Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
De opsomming van alle namen op het einde van Paulus’ brief is van groot belang. Paulus was nooit in Rome geweest, maar de lijst toont dat hij er vele vrienden heeft. In hun huis ontvangen Prisca en Aquila de christenen om eucharistie te vieren. Van die eerste christenen werd gezegd: “Kijk hoe zij elkaar liefhebben!”. Valt uit onze houding, onze levensstijl af te leiden hoe wij elkaar graag zien? Hoe kunnen wij, in kleine dingen, beetje bij beetje de eenvoud en de soberheid weergeven van dat dagelijks gedeelde geloofsleven?
EERSTE LEZING Rom. 16, 3-9. 16. 22-27
Groet elkaar met de heilige kus.
Uit de brief van de heilige apostel Paulus aan de christenen van Rome
Broeders en zusters,
Groet Prisca en Aquila, mijn medearbeiders in Christus Jezus
die hun leven voor mij op het spel hebben gezet ;
niet alleen ik ben hun dank verschuldigd
maar ook al de heidengemeenten.
Groet insgelijks de gemeente bij hen aan huis.
Groet mijn geliefde Epénetus, Asia’s eersteling voor christus.
groet Maria, die zich zoveel moeite voor u heeft gegeven.
Groet Androníkus en Junias,
mijn landgenoten en medegevangenen,
mannen van aanzien onder de apostelen,
die al eerder christen waren dan ik.
Groet Ampliátus, mijn dierbare vriend in de Heer.
Groet Urbanus, onze medewerker in de zaak van Christus
en mijn geliefde Stachys.
Groet elkander met de heilige kus.
U groeten al de gemeenten van Christus.
Ik, Tertius, die deze brief heb opgenomen groet u in de Heer.
Gajus, gastheer van mij en van de hele christengemeente,
Erastus, de beheerder van de stedelijke financiën
en onze broeder Quartus laten u groeten.
De genade van onze Heer Jezus Christus zij met u allen. Amen !
Aan Hem die bij machte is u te bevestigen
in het evangelie van Jezus Christus dat ik verkondig
– volgens de openbaring van het geheim
dat eeuwenlang verzwegen bleef
maar nu is onthuld,
en krachtens de opdracht van de eeuwige God
aan de hand van profetische geschriften
aan alle heidenvolken is bekend gemaakt
om hen te brengen tot de gehoorzaamheid van het geloof –
aan Hem, de enige, alwijze God zij de heerlijkheid
door Jezus Christus in de eeuwen der eeuwen !

U wil ik loven, mijn God en Koning,
uw Naam verheerlijken voor altijd.

Wanneer gij niet betrouwbaar zijt geweest
in de onrechtvaardige mammon,
wie zal u dan het waarachtige goed toevertrouwen ?
Uit het heilig evangelie van onze Heer Jezus Christus volgens
Lucas
In die tijd zei Jezus tot zijn leerlingen :
“Maakt u vrienden door middel van de onrechtvaardige mammon,
opdat zij – wanneer die u komt te ontvallen –
u in de eeuwige tenten opnemen.
“Wie betrouwbaar is in het kleinste
is ook betrouwbaar in het grote ;
en wie onrechtvaardig is in het kleinste
is ook onrechtvaardig in het grote.
“Zijt ge dus niet betrouwbaar geweest
in de onrechtvaardige mammon,
wie zal u dan het waarachtige goed toevertrouwen ?
“Als ge niet betrouwbaar zijt geweest
in het beheren van andermans goed,
wie zal u dan geven wat gij het uwe kunt noemen ?
“Geen knecht kan twee heren dienen,
want hij zal de een haten en de ander liefhebben,
ofwel de een aanhangen en de ander verachten.
“Gij kunt niet God dienen en de mammon.”
De Farizeeën, belust op geld als zij waren, hoorden dit alles aan
en ze lachten Hem uit.
Hij sprak tot hen :
“Bij de mensen doet gij uzelf als rechtvaardige voor,
maar God kent uw hart.
“Waar de mensen naar opzien, is in Gods ogen een gruwel.”

103. De technische wetenschap is, als zij juist is georiënteerd, in staat niet alleen werkelijke belangrijke dingen tot stand te brengen om de kwaliteit van leven van het menselijk wezen te verbeteren, van de voorwerpen voor huishoudelijk gebruik tot de grote transportmiddelen, bruggen, gebouwen, openbare ruimten. Zij is ook in staat het schone voort te brengen en het menselijk wezen, ondergedompeld in de materiële wereld, de “sprong” te laten maken naar de wereld van de schoonheid. Kan men de schoonheid van een vliegtuig of van sommige wolkenkrabbers ontkennen? Er zijn kostbare schilder- of muziekwerken die tot stand zijn gebracht, doordat men zijn toevlucht nam tot nieuwe technische instrumenten. Zo maakt men in het verlangen van de kunstenaar en in wie naar deze schoonheid kijkt, de sprong naar een zekere echt menselijke schoonheid.

CONSIDERATION
The enumeration of all the names at the end of Paul’s letter is of great importance. Paul had never been to Rome, but the list shows that he has many friends there. In their house, Prisca and Aquila receive the Christians to celebrate the Eucharist. It was said of those first Christians: “Look how they love each other! Can we tell from our attitude, from our lifestyle, how we love each other? How can we, in small things, little by little, reflect the simplicity and sobriety of that daily shared life of faith?

in the unrighteous mammon,
who will trust you with true good?

In those days Jesus said to his disciples :
“Make friends with unrighteous mammon,
so that when it comes to your loss they may
receive you into the eternal tents.
“He who is reliable in the smallest matter
is also trustworthy in the great;
and he that is unjust in the smallest
shall be unjust in the greatest.
“Therefore have ye not been faithful
in the unrighteous mammon,
who will trust you with true good?
“If thou hast not been faithful
in the management of another’s good,
who will give you what you can call your own?
“No servant can serve two masters,
for he will hate the one and love the other,
or adore the one and despise the other.
“Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”
The Pharisees, greedy for money as they were, heard all this
and they laughed at Him.
He spoke to them :
“In the sight of men you pretend to be righteous,
but God knows your heart.
“What men look up to is an abomination in the sight of God.”

103. Technoscience, when well directed, can produce important means of improving the quality of human life, from useful domestic appliances to great transportation systems, bridges, buildings and public spaces. It can also produce art and enable men and women immersed in the material world to “leap” into the world of beauty. Who can deny the beauty of an aircraft or a skyscraper? Valuable works of art and music now make use of new technologies. So, in the beauty intended by the one who uses new technical instruments and in the contemplation of such beauty, a quantum leap occurs, resulting in a fulfilment which is uniquely human.
