Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

OVERWEGING
Paulus onderhoudt de Tessalonicenzen – en alle christenen – over twee belangrijke houdingen die wij ons eigen moeten maken wanneer wij willen vorderen op de weg naar heiligheid. Gisteren hoorden we de vermaningen in verband met ontucht en de wijze waarop gehuwden met elkaar moeten omgaan. Vandaag gaat Paulus verder naar het tweede domein waarop christenen door hun levenswijze kunnen getuigen van het geloof: de broederliefde. Zij is de kern van de verkondiging en komt van God zelf. We mogen nooit nalaten ons daarop te bevragen – en te laten bevragen!
EERSTE LEZING I Tess. 4, 9-12
Zelf hebt gij van God geleerd elkander te beminnen.
Broeders en zusters,
Over de broederliefde is het niet nodig u te schrijven.
Zelf hebt gij van God geleerd elkander te beminnen,
En gij beoefent de liefde dan ook
jegens alle broeders in heel Macedonië.
Wij sporen u alleen aan, broeders en zusters,
dit nog veel meer te doen.
Stelt er een eer in rustig uw eigen zaken te behartigen
en met eerlijke arbeid in uw onderhoud te voorzien,
zoals wij u bevolen hebben.
Dan zal uw gedrag
een waardige indruk maken op de buitenstaanders
en zijt gij van niemand afhankelijk.
TUSSENZANG Ps. 98(97), 1, 7-8, 9
Rechtvaardig bestuurt God de wereld,
de volken met billijkheid.
Zingt voor de Heer een nieuw gezang
omdat Hij wonderen deed.
Zijn hand deed zich krachtig gelden,
de macht van zijn heilige arm.
De zee stemt in met al haar gedierte,
de aarde met al wat daar leeft ;
de beken klateren bijval,
de bergen jubelen mee.
Zij groeten de Heer, die nabij komt,
die nadert als koning der aarde.
Rechtvaardig bestuurt Hij de wereld,
de volken met billijkheid.

EVANGELIE Mt. 25, 14-30
Omdat gij over weinig trouw waart :
ga binnen in de vreugde van de Heer.
In die tijd sprak Jezus tot zijn leerlingen in gelijkenissen.
Hij zei:
‘Het zal met het Rijk der hemelen zijn
als met de man
die bij zijn vertrek naar het buitenland
zijn dienaars bij zich riep
om hun zijn bezit toe te vertrouwen.
Aan de een gaf hij vijf talenten,
aan de andere twee,
aan een derde één,
ieder naar zijn bekwaamheid.
Daarna vertrok hij.
Die de vijf talenten gekregen had
ging er terstond mee werken en verdiende er vijf bij.
Zo verdiende ook degene die de twee gekregen had
er twee bij.
Maar die dat ene had gekregen
ging een gat in de grond graven
en het geld van zijn heer verbergen.
Een hele tijd later kwam de heer van die dienaars terug
en hield afrekening met hen.
Die vijf talenten gekregen had trad naar voren
en bood nog vijf talenten aan met de woorden:
Heer, vijf talenten hebt gij mij toevertrouwd;
ziehier, vijf talenten heb ik erbij verdiend.
Zijn meester sprak tot hem:
Uitstekend, goede en trouwe dienaar,
over weinig waart ge trouw, over veel zal ik u aanstellen.
Ga binnen in de vreugde van uw heer.
Nu trad die van de twee talenten naar voren en zei:
Heer, twee talenten hebt gij mij toevertrouwd;
ziehier, twee talenten heb ik erbij verdiend.
Zijn meester sprak tot hem:
Uitstekend, goede en trouwe dienaar,
over weinig waart ge trouw, over veel zal ik u aanstellen.
Ga binnen in de vreugde van uw heer.
Tenslotte
trad ook die het ene talent had gekregen naar voren en zei:
Heer, ik heb ervaren dat gij een hard mens zijt,
die oogst waar gij niet gezaaid hebt
en binnenhaalt waar gij niet hebt uitgestrooid.
Daarom was ik bang
en ben uw talent in de grond gaan verbergen.
Hier hebt ge uw eigendom terug.
Maar zijn meester gaf hem ten antwoord:
Slechte en luie knecht,
je wist dus dat ik oogst waar ik niet gezaaid heb
en binnenhaal waar ik niet heb uitgestrooid?
Daarom had je mijn geld bij de bankiers moeten uitzetten
dan zou ik bij mijn komst
mijn bezit met rente teruggekregen hebben.
Neemt hem dus dat talent af
en geeft het aan wie de tien talenten heeft.
Want aan ieder die heeft zal gegeven worden,
zelfs in overvloed gegeven worden;
maar wie niet heeft,
hem zal nog ontnomen worden zelfs wat hij heeft.
En werpt die onnutte knecht buiten in de duisternis;
daar zal geween zijn en tandengeknars.’

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijk huis
33. Het is echter niet genoeg alleen maar te denken aan de verschillende soorten als eventuele te exploiteren “hulpbronnen” en daarbij te vergeten dat zij een waarde op zich hebben. Ieder jaar verdwijnen er duizenden planten- en diersoorten die wij niet meer zullen kunnen kennen, die onze kinderen niet zullen kunnen zien, omdat ze voor altijd verloren zijn gegaan. De overgrote meerderheid sterft uit om redenen die te maken hebben met de een of andere menselijke activiteit. Door toedoen van ons zullen duizenden soorten God geen lof meer brengen met hun bestaan, noch zullen zij ons hun boodschap kunnen meedelen. Wij hebben het recht niet ertoe.

CONSIDERATION
Paul teaches the Thessalonians – and all Christians – about two important attitudes that we must master if we are to make progress on the road to holiness. Yesterday we heard the admonitions concerning fornication and the way married couples should treat each other. Today, Paul moves on to the second area in which Christians can testify to their faith by their way of life: brotherly love. It is at the heart of the proclamation and comes from God himself. We must never fail to question it – and to allow ourselves to be questioned!
FIRST READING I Tess. 4, 9-12
You yourselves have been taught by God to love one another.
From the First Letter of the Apostle Paul to the Christians of Thessalonica
Brothers and sisters,
It is not necessary to write to you about brotherly love.
You yourselves have been taught by God to love one another,
and you are practicing love
towards all the brethren in all Macedonia.
We only urge you, brothers and sisters,
to do this much more.
Strive to conduct thy own affairs quietly
and to provide for yourselves with honest labor,
as we have commanded you.
Then your conduct will
make a worthy impression on the outsiders
and you will depend on no one.

In those days, Jesus spoke to his disciples in parables.
He said:
“It will be with the kingdom of heaven
as with the man
who, when he went abroad
called his servants to him
to entrust them with his property.
To one he gave five talents,
to another two,
to a third, one,
each according to his skill.
Then he departed.
He who had received the five talents went to work immediately and earned five more.
Likewise, the one who had received two talents
earned two more.
But the one who had received the one
went and dug a hole in the ground
and hid his lord’s money.
And after a long time, the lord of those servants came back
and reckoned with them.
The one who had received five talents came forward
and offered five more talents, saying:
Lord, five talents thou hast entrusted to me;
Lo! I have earned five talents.
His master spoke to him:
Excellent, good and faithful servant,
about little thou hast been faithful, about much I will appoint thee.
Enter into the joy of your lord.
Now the one of the two talents came forward and said:
Lord, two talents hast thou entrusted upon me;
behold, two talents I have earned.

Poor and lazy servant,
so you knew that I reap where I have not sown
and take in where I have not spread?

I would have recovered my property with interest.
So take away his talent
and give it to him who has the ten talents.
For to every one that hath shall be given,
even be given in abundance;
but whosoever hath not,
even what he has shall be taken away from him.

33. It is not enough, however, to think of different species merely as potential “resources” to be exploited, while overlooking the fact that they have value in themselves. Each year sees the disappearance of thousands of plant and animal species which we will never know, which our children will never see, because they have been lost for ever. The great majority become extinct for reasons related to human activity. Because of us, thousands of species will no longer give glory to God by their very existence, nor convey their message to us. We have no such right.
