Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Na de rituele aanstelling van Jozua en de overdracht van het gezag over het volk, verhaalt Deuteronomium de dood van Mozes op een uitzonderlijk eenvoudige wijze (vers 5). Dit verhaal contrasteert met al het vorige. Zeer uitvoerig is alles verhaald: de overdracht, de afscheidsliederen. Nu is er de indrukwekkende eenvoud. De dood wordt voorafgegaan door een ontroerend verhaal. Mozes mag nog zelf het beloofde land aanschouwen. De belofte aan de stamvader gaat dus in vervulling. Het slot van het boek verwijst nog eens naar de overdracht aan Jozua, met de extra vermelding dat niemand met Mozes te vergelijken zal zijn.
EERSTE LEZING Deut. 34, 1-12
Zoals de Heer gezegd had stierf Mozes.
In Israël is geen profeet meer opgestaan als hij.
Uit het Boek Deuteronomium
In die dagen ging Mozes uit de vlakte de berg Nebo op,
naar de top van de Pisga, recht tegenover Jericho.
En de Heer liet hem het hele land zien :
Gilead tot aan Dan toe,
heel Naftali, het gebied van Efraïm en Manasse,
het gebied van Juda tot aan de Zee in het westen,
de Negeb, de Jordaanstreek, de vlakte van Jericho,
de palmenstad, tot Soar toe.
Toen zei de Heer tot hem :
“Dat is nu het land, waarvan Ik aan Abraham,
Isaäk en Jakob onder ede beloofd heb :
Aan uw nakomelingen zal Ik het geven.
“Ik heb het u met uw eigen ogen laten zien,
ofschoon ge de overtocht daarheen niet zult meemaken.”
Daar in Moab stierf Mozes, de dienaar van de Heer,
zoals deze gezegd had.
Hij werd begraven in het dal, bij Bet-Peor in Moab ;
tot op heden weet niemand waar zijn graf ligt.
Mozes was honderdtwintig jaar, toen hij stierf ;
zijn ogen waren niet verzwakt en zijn krachten niet afgenomen.
In de vlakte van Moab treurden de Israëlieten
dertig dagen over Mozes, totdat de rouwtijd voorbij was.
Jozua, zoon van Nun,
was van de geest van wijsheid vervuld,
sinds Mozes hem de handen had opgelegd,
en de Israëlieten gehoorzaamden hem
en deden wat de Heer aan Mozes had opgedragen ;
maar er is in Israël geen profeet meer opgestaan als Mozes,
die de Heer van aangezicht tot aangezicht gekend had
en die, door de Heer gezonden, in Egypte aan Farao,
aan zijn hovelingen en aan heel zijn land
al die tekenen en wonderen had gedaan
en met grote macht ten aanschouwen van Israël
indrukwekkende daden had verricht.
TUSSENZANG Ps. 66(65), 1-3a, 5, 8, 16-17
God zij geprezen,
Hij heeft mijn leven steeds weer gered.
Jubelt voor God, alle landen der aarde,
bezingt de heerlijkheid van zijn Naam.
Brengt Hem uw hulde en zegt tot uw God :
verbijsterend zijn al uw daden.
Komt en aanschouwt wat God heeft verricht,
ontstellende daden onder de mensen.
Prijst, alle volken, nu onze God,
verkondigt de faam van zijn daden.
Komt dan, godvrezenden, luistert naar mij,
ik zal u verhalen wat Hij mij gedaan heeft.
Hem heeft mijn mond steeds om hulp gevraagd,
mijn tong heeft Hem altijd geprezen.

haal er dan nog een of twee personen bij
opdat alles beruste op de verklaring van twee of drie getuigen.
“Als hij naar hen niet wil luisteren,
leg het dan voor aan de kerk.
“Wil hij ook naar de kerk niet luisteren,
beschouw hem dan als een heiden of tollenaar.
“Voorwaar, Ik zeg u :
wat gij zult binden op aarde
zal ook in de hemel gebonden zijn,
en wat gij zult ontbinden op aarde
zal ook in de hemel ontbonden zijn.”
“Eveneens zeg Ik u :
wanneer twee van u eensgezind op aarde iets vragen
-het moge zijn wat het wil –
zullen zij het verkrijgen van mijn Vader die in de hemel is.
“Want waar er twee of drie verenigd zijn in mijn Naam,
daar ben Ik in hun midden.”

16. Hoewel ieder hoofdstuk een eigen thematiek en specifieke methodologie heeft, herneemt het op zijn beurt vanuit een nieuw perspectief belangrijke kwesties die in de voorafgaande hoofdstukken zijn behandeld. Dit betreft in het bijzonder enkele belangrijke aspecten die door de hele encycliek heen lopen. Bijvoorbeeld: de nauwe relatie tussen de armen en de broosheid van de planeet; de overtuiging dat alles in de wereld nauw met elkaar in verband staat; kritiek op het nieuwe paradigma en de vormen van macht die voortvloeien uit de technologie; de uitnodiging andere manieren te zoeken om de economie en de vooruitgang te verstaan; de eigen waarde van ieder schepsel; de menselijke zin van de ecologie; de noodzaak van oprechte en eerlijke debatten; de zware verantwoordelijkheid van de internationale en lokale politiek; de wegwerpcultuur en het voorstel voor een nieuwe levensstijl. Deze thema’s worden nooit afgesloten of verder niet meer behandeld, maar integendeel voortdurend hernomen en verrijkt.

After the ritual appointment of Joshua and the transfer of authority over the people, Deuteronomy recounts the death of Moses in an exceptionally simple manner (verse 5). This narrative contrasts with all the previous ones. Very elaborately everything has been narrated: the handover, the farewell songs. Now there is the impressive simplicity. Death is preceded by a moving story. Moses still gets to see the promised land for himself. So the promise to the progenitor is fulfilled. The end of the book refers once more to the handover to Joshua, with the additional mention that no one will be comparable to Moses.
FIRST READING Deut. 34, 1-12
As the Lord had said, Moses died.
No prophet in Israel has risen like him.
From the Book of Deuteronomy
In those days Moses went up from the plain to Mount Nebo,
to the top of the Pisga, opposite Jericho.
And the Lord showed him all the land :
Gilead as far as Dan,
all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh,
the region of Judah unto the sea in the west,
the Negeb, the Jordan, the plain of Jericho,
the city of palms, even to Soar.
Then the Lord said to him :
“Now this is the land of which I gave Abraham,
I have promised under oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob:
I will give it to your descendants.
“I have shown it to you with your own eyes,
though you shall not see it come to pass.”
There in Moab died Moses, the servant of the Lord,
as the Lord had said.
He was buried in the valley near Bet-Peor in Moab ;
to this day no one knows where his grave lies.
Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died.
His eyes were not dimmed and his strength not diminished.
In the plain of Moab the Israelites mourned Moses for thirty days, until the time of mourning was over.
Joshua, son of Nun,
was filled with the spirit of wisdom,
since Moses laid hands on him,
and the Israelites obeyed him
and did what the Lord had commanded Moses ;
but no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses,
who had known the Lord face to face
and who, being sent by the Lord, went into Egypt to Pharaoh,
to his courtiers and to all his country
all those signs and wonders
and with great power had performed impressive
deeds for Israël.

16. Although each chapter will have its own subject and specific approach, it will also take up and re-examine important questions previously dealt with. This is particularly the case with a number of themes which will reappear as the Encyclical unfolds. As examples, I will point to the intimate relationship between the poor and the fragility of the planet, the conviction that everything in the world is connected, the critique of new paradigms and forms of power derived from technology, the call to seek other ways of understanding the economy and progress, the value proper to each creature, the human meaning of ecology, the need for forthright and honest debate, the serious responsibility of international and local policy, the throwaway culture and the proposal of a new lifestyle. These questions will not be dealt with once and for all, but reframed and enriched again and again.
