Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Reeds gisteren klonk een groot thema uit de Efeziërsbrief: Gods geheime raadsbesluit om ‘allen’ in Christus te verlossen, een bevrijding die nu verwezenlijkt wordt in de volheid der tijden. Vandaag wordt duidelijk wie ‘allen’ zijn. Vooreerst ‘wij’, dat zijn de joden die reeds tevoren uitkeken naar de Christus. Maar ook ‘gij’, de heidenen, die nu het woord van het evangelie ontvangt.
EERSTE LEZING Ef. 1, 11-14
Wij hadden reeds tevoren onze hoop op de Christus gebouwd,
en ook gij zijt vergezeld met de heilige Geest.
Uit de brief van de heilige apostel Paulus aan de christenen van
Efeze
Broeders en zusters,
In Christus hebben wij ons erfdeel ontvangen,
daartoe voorbestemd door de beschikking van Hem
die alles tot stand brengt naar het besluit van zijn wil,

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijke huis
204. De huidige toestand van de wereld “brengt een gevoel van onbestendigheid en onzekerheid voort, dat op zijn beurt vormen van collectief egoïsme begunstigt”. Wanneer de mensen egocentrisch worden en zich in hun geweten isoleren, vergroten zij hun eigen hebzucht. Hoe leger het hart van een persoon is, des te meer behoefte heeft hij aan het kopen, bezitten en consumeren van objecten. In die context lijkt het onmogelijk dat iemand het accepteert dat de werkelijkheid hem een grens stelt. Tegen deze horizon bestaat er evenmin een waar algemeen welzijn. Als dit het type mensen is dat in een maatschappij ertoe neigt te overheersen, dan zullen normen alleen maar worden gerespecteerd in de mate waarin zij niet ingaan tegen de eigen behoeften. Daarom denken wij niet alleen aan de mogelijkheid van verschrikkelijke klimatologische verschijnselen of grote natuurrampen, maar ook aan catastrofes die voortvloeien uit maatschappelijke crises, omdat de obsessie voor een consumptistische levensstijl, vooral wanneer dit alleen maar voor weinigen is weggelegd, slechts geweld en onderlinge vernietiging zal veroorzaken.

Consideration
Already yesterday a great theme sounded from the Ephesians letter: God’s secret counsel to redeem “all” in Christ, a deliverance that is now being realized in the fullness of time. Today it becomes clear who “all” are. First of all ‘we’, that is the Jews who were already looking forward to the Christ. But also “you,” the Gentiles, who now receive the word of the gospel.

We had already before built our hope on the Christ,

Brothers and sisters,
In Christ we have received our inheritance,

On the care of the common home
204. The present state of the world “produces a sense of volatility and insecurity, which in turn favors forms of collective selfishness.” When people become self-centered and isolated in their conscience, they increase their own greed. The emptier a person’s heart is, the more need he has to buy, possess and consume objects. In this context, it seems impossible for a person to accept that reality imposes a limit on him. Against this horizon, there is no true common good either. If this is the type of people who tend to prevail in a society, norms will only be respected to the extent that they do not go against one’s own needs. This is why we think not only of the possibility of terrible climatic phenomena or major natural disasters, but also of catastrophes resulting from social crises, because the obsession with a consumerist lifestyle, especially when it is reserved only for the few, will only cause violence and mutual destruction.
