Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Het gesprek van Jezus met Nicodemus maakt duidelijk hoe groot Gods liefde voor de mensen is. Het zijn geen toevallig gekozen woorden die alleen voor Nicodemus bedoeld zijn, Jezus’ woorden zijn altijd bedoeld voor alle mensen van alle tijden, en dus ook voor ons. Hij vraagt de mens om het eigen leven te richten op God. Als we dat niet doen, maken we God machteloos om zijn liefde kenbaar te maken. Als we ons afwenden van het licht dat Jezus in de wereld wil laten schijnen, dan kan het licht ons niet bereiken. Niet omdat het niet effectief genoeg zou zijn, maar omdat wij door het bouwen van hindernissen verhinderen dat het tot ons komt.
Dat geeft de mens een zekere verantwoordelijkheid, die hij in vrijheid kan opnemen of weigeren. Hij kan keuzes maken, ten goede of ten kwade.
EERSTE LEZING Hand. 5, 17-26
De mannen die gij in de kerker hebt gezet bevinden zich in de tempel en onderrichten het volk.
Uit de Handelingen van de Apostelen
In die dagen werden de hogepriester en heel zijn aanhang,
die de partij der Sadduceeën vormden
met hevige afgunst vervuld.
Zij grepen de apostelen en zetten hen in de stadsgevangenis.
Maar in de nacht
ontsloot een engel des Heren de deuren van de gevangenis,
leidde hen naar buiten en zei :
“Gaat,
treedt weer op in de tempel
en predikt aan het volk al deze woorden des Levens.”
Zij gaven hieraan gehoor,
gingen tegen de morgen naar de tempel
en gaven er onderricht.
Toen nu de hogepriester kwam met de zijnen
riepen zij het Sanhedrin bijeen,
de raad der oudsten van het volk van Israël
en stuurden dienaren naar de gevangenis om hen te halen.
Maar bij aankomst vonden de dienaren hen niet meer in de kerker.
Zij keerden terug met het bericht :
“Wij vonden de gevangenis stevig op slot
en de wachten voor de deuren op hun post,
maar toen wij opendeden troffen wij niemand aan.”
Toen zij dit vernamen
vroegen de tempelcommandant en de hogepriesters,
– ongerust daarover –
zich af wat voor gevolgen dit zou kunnen hebben.
Maar iemand kwam hun melden :
“De mannen die gij in de kerker hebt gezet,
bevinden zich in de tempel en onderrichten het volk.”
Daarop ging de bevelhebber met zijn dienaren hen halen
– maar zonder geweld te gebruiken,
uit angst door het volk gestenigd te worden.
TUSSENZANG Ps. 34(33), 2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9
Die roepen in nood, naar hen luistert de Heer.
of : Alleluia.
De Heer zal ik prijzen iedere dag,
zijn lof ligt mij steeds op de lippen.
Mijn geest is fier op de gunst van de Heer,
laat elk die het hoort zich verheugen.
Verheerlijkt de Heer te samen met mij
en laat ons eendrachtig zijn Naam vereren.
Ik ging tot de Heer en Hij heeft mij verhoord,
Hij heeft mij gered uit al wat ik vreesde.
Verlaat u opHem, dan wordt ge gelukkig,
want Hij stelt u niet teleur.
Die roepen in nood, naar hen luistert de Heer
en redt hen uit hun ellende.
De engel van God legt een schans om hen heen,
om elk die God vreest te beschermen.
Let op en bemerkt hoe genadig de Heer is,
gelukkig is hij die zijn heil zoekt bij Hem.

“Zozeer heeft God de wereld lief gehad
dat Hij zijn eniggeboren Zoon heeft gegeven,
opdat al wie in Hem gelooft niet verloren zal gaan
maar eeuwig leven zal hebben.
“God heeft zijn Zoon
niet naar de wereld gezonden om de wereld te oordelen,
maar opdat de wereld door Hem zou worden gered.
“Wie in Hem gelooft wordt niet geoordeeld,
maar wie niet gelooft is al geoordeeld,
omdat hij niet heeft geloofd
in de Naam van de eniggeboren Zoon Gods.
“Hierin bestaat het oordeel :
Het licht is in de wereld gekomen,
maar de mensen beminden de duisternis meer dan het licht,
omdat hun daden slecht waren.
“Ieder die slecht handelt heeft een afschuw van het licht
en gaat niet naar het licht toe
uit vrees dat zijn werken openbaar gemaakt worden.
“Maar wie de waarheid doet gaat naar het licht,

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijk huis
34. Waarschijnlijk stoort het ons ons bewust te worden van het uitsterven van een zoogdier of een vogel vanwege hun grotere zichtbaarheid. Maar voor een goed functioneren van de ecosystemen zijn ook paddenstoelen, algen, wormen, kleine insecten, reptielen en de ontelbare variëteit aan micro-organismen noodzakelijk. Enkele weinig talrijke soorten, die gewoonlijk onopgemerkt blijven, spelen een fundamentele kritieke rol om het evenwicht van een plaats te stabiliseren. Het menselijk wezen moet weliswaar ingrijpen, wanneer een geosysteem in een kritieke fase komt, maar tegenwoordig is het niveau van menselijk ingrijpen in een zo complexe werkelijkheid als de natuur zodanig dat de rampen die door het menselijk wezen voortdurend worden veroorzaakt, een nieuw ingrijpen erdoor noodzakelijk maken, zodat de menselijke activiteit alomtegenwoordig wordt met alle risico’s van dien. Zo ontstaat een vicieuze cirkel waarbij het ingrijpen van het menselijk wezen om een moeilijkheid op te lossen vaak de situatie uiteindelijk nog maar erger maakt. Veel vogels en insecten die uitsterven op grond van de door de technologie geschapen giftige pesticiden, zijn bijvoorbeeld nuttig voor de landbouw zelf en het verdwijnen ervan zal moeten worden gecompenseerd met weer een technologisch ingrijpen, dat waarschijnlijk nieuwe schadelijke effecten ten gevolge zal hebben. De inspanningen van geleerden en technici die de door het menselijk wezen veroorzaakte problemen trachten op te lossen, zijn prijzenswaardig en soms bewonderenswaardig. Maar wanneer wij naar de wereld kijken, dan merken wij op dat dit niveau van menselijk ingrijpen, vaak ten dienste van het geld en het consumptisme, in werkelijkheid ervoor zorgt dat de aarde waarop wij leven, minder rijk en mooi wordt, steeds meer begrensd en grijs, terwijl tegelijkertijd de ontwikkeling van de technologie en het aanbod voor de consumptie onbegrensd blijft toenemen. Zo lijkt het dat wij ons wijsmaken een onherhaalbare en niet terug te krijgen schoonheid te kunnen vervangen door een andere, door ons geschapen.

May I hereby call your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with you the joy of the Gospel.
Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening his heart
to the healing effect of God’s word.

Consideration
Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus makes clear how great God’s love for people is. These are not randomly chosen words meant only for Nicodemus; Jesus’ words are always meant for all people of all times, and thus for us as well. He asks human beings to focus their own lives on God. If we do not, we render God powerless to make his love known. If we turn away from the light that Jesus wants to shine in the world, the light cannot reach us. Not because it would not be effective enough, but because by building obstacles we prevent it from coming to us.
This gives man a certain responsibility, which he can freely accept or refuse. He can make choices, for better or worse.
FIRST READING Acts 5, 17-26
The men whom you put in the dungeon are in the temple teaching the people.
From the Acts of the Apostles
In those days the high priest and all his entourage,
who formed the Sadducee party
were filled with intense envy.
They seized the apostles and put them in the city jail.
But in the night
An angel of the Lord unlocked the doors of the prison,
led them out and said :
“Go ,
Go back into the temple
and preach to the people all these words of life.”
They obeyed,
went to the temple in the morning
and taught there.
Now when the high priest came with his people,
they called together the Sanhedrin,
the council of the elders of the people of Israel
and sent servants to the prison to get them.
But on arrival the servants found them no longer in the dungeon.
They returned with the message :
“We found the prison firmly locked
and the guards at the doors at their posts,
but when we opened it we found no one there.”
When they heard this
the temple commander and the high priests were
– worried about this –
wondered what the consequences might be.
But someone came and reported to them :
“The men whom you have put in the dungeon ,
are in the temple teaching the people.”
Then the commander and his servants went to get them
– but without using force-
for fear of being stoned by the people.

Those crying out in distress, to them the Lord listens.

but he who does not believe has already been judged,
because he has not believed
in the Name of the only begotten Son of God.
“In this, the judgment consist:

but men loved the darkness more than the light,
because their deeds were evil.

On the care of the common home
34. It probably bothers us to become aware of the extinction of a mammal or a bird because of their greater visibility. But the proper functioning of ecosystems also requires mushrooms, algae, worms, small insects, reptiles and the innumerable variety of micro-organisms. A few species that are not very numerous, but which usually go unnoticed, play a fundamental critical role in stabilising the balance of a place. Although the human being must intervene when a geosystem enters a critical phase, today the level of human intervention in a reality as complex as nature is such that the disasters constantly caused by the human being necessitate a new intervention, so that human activity becomes omnipresent with all the risks that this entails. This creates a vicious circle where the intervention of the human being to solve a problem often ends up making the situation worse. For example, many birds and insects that become extinct because of the toxic pesticides created by technology are useful for agriculture itself, and their disappearance will have to be compensated by yet another technological intervention, which will probably have new harmful effects. The efforts of scholars and technicians trying to solve the problems caused by human beings are commendable and sometimes admirable. But when we look at the world, we notice that this level of human intervention, often in the service of money and consumerism, in reality makes the earth on which we live less rich and beautiful, more and more limited and grey, while at the same time the development of technology and the supply for consumption continue to increase without limit. Thus, it seems that we are deluding ourselves into thinking that we can replace an irreplaceable and irretrievable beauty with another one created by us.
