Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Het godsvolk kreeg op de Sinaï deze wet voorgehouden: iedere vijftig jaar moet het onrecht dat ingeslopen is, worden rechtgezet. De zwakheid van de mens vraagt immers om herstel. Dat betekent dat we de mazen van het netwerk van onze relaties dichtnaaien met oprechte goedheid, opdat iedereen kan herademen en jubelen om het heil dat God ons bereidt.
EERSTE LEZING Lev. 25. 1. 8-17
In het vijftigste jaar wordt iedereen hersteld
in zijn vroeger bezit.
God sprak tot Mozes op de berg Sinaï:
“Na verloop van zeven sabbatjaren, zevenmaal zeven jaar,
tezamen negenenveertig jaar,
moet gij op de dag van verzoening,
de tiende dag van de zevende maand,
luid de bazuin laten klinken.
In heel uw land moet gij de bazuin laten schallen.
Dat vijftigste jaar moet een heilig jaar voor u zijn:
dan moet ge in het land afkondigen
dat alle bewoners hun slaven vrijlaten.
Het moet een jubeljaar voor u zijn,
iedereen wordt hersteld in zijn vroeger bezit
en keert terug naar zijn familie.
Het vijftigste jaar is een jubeljaar voor u;
ge moogt dan niet zaaien, de nagroei niet oogsten
en de druiven van uw ongesnoeide wijngaard niet plukken,
want het is het jubeljaar; dat moet heilig voor u zijn.
Alleen wat het land uit zichzelf voortbrengt, moogt ge eten.
In het jubeljaar
zal iedereen in zijn vroeger bezit worden hersteld.
Wanneer gij een stuk grond verkoopt aan een volksgenoot
of grond van hem koopt, moogt ge elkaar niet benadelen.
Koopt gij grond van een volksgenoot,
dan moet ge bij het vaststellen van de prijs
rekening houden met het aantal jaren sinds het laatste jubeljaar.
En hij moet de verkoopprijs berekenen
naar het aantal jaren, dat het nog oogst opbrengt.
De prijs zal hoger zijn, als er nog veel jaren komen,
en lager, als er weinig jaren moeten verstrijken,
want hij verkoopt u een aantal oogstjaren.
Benadeel uw volksgenoot niet;
heb eerbied voor uw God.
Ik ben de HEER, uw God.”

Geef dat de volken U eren, o God,
dat alle volken U eren !
God, wees ons barmhartig en zegen ons,
toon ons het licht van uw aanschijn ;
opdat men op aarde uw wegen mag kennen,

EVANGELIE Mt. 14, 1-12
Herodes gaf opdracht Johannes te onthoofden.
Zijn leerlingen gingen het aan Jezus melden.
In die tijd begon Jezus’ vermaardheid
tot de viervorst Herodes door te dringen,
en hij zei daarom tot zijn hovelingen:
“Dat moet Johannes de Doper zijn; hij is uit de doden opgestaan;
vandaar dat die wonderkrachten in hem werken.”
Want omwille van Herodias, de vrouw van zijn broer Filippus,
had Herodes Johannes laten grijpen
en geboeid in de gevangenis geworpen,
omdat Johannes tot hem gezegd had:
Het is u niet geoorloofd haar als vrouw te hebben.
Daarom had Herodes hem eigenlijk ter dood willen brengen,
maar hij was hiervoor teruggeschrokken
omdat het volk Johannes voor een profeet hield.
Toen de dochter van Herodias echter
op de verjaardag van Herodes voor het gezelschap danste,
beviel zij hem zozeer dat hij een eed zwoer
haar alles te zullen geven wat zij zou vragen.
Haar moeder had haar het antwoord ingescherpt
en daarom zei ze:
“Geef mij, hier nog, op een schotel
het hoofd van Johannes de Doper.”
Ofschoon dit de koning aan zijn hart ging wilde hij toch,
ook wegens zijn tafelgenoten, zijn eed gestand doen
en hij gelastte het te geven.
Hij gaf daarom opdracht
Johannes in de gevangenis te onthoofden.
Zijn hoofd werd op een schotel binnengebracht
en aan het meisje gegeven dat het aan haar moeder bracht.
Zijn leerlingen kwamen het lijk halen en begroeven het;
Daarna gingen zij het aan Jezus melden.

5. De heilige Johannes Paulus II heeft zich met groeiende belangstelling met dit thema beziggehouden. In zijn eerste encycliek merkte hij op “De mens lijkt vaak geen andere betekenis van zijn natuurlijke omgeving waar te nemen dan die welke dient voor de doeleinden van gebruik en verbruik”. Vervolgens nodigde hij uit tot een globale ecologische bekering. Tegelijkertijd merkte hij echter op dat er weinig engagement is om “de morele voorwaarden voor een geloofwaardige menselijke ecologie te waarborgen”. De verwoesting van het menselijk milieu is iets zeer ernstigs, niet alleen omdat God de wereld aan de mens heeft toevertrouwd, maar omdat het menselijk leven zelf een gave is die tegen de verschillende vormen van verval moet worden beschermd. Ieder streven om voor de wereld te zorgen en haar te verbeteren vraagt om een diepgaande verandering van “de levensstijl, van de productie- en consumptiemodellen, van de gevestigde machtsstructuren die nu de maatschappijen beheersen”. Een authentieke menselijke ontwikkeling heeft een moreel karakter en veronderstelt een volledig respect voor de menselijke persoon, maar moet ook aandacht besteden aan de wereld van de natuur en “rekening houden met de natuur van ieder wezen en met het onderlinge verband in een geordend systeem”. Daarom moet het vermogen van de mens om de werkelijkheid te veranderen zich ontwikkelen op basis van de eerste oorspronkelijke gave van de dingen door God.

Consideration
At Sinai, the people of God were told this law: every fifty years, the injustices that have crept in must be put right. After all, the weakness of mankind demands restoration. That means sewing together the meshes of the network of our relationships with sincere goodness, so that everyone can breathe again and rejoice in the salvation that God is preparing for us.
FIRST READING Lev. 25. 1. 8-17
In the fiftieth year everyone is restored
to his former property.
From the book of Leviticus
God spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai:
“After the lapse of seven Sabbath years, seven times seven years,
together forty-nine years,
you are to observe the day of atonement,
the tenth day of the seventh month,
let the trumpet sound loudly.
In all thy land thou shalt sound the trumpet.
That fiftieth year shall be a holy year for you:
Then shall ye proclaim in the land
that all the inhabitants shall release their slaves.
It must be a jubilee year for you,
everyone is restored to his former property
and returns to his family.
The fiftieth year is a jubilee year for you;
you may not sow then, nor reap the aftergrowth
and pluck not the grapes of thy unpruned vineyard,
for it is the year of jubilee; it shall be holy unto you.
Only what the land itself brings forth may you eat.
In the year of jubilee

When you sell a piece of land to a fellow worker

In those days Jesus’ fame began
to dawn on the prince Herod,
and he said to his courtiers:
“That must be John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead;
hence these miraculous powers work in him.”
For because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip,
Herod had John seized
and thrown into prison in chains,
because John had said to him:
It is not lawful for you to have her as your wife.
That is why Herod had wanted to put him to death,
but he was afraid to do so
because the people took John for a prophet.
When, however, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company on Herod’s birthday,
she pleased him so much that he swore an oath
to give her anything she asked for.
Her mother had hinted at the answer
and so she said:
“Give me, here, on a plate
the head of John the Baptist.”
Although this was close to the king’s heart, he wanted to give it to her,
and because of his companions, he wanted to keep his oath
and he ordered it to be given.
He therefore ordered John to be beheaded in prison.
His head was brought in on a platter
and given to the girl who brought it to her mother.
His disciples came and took the body and buried it;
Then they went and reported it to Jesus.

5. St. John Paul II has addressed this theme with increasing interest. In his first encyclical, he observed that “Man often seems to perceive no other significance of his natural environment than that which serves the purposes of use and consumption”. He then called for a global ecological conversion. At the same time, however, he noted that there is little commitment to “ensuring the moral conditions for a credible human ecology”. The destruction of the human environment is something very serious, not only because God entrusted the world to man, but because human life itself is a gift that must be protected from the various forms of decay. Any effort to care for and improve the world requires a profound change in “lifestyles, in production and consumption models, in the established power structures that now dominate societies”. Authentic human development has a moral character and presupposes full respect for the human person, but it must also pay attention to the world of nature and “take into account the nature of each being and its interrelationship in an ordered system”. Therefore, man’s ability to change reality must develop on the basis of the first original gift of things by God.
