Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Openingswoord
Vandaag sluiten we de kersttijd af
met een opvallende gebeurtenis
aan het begin van het openbare leven van Jezus.
Hij trekt weg uit zijn vaderstad
en laat zich in de rivier de Jordaan dopen door Johannes de Doper.
Op dat moment wordt Hij zich bewust van wie Hij is
en wat Hem te doen staat in zijn leven.
Het feest van de doop van de Heer
is ook een feest van de herinnering aan onze eigen doop.
Een uitgelezen moment om stil te staan
bij wat het betekent om als gedoopt mens door het leven te gaan.
EERSTE LEZING Jes. 55, 1-11
Komt naar het water en luistert, en gij zult leven.
Uit de profeet Jesaja
Zo spreekt God de Heer:
“Komt naar het water, gij allen die dorst lijdt!
“Ook gij die geen geld hebt, komt toch.
“Komt kopen,
geniet zonder geld
en zonder te betalen.
“Komt kopen wijn en melk.
“Wat geeft gij uw geld voor iets dat geen brood is ?
“Wat geeft gij uw arbeid voor iets dat niet voedt ?
“Luistert, luistert naar Mij:
dan eet gij wat goed is,
dan verzadigt gij u aan heerlijke spijs.
“Neigt uw oor en komt naar Mij
en luistert,
en gij zult leven.
“Een blijvend verbond ga Ik sluiten met u;
de gunst, aan David verleend, verloochen Ik niet.
“Hem heb Ik gemaakt tot getuige voor de volkeren,
tot vorst en gebieder over de naties.
“Waarlijk, een volk zult gij roepen dat gij niet kent
en een volk dat u niet kent, snelt naar u toe
omwille van Israëls Heilige die u verheerlijkt.
“Zoekt de Heer nu Hij zich laat vinden,
roept Hem aan nu Hij nabij is.
“De ongerechtige moet zijn weg verlaten,
de zondaar zijn gedachten;
hij moet naar de Heer terugkeren
– de Heer zal zich erbarmen –
terug naar onze God, die altijd wil vergeven.
“Uw gedachten zijn nu eenmaal niet mijn gedachten,
mijn wegen niet uw wegen
– zo luidt de godsspraak van de Heer -,
maar zoals de hemel hoog boven de aarde is,
zo hoog gaan mijn wegen uw wegen te boven
en mijn gedachten uw gedachten.
“Zoals de regen en de sneeuw uit de hemel vallen
en daar pas terugkeren
wanneer zij de aarde hebben gedrenkt,
haar hebben bevrucht, zodat zij groen wordt,
wanneer zij het zaad aan de zaaier hebben gegeven
en het brood aan de eter,
zo zal het ook gaan met het woord
dat komt uit mijn mond:
het keert niet vruchteloos naar Mij terug;
het keert pas weer
wanneer het mijn wil volbracht heeft
en zijn zending heeft vervuld.”

TWEEDE LEZING 1 Joh. 5, 1-9
De Geest, het water en het bloed.
Uit de eerste brief van de heilige apostel Johannes
Vrienden,
Iedereen die gelooft dat Jezus de verlosser is,
is een kind van God.
Welnu, wie de vader liefheeft,
bemint ook het kind.
Willen wij God liefhebben en zijn geboden onderhouden,
dan moeten wij ook Gods kinderen liefhebben.
Dat is onze maatstaf.
God beminnen wil zeggen:
zijn geboden onderhouden,
en zijn geboden zijn niet moeilijk te onderhouden
want ieder die uit God geboren is,
overwint de wereld.
En het wapen waarmee wij de wereld overwinnen,
is geen ander dan ons geloof.
Niemand kan de wereld overwinnen dan hij die gelooft
dat Jezus de Zoon van God is.
Hij is het die gekomen is met water en bloed,
Jezus Christus.
Hij is gekomen, niet door water alleen
maar door water en bloed.
De Geest betuigt het,
omdat de Geest de waarheid is.
Want er zijn drie getuigen,
de Geest,
het water
en het bloed,
en deze drie stemmen overeen.
Als wij het getuigenis van mensen aannemen,
dan zeker dat van God,
dat zoveel groter gezag heeft;
God zelf waarborgt dit getuigenis
dat Hij heeft afgelegd aangaande zijn Zoon.

Johannes zag Jezus naar zich toekomen en zei:
Zie het Lam Gods dat de zonde van de wereld wegneemt.

EVANGELIE Mc. 1, 7-11
Gij zijt mijn Zoon, mijn veelgeliefde; in U heb Ik welbehagen.
Uit het heilig evangelie van onze Heer Jezus Christus volgens
Marcus
In die tijd predikte Johannes:
“Na mij komt die sterker is dan ik,
en ik ben niet waardig mij te bukken
en de riem van zijn sandalen los te maken.
“Ik heb u gedoopt met water
maar Hij zal u dopen met de heilige Geest.”
In die tijd vertrok Jezus uit Nazaret in Galilea
en liet zich in de Jordaan door Johannes dopen.
En op hetzelfde ogenblik dat Hij uit het water opsteeg,
zag Hij de hemel openscheuren
en de Geest als een duif op zich neerdalen.
En er kwam een stem uit de hemel:
“Gij zijt mijn Zoon,
mijn veelgeliefde;
in U heb IK welbehagen.”

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijk huis
160. Wat voor soort wereld willen wij doorgeven aan hen die na ons zullen komen, aan de kinderen die aan het opgroeien zijn? Deze vraag betreft niet alleen het milieu afzonderlijk, omdat zij niet opgesplitst kan worden gesteld. Wanneer wij ons de vraag willen stellen omtrent de wereld die wij willen achterlaten, verwijzen wij vooral naar de algemene doelgerichtheid, de zin, de waarden ervan. Als in onze ecologische zorgen deze fundamentele vraag niet doorklinkt, geloof ik niet dat zij belangrijke effecten kunnen hebben. Maar als deze vraag moedig wordt gesteld, dan brengt zij ons onherroepelijk tot andere zeer directe vragen. Met wat voor doel gaan wij door deze wereld? Waartoe zijn wij in dit leven gekomen? Met wat voor doel werken en strijden wij? Waarom heeft deze aarde ons nodig? Daarom is het niet meer voldoende dat wij ons zorgen moeten maken voor de toekomstige generaties. Wij moeten ons realiseren dat de waardigheid van onszelf op het spel staat. Wij zijn de eerste belanghebbenden om een planeet door te geven die bewoonbaar is voor de mensheid die na ons zal komen. Het is een drama voor onszelf, omdat dit verwijst naar de betekenis van onze doorgang op deze aarde.

Monday – Baptism of the Lord
Invitation
May I draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants you to share in the joy
of the gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening his heart
for the healing effect of God’s word.

Opening word
Today we close the Christmas time
with a striking event
at the beginning of the public life of Jesus.
He leaves his father city
and is baptized in the river Jordan by John the Baptist.
At that moment He becomes aware of who He is
and what to do in his life.
The feast of the baptism of the Lord
is also a celebration of the memory of our own baptism.
An exquisite moment to stand still
at what it means to go through life as a baptized person.
FIRST READING Is. 55, 1-11
Come to the water and listen, and you shall live.
From the prophet Isaiah
This is how God the Lord speaks :
“Come to the water, all of you who are thirsty!
“Even you who have no money, come anyway.
“Come and buy,
enjoy without money
and without paying.
“Comes to buy wine and milk.
“What do you give your money for something that’s not bread?
“What do you give your labor for something that doesn’t feed?
“Listen, listen to me.
then you eat what is good,
then saturate yourself with delicious food.
“Tend your ear and come to Me
and listen,
and thou shalt live.
“I am going to make a lasting covenant with you;
the favor granted to David I will not deny.
“I have made him a witness for the nations.
and through him I showed them my power.
Now you will summon foreign nations;
at one time they did not know you,
but now they will come running to join you!

The Spirit, the water and the blood.
From the first letter of the holy apostle John
Friends,
Anyone who believes that Jesus is the Savior,
is a child of God.
Well, he who loves the father,
also loves the child.
We want to love God and keep His commandments,
then we must also love God’s children.
That is our yardstick.
To love God means:
keeping his commandments,
and its commandments are not difficult to maintain
for all who are born of God,
conquers the world.
And the weapon with which we conquer the world,
is none other than our faith.
No one can conquer the world but he who believes
that Jesus is the Son of God.
It is He who came with water and blood,
Jesus Christ.
He came, not by water alone
but through water and blood.
The Spirit proclaims it,
because the Spirit is the truth.
Because there are three witnesses,
the Spirit,
the water
and the blood,
and these three correspond.
If we accept people’s testimony,
then surely that of God,
that has so much greater authority;
God Himself guarantees this testimony
that He has laid down concerning His Son.

At that time Johannes preached:
“After me comes one who is stronger than me,
and I’m not worthy to stoop down.
and loosen the strap on his sandals.
“I have baptized you with water
but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
At that time Jesus left Nazareth in Galilee
and was baptized by John in the Jordaan.
And at the same time He ascended out of the water,
He saw the sky tear open
and the Spirit descends upon itself like a dove.
And a voice came from heaven:
“Thou art my Son,
my beloved;
in you I am well pleased.”

About caring for the common house
160. What kind of world do we want to pass on to those who will come after us, to the children who are growing up? This question does not only concern the environment individually, because it cannot be asked in isolation. When we want to ask ourselves the question about the world we want to leave behind, we refer mainly to its overall purpose, its meaning, its values. If our ecological concerns do not reflect this fundamental question, I do not believe they can have significant effects. But if this question is boldly asked, it irrevocably leads us to other very direct questions. For what purpose are we going through this world? To what purpose did we come into this life? For what purpose do we work and struggle? Why does this earth need us? Therefore, it is no longer enough for us to worry about future generations. We must realise that our own dignity is at stake. We are the first stakeholders to pass on a planet that is habitable for the humanity that will come after us. It is a tragedy for ourselves because it refers to the meaning of our passage on this earth.
