Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

OVERWEGING
Numeri is het boek der getallen, zo genoemd omwille van de twee volkstellingen die er in voorkomen, bij het begin van de tocht door de woestijn, en bij het einde. We lezen vandaag uit het tweede deel, het telkens terugkerend thema van het morrende volk. We belichten de figuur Mozes. Net als naar Elia kijkt het Oude Testament naar Mozes op als naar een der grootsten. Net als Elia kan hij diep ontmoedigd raken en naar de dood verlangen. Juist dat is voor ons bemoedigend, omdat het zo herkenbaar is. Gaat het ook in ons leven niet met vallen en opstaan?
EERSTE LEZING Num. 11, 4b-15
Ik kan de last van heel dat volk niet alleen dragen.
In die dagen begonnen de Israëlieten opnieuw te jammeren.
Ze zeiden:
“Wie kan ons aan vlees helpen!
Wij hebben heimwee naar de vis die wij in Egypte
voor niets te eten kregen, naar de komkommers en de meloenen,
naar de prei, de uien en het knoflook.
Wij drogen uit! Er is niets!
Wij krijgen alleen maar manna te zien.”
Het manna geleek op korianderzaad
en zag eruit als balsemhars.
Het volk verspreidde zich om het bijeen te rapen.
Dan maalden zij het met een handmolen
of stampten het fijn in een vijzel.
Ze kookten het in een pot en maakten er koeken van,
zodat het smaakte als oliegebak.
Met de dauw viel ‘s nachts ook het manna op het kamp neer.
Toen Mozes hoorde, hoe het volk, familie voor familie,
bij de ingang van de tenten zat te jammeren,
en toen de HEER in hevige toorn ontstak, werd hij ontstemd.
Hij vroeg de HEER:
“Waarom doet Gij uw dienaar dit verdriet aan?
Zijt Gij mij zo weinig genegen,
dat Gij mij de last van heel dat volk laat dragen?
Het lijkt wel of ik van heel dat volk zwanger ben geweest
en het ter wereld heb gebracht, dat Gij mij zegt:
Draag het aan uw hart, zoals een voedster een zuigeling draagt,
en dat Gij mij beveelt
het naar het land te brengen
dat Gij zijn vaderen onder ede beloofd hebt.
Waar haal ik vlees vandaan voor heel dat volk?
Het jammert tegen mij: Geef ons toch vlees te eten!
Ik kan de lasten van heel dat volk niet alleen dragen.
Het is mij te zwaar!
Indien Gij zo met mij blijft doen,
dood mij dan maar, als Gij mij genadig wilt zijn.
Dan hoef ik mijn ellende niet langer te zien.”

Huldigt de Heer, onze sterkte !
Israël heeft mijn stem niet gehoord, zegt de Heer,
mijn volk gehoorzaamde niet.
Toen liet ik hen los met hun hard gemoed,
zij gingen hun eigen wegen.
Ach, luisterde nu mijn volk maar naar Mij,
bewandelde Israël nu maar mijn paden ;
dan bracht Ik hun vijanden aanstonds ten val
en zou Ik mijn hand keren tegen hun kwellers.
Dan zouden Gods vijanden hen naar de mond zien
en zo zou het blijven voor immer.
Dan zou Ik mijn volk met tarwebloem voeden,
met honing verzadigen uit de rots.

Alleluia.
Ik ben het licht der wereld, zegt de Heer ;
wie Mij volgt zal het licht des levens bezitten.

EVANGELIE Mt. 14, 13-21
Nadat Jezus de zegen had uitgesproken brak Hij de broden.
Toen Jezus het bericht van de moord op Johannes vernomen had voer Hij vandaar in een boot weg naar een eenzame plaats om alleen te zijn.
Maar het gerucht hiervan drong tot het volk door
en het ging Hem te voet uit hun steden achterna.
Toen Hij bij zijn landing dan ook een grote menigte zag
kreeg Hij diep medelijden met hen, en Hij genas hun zieken.
Tegen het vallen van de avond
kwamen zijn leerlingen naar Hem toe en zeiden :
“Deze plek is eenzaam en het is al laat op de dag.
“Stuur dus het volk weg om in de dorpen eten te gaan kopen.”
“Het is niet nodig dat zij weggaan
– zei Jezus hun -, geeft gij hun maar te eten.”
Doch zij antwoordden :
“Wij hebben hier niet meer dan vijf broden en twee vissen.”
Waarop Jezus sprak: “Brengt die dan hier.”
En Hij gaf opdracht dat het volk zich zou neerzetten op het gras.
Hij nam de vijf broden en de twee vissen,
sloeg de ogen ten hemel,
en nadat Hij de zegen had uitgesproken
brak Hij de broden, die Hij aan zijn leerlingen gaf
en de leerlingen gaven ze weer aan het volk.
Allen aten tot ze verzadigd waren
en aan overgebleven brokken
haalde men nog twaalf volle korven op.
Het waren ongeveer vijfduizend mannen die hadden gegeten,
vrouwen en kinderen niet meegerekend.

Deze bijdragen van de pausen omvatten de reflectie van talloze wetenschappers, filosofen, theologen en maatschappelijke organisaties die het denken van de Kerk betreffende deze kwesties hebben verrijkt. Wij kunnen echter niet eraan voorbijgaan dat ook buiten de katholieke Kerk andere Kerken en christelijke gemeenschappen – evenals andere religies – een diepe bezorgdheid en kostbare reflectie hebben ontwikkeld aangaande deze thema’s die ons allen ter harte gaan. Om slechts een bijzonder veelbetekenend voorbeeld te noemen wil ik in het kort een gedeelte van de bijdrage hernemen van onze geliefde Oecumenische Patriarch Bartholomeüs, met wie wij de hoop op een volle kerkelijke eenheid delen.

Consideration
Numbers is the book of numbers, so called because of the two censuses that occur in it, at the beginning of the journey through the desert, and at the end. Today we read from the second part, the recurring theme of the moribund people. We highlight the figure of Moses. Like Elijah, the Old Testament looks up to Moses as one of the greatest. Like Elijah, he can become deeply discouraged and long for death. This is particularly encouraging for us because it is so recognisable. Does it not also happen in our lives with ups and downs?
FIRST READING Num. 11, 4b-15
I cannot bear the burden of all these people by myself.
From the book of Numbers
In those days the Israelites began to wail again.
They said:
“Who can help us with meat!
We are homesick for the fish we ate for free in Egypt, the cucumbers and melons,
the leeks and onions and garlic.
We are drying out! There is nothing!
All we see is manna.
The manna was like coriander seed
and looked like balsam resin.
The people dispersed to gather it.
Then they ground it with a hand mill
or pound it in a mortar.
They boiled it in a pot and made cakes out of it,
so it tasted like oil cake.
With the dew, the manna also fell down upon the camp at night.
When Moses heard how the people, family by family,
were wailing at the entrance of the tents,
And when the LORD was angry, he was displeased.
He asked the LORD:
“Why dost Thou cause Thy servant this sorrow?
Art thou so little disposed towards me?
That thou wouldst have me bear the burden of all the people?
It seems as if I had conceived and given birth to all that people,
and have brought it into the world, that thou dost say to me:
Carry it to thy heart as a nurse carries an infant,
and that Thou dost command me
bring it to the land
which thou hast promised to his fathers by oath.
Where shall I get meat for all this people?
They are crying out to me, “Give us meat to eat!
I cannot bear the burdens of all that people alone.
It is too heavy for me!
If thou wilt continue to do so with me
kill me, if Thou wilt have mercy on me.
Then I need not see my misery any longer.

Praise the Lord, our strength!
Israel did not hear my voice, says the Lord,
my people did not obey.
Then I let them go with their hard minds,
they went their own way.
Ah, if only my people would listen to me,

and I would turn my hand against their tormentors.
Then would the enemies of God look them in the mouth
and so it would remain for ever.
Then will I feed my people with wheat flour,

After the blessing, Jesus broke the loaves.

When Jesus heard the news of John’s murder, he sailed away in a boat to a lonely place to be alone.
But the rumour of this reached the people
and they followed Him on foot out of their towns.
So when He saw a great multitude on the landing
He had great compassion on them, and healed their sick.
By nightfall
His disciples came to him and said :
“This place is lonely and it is already late in the day.
“So send the people away to go and buy food in the villages.”
“It is not necessary that they go away
– Jesus said to them: “You must give them food.
But they answered :
“We have here no more than five loaves and two fishes.”
Whereupon Jesus said, “Bring them here.”
And he commanded the people to sit down on the grass.
He took the five loaves of bread and the two fish,
lifted up his eyes to heaven,
and after pronouncing the blessing
He broke the loaves, which He gave to His disciples
and the disciples gave them to the people again.
All ate until they were satiated
and from the remaining pieces
they collected twelve more full baskets.
It was about five thousand men who had eaten,
not counting women and children.

7. These contributions from the Popes include the reflections of numerous scholars, philosophers, theologians and civil society organisations who have enriched the Church’s thinking on these issues. However, we cannot ignore the fact that, outside the Catholic Church, other Churches and Christian communities – as well as other religions – have also developed a deep concern and precious reflection on these issues of concern to us all. To cite just one particularly significant example, I would like to briefly repeat a part of the contribution of our beloved Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, with whom we share the hope for full ecclesial unity.
