Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
In de Efeziërsbrief lezen we op een zeer hoog theologisch niveau. Niet alleen Christus, maar ook de Kerk, die het lichaam vormt waarvan Hij het hoofd is, worden beschreven in indrukwekkend kosmologische termen. De geloofsgemeenschap (ecclesia) is hier niet langer de beperkte vergadering van de christenen, zoals in de vroege brieven beschreven wordt, maar de hele groep van gelovigen: De Kerk, in wie de volheid van de Christus nu reeds vervult ‘alles in allen’.
EERSTE LEZING Ef. 1, 15-23
God heeft Christus als Hoofd gegeven
aan de kerk die zijn lichaam is.
Uit de brief van de heilige apostel Paulus aan de christenen van Efeze
Broeders en zusters,
Ik heb gehoord van uw geloof in de Heer Jezus
en van uw liefde voor alle heiligen.
Daarom zeg ook ik onophoudelijk dank.
Steeds gedenk ik u in mijn gebeden.
Ik smeek de God van onze Heer Jezus Christus,
de Vader der heerlijkheid,
u de Geest te geven van wijsheid en openbaring
om Hem waarachtig te kennen.
Moge Hij uw innerlijk oog verlichten
om te zien,
hoe groot de hoop is waartoe Hij u roept,
hoe rijk de heerlijkheid van zijn erfdeel te midden der heiligen
en hoe overgroot zijn macht in ons die geloven.
Dezelfde sterkte en kracht heeft Hij betoond in Christus,
toen Hij Hem opwekte uit de dood
en Hem aan zijn rechterhand zette in de hemelen,
hoog boven alle heerschappijen,
machten, krachten en hoogheden
en boven elke naam die genoemd wordt,
niet alleen in deze maar ook in de toekomstige tijd.
Alles heeft God onder zijn voeten gelegd,
en Hemzelf, verheven boven alles,
heeft Hij als Hoofd gegeven aan de kerk
die zijn lichaam is,
de volheid van Hem, die het al in alles vervult.

Heel uw schepping hebt Gij aan hem onderworpen.
Heer, onze Heer,
hoe ontzagwekkend is uw Naam op aarde,
hoger dan de hemel reikt uw majesteit.
Kinderen en zuigelingen laat Ge voor U spreken.
Als ik naar de hemel kijk,
het kunstwerk van uw vingers,
als ik maan en sterren zie, die Gij daar hebt gezet.
Ach, wat is de mens dan, dat Gij naar hem omziet,
‘t mensenkind, dat Gij zo voor hem zorgt ?

hebt Gij hem geschapen,

“Ik zeg u;
ieder die Mij bij de mensen belijdt,
hem zal de Mensenzoon als de Zijne erkennen bij Gods engelen.
Maar wie Mij tegenover de mensen verloochend heeft
zal verloochend worden tegenover Gods engelen.
Aan ieder die zich zal kanten tegen de Mensenzoon
zal het vergeven worden;
maar hem die de heilige Geest heeft gelasterd
zal het niet vergeven worden.
Wanneer men u brengt voor synagogen,
overheden en machthebbers,
maakt u dan niet bezorgd
over het hoe of wat van uw antwoord ter verdediging:
op dat ogenblik zal de heilige Geest u leren wat gij moet zeggen.”

En toch is alles niet verloren, omdat de mens, die in staat is zich tot het uiterste te verlagen, zichzelf ook kan overtreffen, opnieuw voor het goede kan kiezen en kan verbeteren ondanks welke psychologische en maatschappelijke conditionering dan ook die het wordt opgelegd. Het is in staat eerlijk naar zichzelf te kijken, om de eigen afkeer bloot te leggen en nieuwe wegen naar de ware vrijheid in te slaan. Er bestaan geen systemen die een open staan voor het goede, de waarheid en de schoonheid, noch het vermogen om te reageren op wat God in het diepst van ons hart blijft aanmoedigen, volledig doen. Aan iedereen van deze wereld vraag ik deze eigen waardigheid, die niemand gerechtigd is hem af te nemen, niet te vergeten.

Consideration
In the Ephesians letter, we read at a very high theological level. Not only Christ, but also the Church, which forms the body of which He is the head, are described in impressively cosmological terms. The community of faith (ekklesia) here is no longer the limited assembly of Christians, as described in the early epistles, but the whole group of believers: the Church, in whom the fullness of the Christ is already fulfilling ‘all in all’.
FIRST READING Eph. 1:15-23
God has given Christ as Head
to the church which is his body.
From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of Ephesus
Brothers and sisters,
I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus
and of your love for all the saints.
Therefore I too give thanks unceasingly.
Always I remember you in my prayers.
I implore the God of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Father of glory,
to give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation
to know Him truly.
May He enlighten your inner eye
to see,
how great is the hope to which He calls you,
how rich is the glory of his inheritance in the midst of the saints
and how great his power in us who believe.

And yet all is not lost, because man, capable of lowering himself to the limit, is also able to surpass himself, to choose the good once again and to improve despite whatever psychological and social conditioning is imposed on it. It is able to take an honest look at itself, to expose its own aversions and open up new paths to true freedom. There are no systems in existence that fully do an openness to goodness, truth and beauty, nor the ability to respond to what God continues to encourage in the depths of our hearts. To everyone of this world, I ask not to forget this own dignity that no one is entitled to take away from him.
