Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Veel mensen beschouwen engelen als religieuze sprookjesfiguren: goede feeën die redding brengen als alles vast zit, speelse elfjes die de dagelijkse sleur wat opvrolijken. Zo plaatsen zij de engelen in de schemer van de legende. Toch zijn engelen, als beschermende figuren, een vast bijbels gegeven. Aan hen voorbijgaan is een teken van inconsequent geloof. Wij geloven Jezus graag wanneer Hij zegt:’ Benadeel niemand, wees rechtvaardig, bemin je naaste’. Het maakt immers onze volwassen wereld leefbaar. Maar ongelovig halen we de schouders op bij de woorden: ‘Om echt te geloven moet je worden als kinderen wiens engelen voor de troon van de Vader staan’. (Uit het Missaal voor weekdagen en heiligenvieringen)
EERSTE LEZING Dan. 7, 9-10.13-14
Duizendmaal duizenden dienden Hem.
Uit de Profeet Daniël
In mijn visioen zag ik dat er tronen werden geplaatst
en dat een hoogbejaarde zich neerzette.
Zijn gewaad was wit als sneeuw
en zijn hoofdhaar blank als wol.
Zijn troon bestond uit vlammen,
de wielen ervan uit laaiend vuur.
Een stroom van vuur welde op
en vloeide voor Hem uit.
Duizendmaal duizenden dienden Hem
en tienduizendmaal tienduizenden stonden voor Hem.
Het gerechtshof zette zich neer
en de boeken werden geopend.
In mijn nachtelijk visioen zag ik met de wolken des hemels
iemand aankomen die op een mens geleek.
Hij ging naar de hoogbejaarde en werd voor Hem geleid.
Toen werd Hem heerschappij gegeven,
luister en koninklijke macht ;
alle volken, stammen en talen brachten Hem hun hulde.
Zijn heerschappij is een eeuwige heerschappij
die nooit vergaat,
zijn koninkrijk gaat nooit te gronde.

Ik zing voor U, Heer, en alle hemelmachten.
U wil ik prijzen, Heer, uit heel mijn hart,
omdat Gij naar mijn bidden hebt geluisterd.

en werp mij neer, gebogen naar uw heiligdom.
U prijs ik om uw goedheid en uw trouw,

In die tijd zag Jezus Natanaël naar zich toekomen
en zei, doelend op hem :
“Dat is waarlijk een Israëliet in wie geen bedrog is !”
Natanaël zei tot Hem :
“Hoe kent Gij mij?”
Jezus gaf hem ten antwoord :
“Voordat Fipippus u riep
zag Ik u onder de vijgeboom zitten.”
Toen zei Natanaël tot Hem :
“Rabbi,
Gij zijt de Zoon Gods,
Gij zijt de Koning van Israël.”
Jezus antwoordde :
“Omdat Ik u zei dat Ik u onder de vijgeboom zag gelooft ge?
“Gij zult grotere dingen zien dan deze.”
En Hij voegde er aan toe :
“Voorwaar, voorwaar, ik zeg u :
gij zult de hemel open zien
en de engelen Gods zien opstijgen en neerdalen
in dienst van de Mensenzoon.”

Consideration
Many people regard angels as religious fairy-tale figures: good fairies who bring salvation when everything is stuck, playful elves who brighten up the daily routine. Thus they place the angels in the twilight of legend. Yet angels, as protective figures, are a fixed biblical fact. To ignore them is a sign of inconsistent faith. We gladly believe Jesus when he says: ‘Do not harm anyone, be just, love your neighbour’. After all, it makes our adult world liveable. But unbelievingly we shrug our shoulders at the words: ‘To really believe you must become like children whose angels stand before the throne of the Father’. (From the Missal for Weekdays and Saints’ Celebrations)

In my vision I saw thrones being set up
and a very aged man was prostrate.
His robe was white as snow

The court sat down

In my nightly vision
I saw in the clouds of heaven someone coming who looked like a man.

60. Finally, we need to acknowledge that different approaches and lines of thought have emerged regarding this situation and its possible solutions. At one extreme, we find those who doggedly uphold the myth of progress and tell us that ecological problems will solve themselves simply with the application of new technology and without any need for ethical considerations or deep change. At the other extreme are those who view men and women and all their interventions as no more than a threat, jeopardizing the global ecosystem, and consequently the presence of human beings on the planet should be reduced and all forms of intervention prohibited. Viable future scenarios will have to be generated between these extremes, since there is no one path to a solution. This makes a variety of proposals possible, all capable of entering into dialogue with a view to developing comprehensive solutions.
