in history for having generously taken on its own
heavy responsibilities.
