Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Verleden woensdag werd de tong reeds vermeld als iets dat men steeds moet beteugelen. Vandaag krijgt de tong de volle laag. Wel is ze in staat tot het hoogste: God zegenen en loven, maar helaas vaak tot het laagste: Ze brengt ongerechtigheid; kan alles in vuur en vlam zetten; kan venijn spuwen en medemensen vervloeken. Uit een en dezelfde mond komt zegen voort en vloek. Wie niet zondigt met de tong is een volmaakt mens. En dit alles krijgen we weer in de volkse taal en voorbeelden van Jakobus.
EERSTE LEZING Jak. 3, 1-10
De tong kan geen mens temmen.
Uit de brief van de heilige apostel Jakobus
Broeders en zusters,
Laat niet zovelen onder u leraars zijn.
Gij weet toch
dat wij er alleen maar strenger om geoordeeld zullen worden.
Want wij allen struikelen vele malen.
Wie in zijn spreken nooit misdoet
is een volmaakt mens,
in staat zichzelf geheel in toom te houden.
Wij hoeven een paard slechts een toom in de mond te leggen
om het hele dier te besturen en in de hand te hebben.
Of denkt aan een schip:
hoe groot het ook is
en al wordt het door hevige winden voortgedreven,
toch wordt het door een heel klein roer gewend
naar believen van de stuurman.
Ook de tong is maar een klein deel van ons lichaam;
toch voert zij een hoge toon.
Bedenkt
hoe weinig vuur er nodig is om een groot bos in brand te steken.
Ook de tong is een vuur,
een wereld van ongerechtigheid ;
onder onze ledematen is het de tong
die het geheel kan bezoedelen
en ons levensrad in vlam zetten,
zelf in vlam gezet door de hel.
Wilde beesten, vogels, reptielen, vissen,
elke diersoort wordt getemd
of is al getemd door het menselijk geslacht.
Maar de tong kan geen mens temmen ,
dat bandeloos euvel vol dodelijk venijn.
Met haar zegenen wij onze Heer en Vader,
en met haar vervloeken wij de mensen
die naar Gods gelijkenis zijn geschapen.
Uit een en dezelfde mond komt zegen voort en vloek.
Broeders en zusters, dit mag niet zo zijn !
TUSSENZANG Ps. 12(11), 2-3, 4-5, 7-8
Gij, Heer, zult ons behoeden.
Heer, sta ons bij ! Want niemand is betrouwbaar,
er is geen eerlijkheid onder de mensen meer.
Ze spreken leugens, ieder tot zijn naaste
met sluwe lippen en gespleten hart.
Verdelgen moge God die valse lippen,
die tongen met hun trotse taal,
die zeggen : met de tong zijn wij almachtig,
ons wapen is de mond ; wie kan ons aan ?
Het woord des Heren is betrouwbaar,
gelouterd zilver, vrij van slijk.
Gij, Heer, zult ons behoeden,
ons steeds beschermen tegen hen.

Uw woord is een lamp voor mijn voeten, Heer,
het is een licht op mijn pad.

EVANGELIE Mc. 9, 2-13
Jezus werd voor hun ogen van gedaante veranderd.
Uit het heilig evangelie van onze Heer Jezus Christus volgens
Marcus
In die tijd
nam Jezus Petrus, Jakobus en Johannes met zich mee
en bracht hen boven op een hoge berg
waar zij geheel alleen waren.
Hij werd voor hun ogen van gedaante veranderd :
Zijn kleed werd glanzend
en zó wit als geen volder ter wereld maken kan.
Elia verscheen hun samen met Mozes
en zij onderhielden zich met Jezus.
Petrus nam het woord en zei tot Jezus:
“Rabbi, het is goed dat wij hier zijn.
“Laten we drie tenten bouwen,
een voor U, een voor Mozes en een voor Elia.”
Hij wist niet goed wat hij zei,
want ze waren geheel verbluft.
Een wolk kwam hen overschaduwen
en uit die wolk klonk een stem :
“Dit is mijn Zoon,
de Welbeminde,
luistert naar Hem.”
Toen ze rondkeken,
zagen ze plotseling niemand anders bij hen dan alleen Jezus.
Onder het afdalen van de berg
verbood Jezus hun aan iemand te vertellen wat ze gezien hadden,
voordat de Mensenzoon uit de doden zou zijn opgestaan.
Zij hielden het inderdaad voor zich,
al vroegen zij zich onder elkaar af
wat dat opstaan uit de doden mocht betekenen.
Aan Jezus stelden zij de vraag :
“Waarom zeggen de schriftgeleerden toch
dat eerst Elia moet komen?”
Hij antwoordde hun :
“Elia komt eerst om alles te herstellen.
“Maar wat staat er geschreven over de Mensenzoon?
“Dat Hij veel zal lijden en veracht zal worden.
“Maar Ik zeg u : Elia is al gekomen
en zij hebben naar willekeur met hem gehandeld
zoals over hem geschreven staat.”

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijke huis
215. In deze context “mag de relatie die er is tussen een geëigende esthetische opvoeding en de bescherming van een gezond milieu … niet worden verwaarloosd”. Aandacht schenken aan schoonheid en deze liefhebben helpt ons buiten een utilitaristisch pragmatisme te treden. Wanneer men niet leert stil te blijven staan om het schone te bewonderen en te waarderen, is het niet vreemd dat alles verandert in een object dat men zonder scrupules mag gebruiken of misbruiken. Als men wil komen tot diepgaande veranderingen, moet men voor ogen houden dat denkmodellen werkelijk van invloed zijn op gedragingen. De opvoeding zal ondoelmatig zijn en alle krachtsinspanningen onvruchtbaar, als men er geen zorg voor draagt ook een nieuw model te verspreiden betreffende de mens, het leven, de maatschappij en de relatie met de natuur. Anders zal het consumptistische model dat door de communicatiemiddelen en de doeltreffende marktmechanismen wordt doorgegeven, zich blijven ontwikkelen.

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with you the joy of the Gospel.
Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience this joy by opening his heart
to the healing effect of God’s word.

Consideration
Last Wednesday the tongue was already mentioned as something to be restrained at all times. Today the tongue gets the full treatment. It is capable of the highest things: to bless and praise God, but unfortunately it is often capable of the lowest: it brings iniquity; it can set everything on fire; it can spit venom and curse its fellow men. Out of one and the same mouth comes blessing and cursing. He who does not sin with his tongue is a perfect person. And all this we get again in the vernacular language and examples of James.
FIRST READING James 3, 1-10
The tongue cannot tame a man.
From the letter of the holy apostle James
Brothers and sisters,
Let not so many of you be teachers.
Ye know
Ye know that we shall only be judged more severely for it.
For we all stumble many times.
He that never erreth in his speech
Is a perfect man,
able to keep himself entirely in check.
We have only to put a bridle in a horse’s mouth to steer the whole animal
In order to control the whole animal and have it in our hands.
Or think of a ship:
no matter how big it is
and though it is driven by violent winds,
yet it is turned by a very small rudder
at the will of the helmsman.
The tongue too is only a small part of our body;
yet it carries a high note.
Consider
How little fire is needed to set a large forest on fire.
The tongue too is a fire,
a world of iniquity ;
Among our limbs it is the tongue
that can tarnish the whole
and set fire to our wheel of life,
itself set ablaze by hell.
Wild beasts, birds, reptiles, fish,
every species is tamed
or has already been tamed by the human race.
But the tongue can tame no man :
That unbridled vice full of deadly venom.
With it we bless our Lord and Father,
and with it we curse those
created in the image of God.
Out of one and the same mouth comes blessing and cursing.
Brothers and sisters, this must not be allowed to happen!

You, Lord, will keep us.
Lord, help us! For no one is trustworthy,
There is no honesty among men any more.
They speak lies, each to his neighbour.
With cunning lips and with a crooked heart.

our weapon is the mouth; who can resist us?
The word of the Lord is reliable,

GOSPEL Mk 9, 2-13
Jesus was transformed before their eyes.
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark
At that time
Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and
and brought them up on a high mountain
where they were all alone.
He was transformed before their eyes:
His garment became shining
and as white as no bleacher in the world could make it.
Elijah appeared to them together with Moses
and they conversed with Jesus.
Peter took the floor and said to Jesus:
“Rabbi, it is good that we are here.
“Let us build three tents,
one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
He didn’t quite know what he was saying,
for they were completely astonished.
A cloud came to overshadow them
and out of that cloud came a voice:
“This is my Son,
the well-beloved,
listen to Him.”
When they looked around,
they suddenly saw no one else with them but Jesus.
As they descended the mountain
Jesus forbade them to tell anyone what they had seen,
before the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
Indeed, they kept it to themselves,
though they wondered among themselves
what this rising from the dead might mean.
To Jesus they asked the question :
“Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?
He answered them :
“Elijah will come first to restore everything.
“But what is written about the Son of Man?
“That He will suffer much and be despised.
“But I say to you : Elijah has already come
and they have dealt with him arbitrarily
as it is written concerning him.”

215. In this context, “the relationship which exists between an appropriate aesthetic education and the protection of a healthy environment … must not be neglected”. Paying attention to and loving beauty helps us move beyond utilitarian pragmatism. If one does not learn to stop and admire and appreciate beauty, it is not surprising that everything turns into an object to be used or abused without scruples. If one wants to achieve profound changes, one must keep in mind that thinking models really influence behaviour. Education will be ineffective and all efforts unfruitful if we do not also take care to spread a new model of man, life, society and the relationship with nature. Otherwise, the consumerist model passed on by the means of communication and effective market mechanisms will continue to develop.
