Uitnodiging

Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?

Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Elke morgen vanaf 7 uur ter beschikking

 

Overweging

De vrienden van Job argumenteren dat zo’n beproeving onmogelijk een onschuldig man kan treffen. Job pleit onschuldig maar dit brengt hem in een onmogelijke positie tegenover God. ‘Al sta ik in mijn recht, ik heb geen verweer’. Is Gods recht het recht van de sterkste? In elk geval is zijn macht in de natuur overweldigend. Wie kan tegen Hem iets beginnen? Hij luistert niet. Deze gedurfde wijze van spreken toont voldoende aan hoe diep het boek Job met deze problematiek worstelt.

EERSTE LEZING         Job 9, 1-12.14-16

Tegenover God staat niemand in zijn recht, geen mens.

Uit het Boek Job

Zo luidde het antwoord van Job aan zijn vrienden :
“Ja, ik weet het, je hebt gelijk ;
tegenover God staat niemand in zijn recht, geen mens.
“Treed je met Hem in het geding,
duizend tegen één dat je geen verweer hebt.
“Zo wijs is Hij en zo sterk
dat niemand Hem ongestraft kan blijven weerstaan.
“Bergen rukt Hij van hun plaats en ze weten het niet ;
in zijn toorn stoot Hij ze omver.
“Hij schudt de aarde : ze trilt,
ze wankelt op haar zuilen.
“Hij beveelt de zon en ze komt niet meer op,
Hij dekt de sterren af en ze schijnen niet meer.
“Hij, en Hij alleen spant het hemelgewelf,
legt de geweldige zee aan zijn voeten.
“Hij schiep de Grote Beer en Orion,
de Plejaden en de sterren van het zuiden.
“Grote, ondoorgrondelijke dingen brengt Hij tot stand,
wonderen ontelbaar.
“Hij gaat voorbij, en ik zie Hem niet,
glipt langs mij heen, en ik merk het niet eens.
“Wanneer Hij toeslaat, wie zal het beletten ?
“Wie zal zeggen : wat doet Gij daar ?
“Hoe kan ik tegen Hem in het krijt treden,
naar voren brengen wat ik wil ?
“Al sta ik in mijn recht, ik heb geen verweer ;
ik kan mijn rechter slechts smeken om genade.
“Maar Hij luistert niet eens naar mijn roepen,
al weet ik zeker dat Hij me hoort.”

TUSSENZANG    Ps. 88(87), 1abc-11, 12-13, 14-15

Laat mijn bede doordringen tot U, Heer.

Elke dag, Heer, roep ik om erbarmen,
strek mijn handen smekend naar U uit.
Doet Gij wonderen voor wie gestorven zijn ?
Staan er doden op om U te loven ?

Wordt uw goedheid in het graf geprezen ?
Wordt uw trouw ook in het dodenrijk erkend ?
Ziet men in het land der duisternis uw werken ?
Aan de oevers der vergetelheid uw gunst ?

Toch zal ik U blijven roepen, Heer,
elke morgen kom ik met mijn bede.
Waarom, Heer, verstoot gij mij steeds weer,
blijft Gij uw gelaat voor mij verbergen ?

Alleluia.
Het werk van de Heer is goed en betrouwbaar,
al wat Hij besluit, staat onwrikbaar vast.

EVANGELIE         Lc. 9, 57-62

Ik zal U volgen, waar Gij ook heen gaat.

Uit het heilig evangelie van onze Heer Jezus Christus volgens
Lucas

In die tijd zei iemand tot Jezus :
“Ik zal U volgen, waar Gij ook heen gaat.”
Jezus sprak tot hem :
“De vossen hebben holen en de vogels hun nesten,
maar de Mensenzoon
heeft niets waar Hij zijn hoofd op kan laten rusten.”
Tot een ander sprak Hij :
“Volg Mij.”
Deze vroeg :
“Heer,
laat mij eerst teruggaan om mijn vader te begraven.”
Jezus zei tot hem :
“Laat de doden hun doden begraven ;
maar gij,
ga heen en verkondig het Rijk Gods.”
Weer een ander zei :
“Ik zal U volgen Heer,
maar laat mij eerst afscheid nemen van mijn huisgenoten.”
Tot hem sprak Jezus :
“Wie de hand aan de ploeg slaat
maar omziet naar wat achter hem ligt,
is ongeschikt voor het Rijk Gods.”

188. Er zijn discussies over kwesties betreffende het milieu waarbij het moeilijk is tot een consensus te komen. Ik beklemtoon nogmaals dat de Kerk niet pretendeert wetenschappelijke definities te bepalen, noch de plaats in te nemen van de politiek, maar ik nodig uit tot een eerlijk en transparant debat, opdat bijzondere noden en ideologieën het algemeen welzijn niet schaden.

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Consideration
Job’s friends argue that such a trial cannot possibly affect an innocent man. Job pleads innocent but this puts him in an impossible position before God. ‘Though I am in my right, I have no defence’. Is God’s law the law of the strongest? In any case, His power in nature is overwhelming. Who can do anything against Him? He does not listen. This bold way of speaking sufficiently shows how deeply the book of Job wrestles with this issue.

 

FIRST READING         Job 9, 1-12.14-16

Against God no one is in his right, no man.

From the Book of Job

Thus Job’s reply to his friends :
“Yes, I know, you are right ;
against God no one is in his right, no man.
“Do you enter into dispute with Him ,
a thousand to one that you have no defence.
“So wise is He and so strong
that no one can resist Him with impunity.
“Mountains He snatches from their place and they do not know it ;
in His wrath He knocks them down.
“He shakes the earth : It trembles,
it totters on its pillars.
“He commands the sun and it rises no more,
He covers the stars and they shine no more.
“He, and He alone strains the heavenly vault,
lays the great sea at his feet.
“He created the Great Bear and Orion,
the Pleiades and the stars of the south.
“Great, unfathomable things He brings about,
wonders countless.
“He passes by, and I do not see Him,
slips past me, and I don’t even notice.
“When He strikes, who will prevent it?
“Who shall say : what art Thou doing there?
“How can I go against Him,
bring forward what I want?

Let my prayer penetrate to You, Lord.

Every day, Lord, I cry out for mercy,
stretch out my hands supplicatingly to Thee.
Do You do miracles for those who have died ?

Ist thy goodness praised in the grave ?
Is thy faithfulness recognised even in the kingdom of the dead ?
In the land of darkness, do they see thy works ?
On the shores of oblivion your favour ?

Yet I will continue to cry out to you, Lord,
every morning I come with my supplication.
Why, Lord, wilt Thou cast me away again and again,
dost Thou continue to hide thy face from me ?

In those days someone said to Jesus :
“I will follow Thee wherever Thou goest.”
Jesus spoke to him :
“The foxes have dens and the birds their nests ,
but the Son of Man
has nothing on which He can rest his head.”
To another He spoke :
“Follow Me.”
This one asked :
“Lord ,
first let me go back to bury my father.”
Jesus said to him :
“Let the dead bury their dead ;
but thou ,
go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
Yet another said :
“I will follow Thee Lord ,
but first let me say goodbye to my companions.”
To him Jesus spoke :
“Whoever puts his hand to the plough
but looks back to what lies behind him ,
is unfit for the Kingdom of God.”

I stress again that the Church does not claim to set scientific definitions, nor to take the place of politics, but I invite honest and transparent debate, so that particular needs and ideologies do not harm the common good.
