Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
De lezing valt uiteen in twee delen: Gij waart dood…nu zijt ge levend, ten leven gewekt, gered. Opvallend is hier de onmiskenbare gelijkenis met de Romeinenbrief. Hoe zijt ge ten leven gewekt? Niet door uw eigen prestaties. Alleen aan de genade van God, alleen aan het geloof in zijn erbarmen, dankt gij uw redding. Niet aan uzelf. Het is Gods gave.
EERSTE LEZING Ef. 2, 1-10
God heeft ons samen met Christus Jezus doen opstaan en zetelen in de hemelen.
Uit de brief van de heilige apostel Paulus aan de christenen van Efeze
Broeders en zusters,
Gij waart dood door uw afdwalingen en uw zonden
waarin gij eertijds hebt geleefd volgens de god van deze wereld,
de heerser over het machtsgebied van de lucht,
de geest die nog altijd aan het werk is onder de weerspannigen.
Trouwens ook wij allen, zonder uitzondering
hebben vroeger tot hen behoord,
toen wij ons leven lieten beheersen door zondige begeerten
en deden
wat onze zelfzucht en onze boze neigingen van ons wilden.
Uit onszelf waren wij een voorwerp van Gods toorn,
evenzeer als de anderen.
Maar God die rijk is aan erbarming,
heeft wegens de grote liefde waarmee Hij ons heeft liefgehad,
ons met Christus ten leven gewekt
hoewel wij dood waren door onze zonden ;
aan zijn genade dankt gij uw redding.
Hij heeft ons samen met Hem doen opstaan
en zetelen in de hemelen, in Christus Jezus,
om de naderbij komende Eeuwen
de overgrote rijkdom van zijn genade te tonen
door zijn goedheid jegens ons in Christus Jezus.
Ja, aan die genade dankt gij uw heil, door het geloof ;
niet aan uzelf : Gods gave is het ;
niet aan uw prestaties, niemand mag zich verhovaardigen.
Gods werk zijn wij,
geschapen in Christus Jezus
om in ons leven de goede daden te realiseren
die God voor ons al bereid heeft.
TUSSENZANG Ps. 100(99), 2, 3, 4, 5
Wij zijn de kudde van de Heer, zijn volk.
Juicht voor de Heer, alle landen,
dient met blijdschap de Heer.
Treedt onbezorgd voor zijn Aanschijn ;
waarlijk, de Heer is God.
Hij is de Schepper en Meester,
wij zijn kudde, zijn volk.
Trekt met een lied door zijn poorten,
komt in zijn voorhof met zang.
Zegent zijn Naam en eert Hem,

In die tijd zei iemand uit het volk tegen Jezus :
“Meester, zeg aan mijn broer dat hij de erfenis met mij deelt.”
Maar Jezus antwoordde hem :
“Man, wie heeft Mij over u tot rechter of verdeler aangesteld ?”
En Hij sprak tot hem :
“Pas op en wacht u voor alle hebzucht !
“Want geen enkel bezit, – al is dit nog zo overvloedig –
kan uw leven veilig stellen.”
Hij vertelde hun de volgende gelijkenis :
“Het land van een rijk man had een grote oogst opgeleverd.
“Daarom overlegde deze bij zichzelf :
Wat moet ik doen ?
“Ik heb geen ruimte om mijn oogst te bergen.
“En hij zei :
Dit ga ik doen :
ik breek mijn schuren af en bouw grotere :
Daarin zal ik dan heel mijn rijkdom aan koren bergen.
“Dan zal ik tot mijzelf zeggen :
Man, je hebt een grote rijkdom liggen, voor lange jaren ;
rust nu uit,
eet en drink en geniet ervan !
“Maar God sprak tot hem :
Dwaas !
“Nog deze nacht komt men je leven van je opeisen ;
en al die voorzieningen die je getroffen hebt,
voor wie zijn die dan ?
“Zo gaat het met iemand die schatten vergaart voor zichzelf,
maar niet rijk is bij God.”

Het Handvest van de Aarde riep ons allen op een fase van zelfvernietiging achter ons te laten en opnieuw te beginnen, maar wij hebben nog niet een universeel bewustzijn ontwikkeld dat dit mogelijk maakt. Daarom durf ik deze uitdaging opnieuw naar voren te brengen: “Nog nooit eerder in de geschiedenis heeft ons gemeenschappelijke lot ons zo duidelijk en nadrukkelijk opgeroepen om een nieuw begin te zoeken (…). Laat onze tijd de geschiedenis ingaan als een tijdperk van de omslag naar een nieuwe eerbied voor het leven, de vastbeslotenheid om duurzame ontwikkeling te realiseren, een intensivering van de strijd voor rechtvaardigheid en vrede en de vreugdevolle viering van het leven”.

This invitation wishes to share with you the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Consideration
The reading falls into two parts: Ye were dead…now ye are alive, raised to life, saved. Here the unmistakable similarity to the letter to the Romans is striking. How were you raised to life? Not by your own achievements. Only by the grace of God, only by faith in his mercy, do you owe your salvation. Not to yourself. It is God’s gift.
FIRST READING Eph. 2, 1-10
God has raised us up together with Christ Jesus and seated us in the heavens.
From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of Ephesus
Brothers and sisters,
Ye were dead because of your errors and your sins
in which ye formerly lived according to the god of this world,
the ruler of the power of the air,
the spirit that is still at work among the unruly.
Besides, all of us, without exception
used to belong to them,
when we let sinful lusts rule our lives
and did
what our selfishness and our evil inclinations wanted from us.
Out of ourselves, we were an object of God’s wrath,
as much as others.
But God, who is rich in mercy,
because of the great love with which He loved us,
raised us to life with Christ
though we were dead because of our sins ;
to his grace you owe your salvation.
He raised us up together with Him
and seat us in the heavens, in Christ Jesus,
to make the approaching eternities
the exceeding riches of his grace
through his goodness towards us in Christ Jesus.
Yes, to that grace you owe your salvation, by faith ;
not to yourselves : It is God’s gift ;
not to your achievements, no one should pride himself,
God’s work is it,
created in Christ Jesus
to realise in our lives the good deeds
which God has already prepared for us.

“Man, who has appointed Me judge or divider over you?”
And He spoke to him :
“Beware and guard against all greed !
“For no possession, – though so abundant –
can secure your life.”
He told them the following parable :
“The land of a rich man had yielded a great harvest.
“Therefore this one deliberated to himself :
What should I do?
“I have no room to store my harvest.
“And he said :
This is what I am going to do :
I will tear down my barns and build larger ones :
In which I will then store all my wealth of corn.
“Then I will say to myself :
Man, you have a great wealth lying, for long years ;
rest now,
eat and drink and enjoy it !

207. The Earth Charter called on us all to leave behind a phase of self-destruction and start anew, but we have not yet developed a universal consciousness that makes this possible. That is why I dare to raise this challenge again: “Never before in history has our common destiny called us so clearly and emphatically to seek a new beginning (…). Let our time go down in history as an era of turning towards a new reverence for life, the determination to achieve sustainable development, an intensification of the struggle for justice and peace and the joyful celebration of life.”
