Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Jezus en Johannes de Doper passen niet in de religieuze wereld van hogepriesters en oudsten. Ze passen niet in het verwachtingspatroon, en worden bevraagd, geïnterpelleerd. Het is de tijd van de beslissende keuzes: wie oor had naar de verkondiging van Johannes, zal zich ook voorbereiden op de komst van Jezus.
Die komst bereiden we voor door tijd te maken om na te denken: over de kleine en grotere keuzes die we elke dag maken – of niet maken. Om na te gaan welke beslissingen mij dichter bij Jezus brengen, en welke de weg naar Hem versperren. Om de vraag te stellen of mijn bidden en handelen zo zijn dat er met Kerstmis échte bevrijding komt.
EERSTE LEZING Num. 24, 2-7. 15-17a
Een ster komt op uit Jakob
Uit het Boek Numeri
Toen Bileam de ogen opsloeg en Israël
stam bij stam gelegerd zag, kwam de geest van God over hem.
Hij hief het volgende lied aan:
“Dit is het orakel van Bileam, zoon van Beor,
het orakel van de man die geheimen mocht zien,
het orakel van hem die God hoort spreken,
die schouwt wat de Almachtige ontsluiert,
en in extase openbaringen ontvangt.
“Hoe schoon zijn uw tenten, Jakob,
hoe mooi uw woningen, Israël :
als dalen liggen zij uitgespreid,
als tuinen langs een rivier,
als aloëbomen door de Heer geplant,
als ceders die staan aan het water.
“Zijn emmers stromen over van water ;
wat hij zaait wordt volop bevloeid.
“Zijn koning komt hoger dan Agag ;
zijn koningschap zal zich verheffen.”
Toe hief hij het volgende lied aan :

die weet wat de Allerhoogste weet,
die schouwt wat de Almachtig ontsluiert
en in extase openbaringen ontvangt.

ik aanschouw hem, maar niet van nabij ;
een ster komt op uit Jakob,
een scepter rijst uit Israël.”

Wijs mij uw wegen, Heer,
leer mij uw paden kennen.

Leid mij volgens uw woord,

uw altijd geschonken ontferming.

Het doopsel van Johannes, waar was dat vandaan ?
Uit het heilig evangelie van onze Heer Jezus Christus volgens
Matteüs
Op zekere dag ging Jezus naar de tempel
en toen Hij daar aan het onderrichten was,
kwamen de hogepriesters en de oudsten van het volk
Hem de vraag stellen :
“Welke bevoegdheid hebt Gij om dit alles te doen ?
“En wie heeft U die bevoegdheid dan gegeven ?”
Jezus antwoordde hun :
“Ik zal u ook een vraag stellen,
en als gij Mij daar antwoord op geeft,
zal Ik u op mijn beurt zeggen
krachtens welke bevoegdheid Ik dit alles doe.
“Het doopsel van Johannes, waar was dat vandaan ?
“Van de hemel of van de mensen ?”
Zij beraadslaagden onder elkaar :
“Als wij zeggen : van de hemel, dan zal Hij tegen ons zeggen :
Waarom hebt gij hem dan geen geloof geschonken ?
“Als we zeggen : van de mensen,
dan hebben wij het volk te vrezen,
want iedereen houdt Johannes voor een profeet.”
Ze gaven Jezus dus ten antwoord :
“Wij weten het niet.”
Toe zei Hij op zijn beurt tot hen :
“Dan zeg Ik u evenmin
krachtens welke bevoegdheid Ik zo handel.”

147. Om te kunnen spreken van een authentieke ontwikkeling, zal het moeten gebeuren dat er een integrale verbetering in de kwaliteit van menselijk leven tot stand komt en dit houdt in dat men de ruimte analyseert waarin het bestaan van de personen zich afspeelt. Het milieu waarin wij leven, beïnvloedt de wijze waarop wij het leven zien, voelen en handelen. Tegelijkertijd maken wij in onze kamer, in ons huis, op onze werkplek en in onze wijk gebruik van het milieu om onze identiteit tot uitdrukking te brengen. Wij spannen ons in ons aan het milieu aan te passen en wanneer dit milieu ongeordend, chaotisch en verzadigd van zichtbare en hoorbare vervuiling is, daagt deze overmaat aan prikkels ons uit om een geïntegreerde en gelukkige identiteit te ontwikkelen.

Consideration
Jesus and John the Baptist do not fit into the religious world of high priests and elders. They do not fit into the pattern of expectations, and are questioned, interrogated. It is the time of decisive choices: those who listened to the proclamation of John, will also prepare themselves for the coming of Jesus.
We prepare for that coming by making time to think: about the small and bigger choices we make – or don’t make – every day. To consider which decisions bring me closer to Jesus, and which block the way to Him. To ask the question if my prayers and actions are such that real liberation comes at Christmas.

A star rises from Jacob
From the Book of Numbers
When Bileam lifted up his eyes and saw
Israel encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came upon him.
He breathed the following song:
“This is the oracle of Bileam, son of Beor,
the oracle of the man who could see secrets,
the oracle of him who hears God speak,
who beholds what the Almighty reveals,
and receives revelations in ecstasy.
“How beautiful are thy tents, Jacob,
how beautiful are thy dwellings, Israel :
Like valleys they spread out,
like gardens along a river,
like aloes planted by the Lord,
like cedars standing by the water.
“His buckets overflow with water ;
that which he soweth shall be plentifully watered.
“His king shall come higher than Agag ;
his kingship shall be exalted.”
Then he raised the following song :

Matthew
One day Jesus went to the temple
and as he was teaching there
the high priests and the elders of the people
asked Him the question:
“What authority have You to do all this?
“And who has given You this authority?”
Jesus answered them :
“I will also ask you a question,
and if you answer me,
then I will tell you in turn
by what authority I do all these things.
“The baptism of John, where did it come from?
“From heaven or from men?”
They deliberated among themselves :
“If we say : from heaven, He will say to us :
Why then did you not give him faith?
“If we say from men,
then we have the people to fear,
for everyone thinks that John is a prophet.”
So they answered Jesus :
“We do not know.”
Then He in turn said to them :
“Then neither do I tell you
by what authority I act thus.”

III. Ecology of Daily Life
147. To be able to speak of an authentic development, it will have to happen that there is an integral improvement in the quality of human life, and this implies analysing the space in which the existence of individuals takes place. The environment in which we live influences the way we see, feel and act. At the same time, in our room, in our home, in our workplace and in our neighbourhood, we use the environment to express our identity. We make an effort to adapt to the environment and when this environment is disordered, chaotic and saturated with visible and audible pollution, this excess of stimuli challenges us to develop an integrated and happy identity.
